It just proves what most of us have suspected all along: most players are only signed to one year contracts.
That sounds about right , Most players who sign a 3 year deal or longer with a team more then likely agreed to option years.
Thanks for posting the free-agent list! I posted a link to this list on the Facebook page of the St. Louis Ambush. Our owners say they are prioritizing 'roster acquisitions' right now. Well, May 1 is when the starting gun is fired on the free agent period. The top need identified by the fans in focus groups with owners (3 live focus groups were held) and online surveys with fans was to sign experienced veteran players. As long as the owners are willing to pay enough and help provide coaching gigs and/or other employment (jobs with sponsor companies, etc), I am confident that the Ambush can sign a strong core of 10-12 accomplished veteran players. Top needs are a starting quality goalkeeper and an elite scorer - many free agent options are there for both of those. Every position needs upgrades, we were worse than an expansion team last season. Our owners asked the fans openly for feedback - they received it, I just hope they put their money where their promises are.
I have heard nothing but good things about Feenstra, he is an excellent goalkeeper, certainly I would welcome him to the Ambush. Goalkeeping was well below average for the Ambush most of last season. We have no starting quality goalkeepers on our roster right now. If I were in charge, I might keep Casey Clark as a backup/developmental goalkeeper, from the current team but getting an accomplished starting goalkeeper is the top priority for us. We haven't had such a goalkeeper in 4 seasons since indoor soccer started again here in 2013.
Yes, we were well aware of the whole situation, some fans were anyway. Nonetheless, we would still love to have Marcel as our goalkeeper here or someone similar in quality.
The Turf and Boards ranked the Top 40 MASL Free Agents and is updating the article after each signing.
Feenstra's issue is the teams that want him he isn't willing to leave Milwaukee for. Relocating a wife and child to the other side of the country for low indoor wages just isn't a great option.
Well, Feenstra did fly to Florida to play for the Tropics at the end of the year, but that was a temporary gig (and probably easy to bolt on some vacation days on the beach after games). Yes, some fans were aware of the whole story with Feenstra and the Ambush before the Ambush belatedly admitted it - the new owners and coach wanted him to come to Saint Louis full time, after the previous owner planned to fly him in for games. Not Feenstra's fault, but I fault the prior Ambush owner for trading one of our best players (Andre Hayne) for a guy who couldn't even move here full-time. We could have signed another veteran goalkeeper last spring had we not wasted time with that deal. In any case, the Chicago Mustangs should see if Feenstra is willing to drive down to play in the Windy City. He would be an upgrade from Flores. That is about Feenstra's only option unless the Wave decide to bring him back (unlikely). Teams should make that a consistent policy up front - no one flown in for games, all players have to live and practice full time in the team's city. That issue should be settled in the first phone call with the player - if you can't move here, we're signing someone else.
Saint Louis is not 'halfway across the country' from Wisconsin but probably 7 or 8 hours drive from the bottom half of the state. Still way too far to commute to play soccer. It is too bad Rockford or Minneapolis don't have indoor teams anymore. Feenstra is good enough to play in MASL but unless Chicago signs him, he may not be playing much this season (unless he is suddenly able to relocate).
From the Rampage FB page "MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT! Wednesday at 1pm central we will make an announcement regarding a Major Arena Soccer League free agency signing. This signing is one of the biggest signings in franchise history. Stay tuned.." Is the Milwaukee to CR pipeline bringing Ian Bennett to Iowa? ;-)
They've been known to take our old scrap metal. Chris K was kind enough to take last year's dead weight and the Wave improved significantly. Remember everyone's hue and cry about guys like Pablo, Johnathan Greenfield and Tony Walls leaving the Wave?
The Saint Louis Ambush haven't signed anyone yet. All this talkfrom owners of 'roster acquisitions' and new directions, not much happening yet. So next question - what is going on with the Mustangs? Are they folding? I hope not. Bond is a nice pickup for Cedar Rapids.
Ian Bennett - I think he stays in Milwaukee with a new deal at the end of the free agent period. Wow, most teams would love to have him, though.
Bennett has been in Milwaukee for some time now. His family is settled there. Yeah, he's looking around, but I think you're right SteveCo, he'll eventually resign in Milwaukee. He's their franchise player, and he puts a lot of points on the boards, and butts in seats. he's one guy Milwaukee needs to try keeping if they can.
For Ian to leave the Wave someone is going to need to make him a Killer offer , I can not see him moving his family out of Milwaukee to go play someplace else. Not Unless a team is willing to fly him in for games. Cedar Rapids is not that far from Milwaukee , The Bigger question is can they even afford him? Then the next question is How Many Teams can Afford him ? Kansas City , Milwaukee, Baltimore , San Diego, Are the only ones I can think of. The Comets have had no movement during the free agency period. Ian had a Meeting with Milwaukee last Friday , Baltimore Resigned Toni Donatelli and Andrew Hoxie is Expected to resign this week I cant see Ian coming here. San Diego picked up pee wee ortega. So if someone is going to sign Ian it's going to be Milwaukee.
Maybe the teams who have not been active in the 'free agent' period are thinking several things A) our local free agent players are not likely going anywhere, we can sign them later and B) we think that we may 'over pay' players signed during the free agent period, due to perceived competition, and C) some players may just choose to not sign anywhere yet, since they think they can make more money than what they are being offered right now. Maybe the player will just wait until their original team picks up the phone, since they don't want to change teams anyway. Or no other teams are interested in the first place. Teams may think the calendar is in their favor - as the summer goes on into the early fall, players may accept lesser offers just to have a spot on a team. Other teams, including Saint Louis (unfortunately) may have excessive optimism about the quality of talent to be found in 'open tryouts'. I wouldn't be surprised if the Ambush soon announce that they 'look forward to the MASL combine and open team tryouts to find players'. Oh brother. I will probably go see more Cedar Rapids games this year to see better soccer.
