Holy crap, the color is awful in this vidcap. But still a classic scene.

That's starting to fill in some. I wish I could get rid of the cross-diagonals, but it wouldn't make for a very intuitive box.

As newtex has said, 8-8-8. "Pretty close." I'm still laughing about it.

The West stole three points from the East this week. In other news, Philadelphia isn't having a great season. One home loss, one away tie, and one away loss in inter-conference play. The small sample of games played (24) says to me that Philly being in 1/8th of them is driving quite a bit of the action.

The East still has more goals in hand, a margin of +3. The West's away record of 1-4-6 has a PPG of 0.64, whereas the East's away record is a slightly-better 0.77.

I added that game in to your earlier post that stated how many East v. West games each conference has hosted to calculate the East v. West for the season using each conference's pace of wins, draws, and losses home and away. The West is on pace to go 38-39-45. Because the East has hosted one fewer game, the percent of East v. West points earned by the West is on pace to go down from 47.76 percent (what it is now) to 46.79 percent.

The East, as newtex said, is doing ever so slightly better than the West. No away games, Orlando should have won, and they did.

Minnesota hasn't played interconference since deciding not to suck, but Colorado is now the Spoon leader, so there's that.

The West hosted all four games and got 1.75 points per game, while the East got 1 point per game. That's better for the East than the home and away points per game for MLS last year, when home clubs averaged 1.81 points and away clubs averaged .88 points.

The Shield Standings by PPG after a little more than a quarter of the season:

The two conferences are fairly well jumbled up especially when you consider the ties. The West having three of the four teams below 1.00 is the thing that really jumps out. And Minnesota isn't one of them.

Giving 22 points for first in points per game down to 1 point for the fewest points per game gives 122 points for Western Conference clubs and 131 points for Eastern Conference clubs.

    The topline figures:

    1) This season, the East has a 4-10-10 away record; the West has a 3-6-17 record (WTL). That's 0.917 PPG for the East, versus 0.577 PPG for the West.

    2) Further exacerbating matters, of the West's pretty paltry 59 goals, only twenty-four of them (hello there, easily-irritated grammar Nazis) were scored in away games. The East has managed to score twenty-six away goals, which of their 80 goals isn't much, but it's mostly because Colorado, Houston, Minnesota, and Seattle allow each Eastern team to put at least two away on them.

    3) The GPG gap of 0.42 (a 21-goal differential) is going to be all but impossible to overcome. In 72 remaining games, the West will have to outscore the East by an extra 0.31 goals per game.

    4) The PPG gap of 0.48 (a 24-point differential) will obviously be even harder - the West will have to net an additional 0.33 PPG. In other words, they need an additional 8 wins over their current pace. In other words, 120/216, or 55.5% of the remaining points. That's hard to pull off, especially since the East has a ton of home games (and Atlanta's home schedule is wide-open), so assume the West is gonna drop some home points.

    5) On the other hand, the West does get to play Columbus four more times... :(

The percent of games played so far that were East vs. West is higher than it will be for the season. You can't say how many remaining points the West needs to catch up because you don't know how many draws there will be. The West can catch up by getting 120 points like you said compared to 96 for the East for the rest of the season or with 119 points compared to 95 or other combinations with a difference of 24. Exactly 32 percent of East vs. West games have been draws. If that percent remains as close as possible, 23 out of 72 remaining East vs. West games will be draws, which means those games would give 193 points.

That's true - I assume that teams get all of the remaining points. However, each draw for the rest of the season makes it harder for the West, as the denominator gets smaller and the numerator remains static.

For example, if we see 10 draws for the remainder of the season, then 62 win/loss games remain, meaning the West has to get 56.5% of the remaining points.

If there are 23 draws - as you point out - the West needs to win 85.5/147 points from win/loss, or 58.2% of the remaining points.

So assuming no draws is actually the rosiest scenario for the West, and the most conservative test from which we can discern if the West can catch back up.
