There is no league in any sport that gets the best from every prospect. MLS is just the local whipping boy.
Diego Fagundez is a great player he is much better than Kekuta Manneh and Dom Dwyer, I would like to see him playing for the U.S. Team.
all leagues waste talent....all prospects dont become star players....but surely you dont think all leagues waste talent at the same rate. i think its fair to examine how much a league gets out of its talent or if it is developing a high enough percentage of its talent....theres a difference between every, most, some, a fraction, and a sliver, or none.....just because you think a league wastes talent (which I agree MLS does waste talent...especially from a developmental perspective)...doesnt mean you think they must develop every player they have into a star.
Dude is *still* talking about playing for the US: Diego Fagundez says he wants to play for the USMNT, says his citizenship is mere months away, and that he would like to play for a country that would be interested in him (says Uruguay no longer in contact with him).— Alicia Rodriguez (@soccermusings) January 20, 2018 FWIW I do not believe Fagundez would ever be eligible for the #USMNT since he represented Uruguay's U-20s in an official competition (2015 South American Youth C'ship). Can only file a one-time switch to a country you were already eligible for.https://t.co/J8TWWcJR1J— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) January 20, 2018
I think a lobbyist on behalf of USS could get the rule changed by FIFA to make him and others eligible, if they were really motivated. Clearly he's not the type of guy they were intending on excluding. Just make players who've been in the alternative country long enough in the formative years, and not played for another senior team, exempt. Fagundez hypothetically would be a shot in the arm to the squad. Because he plays the biggest need position, and he's actually been one of the better attackers in MLS in recent years, not just American-developed. The Soccer gods don't seem to smile on us in these situations. Better secure Jesus Ferreira and Nico Carrera. They're in the "final stages" of citizenship. Could mean a week or years.
(Please, nobody go all political on me) How can you even advance the citizenship paperwork if the Federal government is shut down?
I found this answer which probably addresses it: U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) made clear in its official statement that the shutdown “does not affect USCIS’s fee-funded activities. Our offices will remain open, and all individuals should attend interviews and appointments as scheduled.” Common forms will continue to be processed by USCIS officials (who won’t be furloughed or work unpaid like government employees in other parts of the Department of Homeland Security) Not that there aren't some aspects of the shutdown that might impact the process, but at least the major pieces continue to operate.
I apologize for commenting with a couple of tweets from *last* year. Perhaps Diego is already a citizen & just never mentioned it?
He played 5 games for the Uruguay U20s when he wasn't eligible to play for the U.S. therefore he isn't eligible for a 1 time switch without FIFA changing the rules. There really isn't a reason to discuss him on a USA national team forum, that dream died in 2015 when he played in the in the South American Youth Championship.
No!!!!!!! Why would you think that? Let’s nip this in the bud before people start blasting the Fed because they wouldn’t use The Force to get FIFA to change the rules. The Fed makes enough mistakes Without us having to create fanfic speculative stories.
