Rootin for Leicester. The tourney of 1000 teams. Down to about 200 at this juncture. Massive, you gotta love it. Also, it's an even split among continents as to when they hold their Finals. 3 in spring, 3 in fall. People have been wanting C'CAF to change, maybe OFC will as well.
Things to note: The CAF Champions League has expanded its group stage to 16 teams in four groups. CAF has also increased the prize money. The winner will receive USD 2.5M going forward. CONCACAF has also increased its prize money (from close to zero?) but at a paltry USD 500,000 for the winner that is only better than the OFC (still at zero?). The runner-up will get a smashing 300K. CONMEBOL has reformed both of its competitions and the Copa Libertadores schedule now runs from Jan-Nov. A move that made Mexico pull out of the 2017 Copa due to scheduling conflicts. This will be the first "pure" Libertadores with only South American clubs since 1998. From a CWC perspective the upside is a very short break between Libertadores final and CWC start, meaning no more form or player transfer excuses. The OFC has also tinkered once again with its format and we are now looking at home & away semifinals and final. Hopefully this will improve some of the dismal attendance we have seen. Lots of rumors about a CONCACAF format change but nothing concrete yet.
The host venues have been announced. Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain (22,700) and Zayed Sports City (43,000) in Abu Dhabi. Both cities are in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Pretty sure they initially said Zayed Sports City wasn't going to host (due to renovations for the 2019 Asian Cup) but I guess that has changed? Or did someone confuse the two major Abu Dhabi grounds - the other being the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium? As I predicted previously Al Ain got the nod and it's the first time a stadium with under 40K capacity gets to host the CWC. And that's just fine - the first three games won't draw more than that. Not to mention it's a real gem:
Gotta admit, I lost a lot of interest last year after the UCL final last May. Some clubs just rub you the wrong way, y'know.
Here ya go, start counting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_association_football_clubs There was a meme in 2014 from the pope's team's fans sayng they were in the final 2 of like 4,000, I think was the number they used. I'm pretty sure I posted it in the 2014 CWC thread.
Why limit it to first division clubs? Leicester City and River Plate were in the second division not too long ago and now they're in their respective continental championships and among those 200 remaining teams battling for the CWC 2017.

Couple big news from today: 1) Not affecting this CWC, but the CONCACAF Champions League will take on a new format in the fall...by abandoning the standard CL format entirely. It will now have a play-in tournament with runners-up from Central America and the Caribbean, leading into a springtime CCL with 16 teams playing home-and-away series until we get a winner. 2) Jeonbuk Motors got kicked out of the AFC Champions League for matchfixing.
http://www.goal.com/en-india/news/2...mpions-banned-from-defending-title-over-match says Jeonbuk is appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
So the future for the CONCACAF Champions League is.............a return to the Champions Cup. Full Press Release on CONCACAF.com I wonder what the level of interest will be for the fall tournament. CONCACAF has never successfully organized a secondary club competition (Cup Winners Cup, Giants Cup). In any case, this should guarantee Mexican participation in the 2018 Libertadores once again. I guess MLS fans will still complain that their clubs have to play in February but rumor is the league was closely involved and preferred this to a fall schedule where it interferes with the MLS playoffs. It may also make sense to wait and see if the CWC will stay in December. The 2017 action has kicked off in CONMEBOL, OFC and the AFC.
I don't think the Cup Winners Cup or Giants Cup qualified clubs for the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The fall tournament shouldn't be compared to those. The fall tournament should be compared to the Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF, which was a 16 club knockout tournament that qualified three clubs to the CONCACAF Champions Cup before it became a Champions League.
Hekari, only non AUS/NZL team to win OCL, had been disqualified from the OCL due to rows with (what looks like to be) dictatorship in PNGFA/OFC. https://www.oceaniafootball.com/hekari-united-disqualified/
Rejected. I don't get it, why couldn't the AFC act last September? Then Al Ain could have won. (Yes, I am still bitter) Well, the Giants Cup was supposed to feed into the never played CONCACAF Clubs Cup - along with the Champions Cup. The winner of the Clubs Cup was then supposed to make the Club World Cup if memory serves right. I understand what you are saying but I don't see the fall tournament as purely a qualifying gig. Just like the Europa League isn't a UCL qualifying event.
The OFC qualifying stage is over and Cook Islands' Puaikura has advanced to the group stage. With one qualifying round left in the AFC, India's Bengaluru FC (a finalist in the 2016 AFC Cup) has already crashed out to Jordan's Al Wehdat. Al Wehdat has an interesting background, they represent the Palestinian community in Jordan and are based in an Amman refugee camp.
The difference is that the winner of CONCACAF's fall tournament could win the CCL less than half a year later (I don't know the exact amount of time). The Europa League winner could win the Champions League just over a year later. I think it would have been more fair to give the fall tournament three or four spots instead of one.
I don't agree curently format due of this reason. In first phase, 16 teams fight for one spot? WTF ... is too much And there are 4 5 strong teams . Better was if all 4 semifinalist can qualify for Final tournament, looks much better as a preliminary tournament for The Last 16!! Like now, this format look like 2 different tournaments, each with one winner ! Winner of first tournament will qualify for Second tournament, and winner of second tournament will qualify for Clubs World Cup. CCL administration is close to a better format, but they don't think better ....
Fair point but CONCACAF is going through the trouble of giving the fall tournament a separate identity. They are not just calling it CCL "Qualifying Stage" or something like. I suppose you can argue this either way.
