60 games will be in the US with Canada and Mexico both getting 10. Seems a bit odd, but I'll take it as a US fan.
Was pissed when I first heard we would have to cohost it, but now I'm totally fine with it. Especially given that we get all the games from the quarter finals onwards.
Doesn't make sense and I hope they don't pick a bid with three hosts. That is three automatic spots they have to give. It would make concacaf wcq interesting
I don't like the three bids, either, but, if they are going with 48 teams and 6 from CONCACAF, then Mexico and the USA have a mere formality for qualification.
Who else will host it with Europe and Asia being ineligible, and South America likely holding out for that 100 anniversary Uruguay/Argentina bid in 2030? Your other options are Africa and Oceania. The US and Mexico would have likely been competing against each other, so this was probably just bet hedging on their part. Not sure why Canada was able to tag along though
The USA and Mexico could both host on their own. Besides fifa doesn't give a damn who could actually host (Qatar) they might pick another host anyway. In terms of travel this bid is awful. Africa has a few countries that could host it by themselves. I have been very impressed with the stadium quality in the African cup of nations
They could, but they'd probably not risk it. Who in Africa has the infrastructure that can keep up with the us for a 48 team tournament? No one has bid yet either (though there's still time)
The response in Mexico is rightfully not very pleased. I mean as it stands there won't be ko games in Mexico this isn't evenly balanced in how it will be played as is normally the case when countries host together this is just a crap bid for Mexico. Canada getting an automatic bid also a turnoff. What is the upside to this as opposed to just a USA bid
First thing in my mind when I heard about this bid was the qualification process. It will be boring as hell!! If US, Canada and Mexico qualify automatically, we'd only have 4 teams strong enough to make the qualifications interesting: Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago. Maybe Jamaica as well. Also, wouldn't the Concacaf lose money for not having official matches that include US and Mexico? what about the TV channels? Sponsors? They all lose money. Incomes from friendlies are not the same. Doesn't make sense to me.
If I were Mexico, I would say, thanks, but no thanks, then wait for the next cycle to come around for the Cup. It might be 2044 or something, but it's better than getting some token games and not having a full Cup for 60-80 years.
Algeria and Morocco could host it together, I see no other options there at the moment. Other countries have the people and big cities, but absolutely no infrastructure. Unstable situation (in the region) is their biggest issue though.
I would actually love to see a Morocco World Cup, but unless they're willing to pony up a ton of bribe money, it's coming to the US
Would be fun to see the US, Mexico and Canada play a 4 games a piece home and away series instead of qualifiers.
The reason the US had to cohost is because their chance at winning it on their own was average at best. They needed Canada and Mexico to make the bid bulletproof.
Mexico pulled out of the last bidding process, so I doubt that they would have wanted this one themselves, either. So again, the way I see this, let's say that groups A and B could be hosted in Mexico, groups C and D hosted in Canada, and groups E to P in USA. (Geez, we would be all the way up to group P?) So for Mexico, they would have six first-round games, the two cross-over games between A and B (round of 32), the one R-16 between those two, and one other R-16 game. (Supposedly, from two groups hosted in Texas or Southern California.) Similar for Canada, with their one extra game being from groups hosted in northern USA. But just to say, in this scenario, I wouldn't want to be a team to go USA-MEX-USA, or USA-CAN-USA.
It is strange that the U.S. did not bid solo. I wonder if in the new 48 team world, joint bids will be all the rage.
ESPN reports "an anti-American sentiment that stems largely from actions taken by President Donald Trump's administration” is imperiling the 2026 World Cup bid, now neck-and-neck with Morocco https://t.co/1xnQHHv6t0— Daniel Victor (@bydanielvictor) February 28, 2018
