The Sounders played the first-ever sporting event at the stadium on July 28, 2002 before 25,515 fans

If memory serves we had 14,000 for out home opener last year so big improvement. Of course weather was bad then and was nice last night so helped walk up.

I see more FCC in the neighborhood with signs, posters, flags, etc. Lot of energy and a great result. Early days, but I think we can surpass our 17,000 average from last year.

    Yup.

Minnesota announced 34k for a doubleheader in 2014, but it's fair to say Seattle has the D2 mark.

Though in seattle it was also a "doubleheader" that day

Then again, I believe you are right. Those 25 K came out to see the Sounders

Well, yeah, but it was the Sounders Women, which, God bless, but the stadium was the real draw that day. The USL Sounders went there full-time in 2003 and drew 3,357 a game.

That was not Seattle's home opener that year. They played their schedule at Memorial except for that one-off and then moved for the next year.

Here are some highlights and a table of the top D2/D3 performers from Kenn's data sets since MLS started:
    - D2/D3 teams have averaged 5000 a game only 81 times in the past 20 years, but have done so 20 times in the past two years
    - Only 19 D2/D3 franchises/cities have averaged over 5000 and 5 of those are now in MLS (RGV and Phoenix seem like good bets to join the club)
    - Only 5 D2/D3 franchises/cities have averaged over 5000 for at least 5 years and 3 of those are now in MLS
(Sac and Indy appear to be on track to join the club in two years)
    - Rochester 20 year steak of 5000+ ended last year when they averaged 3655
    - Only 3 D2/D3 cities have averaged 10000 or more prior to 2014 and 3 more have done so since then

    Good stuff, thanks, Coach.

It makes sense that those organizations that have demonstrated the ability to sell tickets and be successful have been the best-equipped to move up to MLS.

Also, every promospanded club except Portland had previously won at least one championship in a lower division before joining MLS.

    Minnesota 2011
    Montreal 2009, 2004, 1994
    Vancouver 2008, 2006
    Seattle 2005, 1996, 1995
    Orlando 2013, 2011

At one point, the tipping point seemed to be around 3,500 a game in terms of medium- to long-term survival at the lower levels. (In other words, most of the clubs that had been at least able to maintain that level of attendance had been able to survive - with some exceptions - while most who could not get to that threshold were gone pretty quickly.)

It's a new landscape now. As you rightly point out, a great many of the clubs who have averaged 5k or more have done so lately.

There's somebody on Reddit who does that regularly, right?

Now that I've entered some data for this week, I couldn't tell ya. And I'd have to get my optical prescription updated to make sense of all that.

Anyway, Rochester drew an announced 1,941 today, which is very likely their lowest ever. I'd have to check to be sure.

Probably the lowest ever aside from a US Open Cup game. When the Rhinos moved into their new stadium in 2006, people were complaining about the smaller crowds compared to the 10-11,000 they drew at Frontier, but they still drew 6-7,000. What I would give now for those "smaller" crowds. With the second year of ownership I was hoping for some improvement, but this is pathetic. I don't blame the owners... the soccer and corporate community have abandoned the Rhinos.

I found it on Twitter. To make it easier, right click on the image and then select "open image in new tab". It increases the size image to fill the screen making the text far easier to read.

Richmond had a craft beer festival in the stadiums neighborhood opening day and it ended with everyone making their way into the stadium.

Not USL proper, but check this out:

Something to keep an eye on for the D3 league. No way a PDL team averages 6,000 for the entire season, but let's see where this goes.
