since DY went down Newcastle have 8 points from 6 games. Two points out of first and 10 points clear of 3rd place Huddersfield (who have a game in hand) in the 2nd automatic promotion spot with 5 to play

Interesting, my initial reaction was, that's getting a little close.

Huddersfield is going to win their game-in-hand. That means Newcastle is seven points ahead with five games left.

Not bad, but I wouldn't say it's in the bag.

With a goal difference of + 39, versus Huddersfield's +4 they're effectively 8 points ahead with 5 to play, which is a-win-plus-a-draw territory. Still, this is Newcastle so any kind of f*%k-up is possible. In that spirit, this is the run-in for The Toon and 'Udders.

    Newcastle:
    Leeds (H), Ipswich (A), Preston (H), Cardiff (A), Barnsley (H).
Only Leeds, who are in fifth place, have anything to play for, unless Blackburn magically win three more out of the remaining five games than Ipswich. The others are already thinking about next season.

    Huddersfield:
    Preston (H), Derby (A), Fulham (H), Wolves (A), Birmingham (A), Cardiff (H).
Fulham are just 2 points outside the playoffs, so they're still in the hunt but are very inconsistent. Derby are 7 points (and 5 goals) off 6th place, so they still have some hope of slipping through if other teams do them favours. Birmingham, who have sacked their manager, are not out of danger yet.

Rafa's gang have the much easier run-in, so while this isn't quite in the bag, it would be a collapse of Devon Loch proportions for them to miss out.

For those who don't know, this is footage from the 1956 Aintree Grand National, Britain's most popular horse race. It's like the Kentucky Derby, in that even people who don't care about horse racing will make a point of tuning in for that race.

Devon Loch's collapse is at the 1.22 mark.

Enjoy. If that's the right word in this case . . .

Most are really good. Some of the later ones which involve modern technology are a bit weak.

Guardian profile of Rafa and Newcastle as they enter Easter Weekend.

Rather routine, but this paragraph leapt out at me:

The top two are privately giving thanks that David Wagner’s Huddersfield team – at home to Preston on Friday and at Derby on Monday – have lost three of their past four games. “From one month ago I’ve been talking about the pressure on Huddersfield,” says Benítez, with a knowing smile. “But now everyone’s feeling the pressure. It’s important we manage it.

In the bag? No, but with that kind of form you wouldn't be putting any money on Hudersfield to catch the second automatic place. Doubt you'd put money on then winning the playoffs either.

Yedlin did not start, but was warming up in the 2nd half as possible sub. Colback just went in. Twits say it's been a great game. NUFC are up...

Yedlin on at 84 for Ritchie who gets raves fwiw. Probably not worth a pbp thread for 6 mins and stoppage, but if anyone gets mad at me for posting here. I am very very sorry. Especially on Good Friday.

I'm oddly kind of nervous as NUFC are up 1-0 and fans have been raving about what a game it's been... "Don't blow it on your return DY" is all I can think!

Apparently Yedlin whips in cross Green has to punch clear. last sub Diame for NUFC. 90

Leeds score at the last second. Yedlin had a mediocre clearance before the play, but not at fault.

and Chris Wood tied it up at end of 5 mins of stoppage. No idea how the play evolved. Tweets are saying "entire defense" switched off, fwiw.

Yedlin was at the top of the 18 and headed a clearance that only went about 15 yards beyond the 18. He then ran to press the midfielder who passed to the left wing. The winger successfully whipped in a nice cross with two defenders on him to Wood, who had absolutely no one in a Newcastle shirt within 10 yards of him.

Brighton should secure 1st. is there any chance Huddersfield might beat out Newcastle for 2nd?
