How would you guys rank the South American teams right now? I'd go like this 1. Brazil 2. Uruguay 3. Chile 4. Argentina 5. Peru 6. Ecuador 7. Paraguay 8. Venezuela 9. Colombia 10. Bolivia On current form anyways. I think there is no denying that Brazil is the best South American side at the moment. Many would agree that Uruguay is second too although that can be more debated. Chile have been underwhelming especially since I feel that Sanchez carries them at times but they take advantage of playing in Santiago and usually win there. Problems in the side but still easily the 3rd best side in South America at least for me. Argentina have been shockingly bad but with that much quality in the side all it really takes it proper lineup so I passed on current form for Argentina here. Peru in 5th was a bit bold from my side but with 3 losses in the last 10 matches, I think its a fair spot to put us. Our start will definitely cost us qualification but we've been very good in the last few matches. I'd say we're barely better than Ecuador. Ecuador have been too predictable and haven't been convincing at all for me, but they are still getting enough results to qualify. Paraguay and Venezuela are ok. Venezuela is unlucky about their bad start due to political issues but now they have nothing to play for, put that along some tough games but they do play very well. They just miss a lot of goals, which is why I say they are an OK side. Same with Paraguay. Dreadful in november but are capable of giving anyone a game. I'll get controversy for putting Colombia so low down but truth is they've been shockingly bad these qualifiers. How they are still in a qualification spot is beyond me. Same with Bolivia, impressive at home due to conditions but overall they are shocking.
They've been awful. Its not all down to the players though Pekerman has done some flat out odd experimenting, putting Borja in over Falcao, experimenting too much with Berrio, playing with 3 DM's and the defence is just awful. James is being affected by his lack of game time, similar to Ascues and Farfan for us. Maybe 9th is a bit harsh, but on current form they are 7th at best in my opinion.
Don't mind me, I was being harsh. Definitely not 9th. Although I do believe that at this current moment we are better than Colombia.
I waited for the translated bit to go up, but here is my interview with Peru RB, Aldo Corzo on the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Will have it in quotes only because the link to the site may be seen as advertising.
IMO the second worst after Bolivia is Paraguay. Their Argentina win was a fluke largely owed to Bauza's idiocy: no Messi + Demichelis/Musacchio CB pairing (one is semi-retired, the other never recovered from ACL tore) + 2 man-midfield with no marking except Masche + culo Agüero playing as enganche (?). Then Venezuela and Peru are fairly equal in my view, though I favor VEN a bit to take the win next match. And then Colombia is still better than all of them.
I respect your opinion and your prediction, but we are way better than Venezuela. Its not even a close debate.
What do we have to prove? We have a better team than them, are in better form (3 losses in the last 10, a better position in the table, and have a better head to head record than them since 2010. 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss vs them in all competitive fixtures. They do have a better forward line, but that's it. I don't know in what world we're on par with Venezuela.
That wasn't my only argument. I was being harsh but I watched Colombias last 4 matches as opposed to Peru's and I think we are better at this moment. It's my opinion. No need to get so worked up.
There's ebbs and flows just like for most teams. At this point last year Colombia was not doing that great either but then found a way to win in Bolivia and to dominate Ecuador who was at the top of the table at the time. The stretch of matches Colombia had in Qualifying late last year was pretty brutal. Having to play Paraguay- Uruguay-Chile-Argentina was difficult for a team still trying to find an identity and experimenting due to injuries and other form issues. Let's see how things shake out now playing Bolivia and Ecuador again.
