The worst part is Serie A gets all the La liga, EPL, German league rejects or younger players who will eventually go to those leagues. You would think that with all these foreign who are suppose to be "better" then Italians that these clubs would win European trophies, but not one has. Look at Roma last week they lost to Lyon who fielded 7-8 French players and Roma had what 1 Italian starter?. We need to go back to the 90's, this influx of foreign players has made the league worse.
I retain the Serie A is still better and stronger than the famed EPL which I've always thought was overrated. Maybe Serie A clubs haven't been able to play in Europe because of the schedules ,timing , cycles or right combination of players but Its no wonder why EPL clubs point to Italian coaches or why few English players played in Italy and that isn't a coincidence. In 2012 Roberto Mancini won it, 2016 Ranieri and most likely this year it will be Conte. As far as Leicester City and Claudio Ranieri are concerned, I can assure you a team like that will have never won the Serie A. Not now or in the next 10-15 years.
I looked it up — Lyon actually started 9 French players: http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleagu...ound=2000794/match=2019685/lineups/index.html Pretty impressive in this day and age.
Found this piece from April stating that last season foreigners made up 58% of of the Serie A, which was second only to the Premier League when it comes to the percentage of foreign players: In Italia sempre più giocatori stranieri: Serie A seconda solo alla Premier Will be interesting to see how the numbers look for this new season.
Look how the Chinese Super League operates. https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...educes-number-foreign-players-allowed-to-play A maximum of 3 foreign players per team on the field at once and a minimum of 2 Chinese U23 players in the starting 11 per team.
It would be interesting to see the trend over time and the effect that the new regs are having on this.
Right now I'm watching Napoli v Nice in the CL playoffs. Napoli have started one Italian player: Insigne. Meanwhile 9 of the 11 starters for Nice are French.
Per wiki, Jorginho's family have origins in Lusiana, Veneto. He was a youth player of Verona since he was 16.
Ah, forgot about that. According to this, his connection to Italy is a great-great-grandfather from Veneto: http://gianlucadimarzio.com/it/hellas-jorginho-diventa-italiano-e-lunder-21
The thing that bothers me the most about some Serie A teams is they ignore or loan out some Italian player while sign some mediocre player from Argentina , BRAZIL etc to do more less the same thing and in some cases there stats are not any better than the Italian that was loaned out
Yes this is true. I retain that Italian born players are could be just as good if not better than many of those foreigners. Its not like all of them are great players just because they are from Brazil or Argentina. It was always the case and the only thing that holds back the growth or development many of these young Italians is the lack of playing time with and against other Serie A players. Many people never talk about it but playing against great players will also make your bones and even though the Serie B , C and D are good, tough leagues, I don't think they provide the same type of skill that the Serie A traditionally has. I also think playing abroad could stunt top players levels because the styles are just completely different. The bottom line is , you won't get good by sitting on a bench or not playing. It makes one wonder where a player like Maldini, Bergomi , Totti, Baggio, Mancini, Donadoni , Zola , Vialli, DiBiaggio, Dino Baggio , Damiano Tommasi, Demetrio Albertini , Massaro, DiLivio not to mention goalkeepers like Pagliuca , Marchegiani, Peruzzi and even Buffon would be doing if they were playing or just starting out in today's world? Judging by the amount of foreigners per team , I'm betting there would be a very good chance those players would never see the field in 2017.
One of the reasons I think Giovinco left Italy other than 6 mil per season in Toronto was just plain playing time he was barely playing at Juve and was loaned out alot
Giovinco was a special case. Honestly, I don't think he would have ever been able to start at Juve regardless of the many foreigners. Maybe at a smaller club but never any of the six sisters....Juve , Milan , Inter , Lazio , Roma or Fiorentina....
