I'm not sure why he had a hard on for either the Atoms or Fury. They both where among the worst attended teams in old NASL. Also before the Union announced their name barely any fans where voting to revive either brand. So I'd say both brands are good as dead in this city. The ASL aren't going to win over any fans by naming teams after them.

Sorry but I don't agree about Atoms, in 1973 and 1974 they averaged about 11000 people per match, which was not bad at all for the times, and if they did not mean anything explain me then why in 2013 the players of '73 have been called to Union Stadium for the 40th annversary of Dallas' final

Fury did not average much because they were a shitty team not because of their brand

I agree with you about ASL, that league is a joke and I hope they will soon close shop

Paying tribute to former teams in the area just like the Steel. You can disagree all you want, but I'm telling you people in this area don't relate to those teams. That's why the Atoms and Fury names no longer have any weight. Hell, the final four names voted for the Union where A.C. Philadelphia, Philadelphia City, S.C. Philadelphia, & Philadelphia Union. But, I suppose someone from Italy is more in the know then someone from the Philly area, lol.

Ok I get what you mean and ok if people like those names good for them, but to me they are hideous, the Union was the one who is at least decent but how can people like these cheap imitations of european names? Paying tribute means respecting the roots and all, so they still have their weight even if people don't relate to them because they didn't last long

You want to "pay tribute," build a ********ing statue.

Definitely nice for a change. Hopefully Wilt's meetings with leaders in Escondido and Oceanside go well. They were supposed to meet with Escondido at the very least last week to discuss sites, possibly near the Escondido Transit Center (which would put the stadium right off the 15 and 78 as well as the Sprinter). As well as a meeting with Oceanside. I've not seen any articles on how either of those meetings went.

thumbleweeds... no news in a while, anyone hear rumors or do you simply expect no news until the end of the year at least when SD votes and MLS decides, even if NASL usually doesn't care what MLS does?

Yep that's my understanding as well. OC and SD are close to being announced.

Can't tell if that's a promotion of demotion for San Diego Zest from their current place in USL PDL.

since this is announced as a pro team, you could logically have the amateur team still playing in the PDL and the pro team join Yan...

The UPSL considers a team pro if they pay a player $50 to play one game for them.

Thats not how I see Pro vs Amateur.

Everything we were told this was a done deal, they were just wanting to space out the announcements. I feel like this has been spaced out long enough, so why not announcement?

Because MLS investors aren't done yet. Declaring SD as free and clear very risky for NASL or USL.

How so? The NASL team was never going to really be in direct competition with the NASL team being up in Escondido or Oceanside. Their announcement shouldn't be predicated on what MLS is going to or not going to do in that regard.

And if they're going to announce for maximum effect with the super region beyond the North County, this would be the prime opportunity to take as MLS in SD is all but dead at this point through at least the next 4 slots. Maybe we'll have another shot at 29 or 30. The NASL team in the interim is positioned to pick up at least a few fans from areas outside North County now that wouldn't otherwise have been engaged with them... provided they don't dally and give those fans time to glom onto something else to fill the void MLS in SD just left.

Well then, I say go for it. If starting a team where 2 MLS clubs and an existing USL team exist doesn't deter them then 1 potential MLS club won't bother their business plan.

I don't think MLS in SD is as dead as you think.

Well your first part is a big part of why I think they just need to up and announce already. It's a potential MLS club 30+ miles away from where they've proposed putting the NASL team. They're not going to be direct competitors anyway. But even if they were... so what? Hasn't stopped NASL from putting teams in far worse situations in the last 12 months to fill out their skeleton of a league. I mean OC and SF were both far more precarious places to have dropped teams given the situations in those markets.
