http://app.eltiempo.com/deportes/futbol/fechas-de-la-copa-libertadores/16712557 Nuevo formato de libertadores . Debería ser en la misma época de champions
The final needs to remain as 2 legs. A neutral venue wouldn't work in South America. I think this new format overall though can possibly work. It will kill the Copa Sudamericana though completely.
i think it wull happen like with the euroa league....only relevant since round of 8 .... with libertadores teams it will be more competitive imho......
Why wouldn't a neutral venue work? This is in Japan. Imagine how many fans we'd take to Rio or Sao Paulo. Winning a Final in your home stadium is amazing, but since we've done that 3 times, I'd love to take the show on the road.
I disagree with the one-leg final format. The beauty of the Libertadores is in large part the spectacle put on by the fans. I cant imagine a final with empty seats all over the place, as would happen in many ocassions with this new format. It might work in some cases, but picture -for example- a Liga de Quito-Tigres final in Sao Paulo's Morumbi. It would be a sad sight for a prestigious Libertadores final As for the Sudamericana, I think this new format could actually stregthen it, since 10 of the teams eliminated early in the Libertadores would move to it. I dont see it being weakened in any way by the new Copa, just remaining a second-rate continental competition as it was before, but with some better teams
Have you checked this (link) other change in the format of Copa Libertadores? "El invitado a la boda robandose a la novia"
It was obviously a trick by Angelici to try and get boca back in, but the president of CONMEBOL said there were no invites. Boca got in by inventing a play-off with Velez in 2015... Even the AFA had officially congratulated Velez on qualifying, yet Boca snaked in and got a one match play off in preseason and qualified. Obviously, they qualified only to throw pepper spray and tear gas at River Plate players and to be disqualified in disgrace, but no one be surprised by the corruption of Boca, basically the Juventus of Argentina
I'm glad the Copa lib is moving on to a more yearly schedule. But it's a huge disadvantage for the smaller clubs, that tend to get a nice streak going during a short period. Bigger clubs have the resources to stay competitive for a longer time and I'm sure they will be happy not to have a 6 month crunch period of nonstop competitions. Fans should be happy because the matchdays will be spread out and really be celebrated as huge events like Champions league. As opposed to now where they are cramped up messes where you only care about some games. Plus the big clubs will always be at their best in this format providing much more entertaining games. Federations should be happy because now they can free up their schedule woes in a year-long format. It was really pathetic how some of these Copa matches and league matches were played during FIFA dates. Plus I agree with loco, it makes the Copa Sudamericana much better since it's a consolation prize for the clubs that don't advance. But it's also a disadvantage to smaller clubs that would hope for their chance at international glory with the Sudamericana.
Depends who is playing in the final though. If its Ind. del Valle v Toluca in Montevideo then a sell-out could be a challenge. Anyway, I generally agree with the format change. It always felt like the current format was too compressed. Teams competing in it would be so busy that they would basically have to sacrifice their domestic league campaign. And of course that leads to weaker teams entering the Copa Libertadores. Plus I hated how they took a 2-month break after the quarterfinals, which totally killed the momentum of the tournament. With the new format, the break can occur after the group stage which would be a more natural time to take a break.
True, the quality could actually increase. Especially if they shorten it. In fact in 2017 the Copa Sudamericana may have more big clubs from Argentina than the Copa Libertadores. But the main problem for the Copa Sud is that now it will be played at the same time as the Copa Libertadores. That's a big deal, imo. Sometimes I watch Copa Sud games as a neutral now but if Copa Lib. is being played at the same time/same week I just don't see myself ever doing that.
but in theory, wouldn't that 1 major ticket be mostly 'pre-sold' way in advance. If it's one main venue, 1 'hot-ticket' for a host city and the event becomes more like a Champions League final --preshow, halftime show, etc., I would imagine that most of those seats would already be accounted for just from Corporate buy-ins. Than, you can still sprinkle in a designated amount of traveling supporter fans. I think it will be sold out regardless. And I imagine that the first cities to host would be large population cities with solid infrastructure and with a strong tradition (Buenos Aires, Rio/Sao Paolo, Lima, Santiago, Bogota, Mexico City) -- if you look at this decade's winners, you're also still talking about some of the biggest fan bases...they will travel anywhere to see their club become champ -- Yr - Winner - Subcampeon 2016 - Atl Nacional (Col) - IDV (Ecu) 2015 - River Plate (Arg) - UNAL (Mex) 2014 - San Lorenzo (Arg) - Nacional (Par) 2013 - Atl Mineiro (Bra) - Olimpia (Par) 2012 - Corinthians (Bra) - Boca Jrs (Arg) 2011 - Santos (Bra) - Penarol (Uru) 2010 - Internacional (Bra) - Chivas (Mex)
Miami more then Likely. I heard rumors of that years back but I don't think that would seriously happen.
Nah, I know eventually the copa libertadores will have a single final but it won't be until 10 years from now. You have to let this new format stick and see if the competition grows in numbers. Then you can justify having only one big final. Especially when it's more than likely the bigger clubs with large fan bases will always be at the final. Small teams like Once Caldas will be there from time to time but they will be the underdog that neutrals will root for. Good for everyone if it moves to one final. But now is not the time for it. But I am biased. I really hate the two-legged final because the first leg almost never matters and the second leg is when neutrals tune in and watch.
Unrelated to the copa directly, but while Im in this thread -- what ever happened to Angulo's transfer to Granada? Did it get cancelled definitively? Is he suspended from all FIFA competitions?
While there's been discussion about the format and rules and such, what do you all think of this? Men's clubs would no longer be able to participate in the Copa Libertadores if they don't have an associated women's team. https://www.metroecuador.com.ec/ec/...nino-obligatorio-participar-libertadores.html
All leagues in SA have a couple of years to figure that one out....but I am sure they'll find a random womens team to dress in order to qualify. I am talking about al big clubs that don't already have a female version of the mens side.
It seems that the dream of Alejandro Dominguez is to have the final in single game and he will do everything to change in future editions. The argument against the final in one game will always be the same it is impossible to carry 25,000 people from Belo Horizonte to Santiago for a weekend
as a friend said on twitter Single game in the final of the Libertadores is nothing more than voluntary colonialism. It is the act of being ashamed of who we are culturally and geographically.
According to this CONMEBOL wanted to put the final in Miami but US Soccer wouldn't let them: http://www.si.com/planet-futbol/2016/10/18/copa-libertadores-final-us-soccer-miami
