    Playoff Round schedule:

Tuesday August 16 and Wednesday August 24:

    FC Copenhagen vs. APOEL Nicosia
Dinamo Zagreb vs. Red Bull Salzburg
    Steaua Bucuresti vs. Manchester City
    Ajax vs. FK Rostov
    Young Boys vs. Borussia Monchengaldbach

Wednesday August 17 and Tuesday August 23:

    Ludogorets Razgrad vs. Viktoria Plzen
    Celtic vs. Hapoel Be'er Sheva
    Dundalk vs. Legia Warsaw
    Porto vs. AS Roma
    Villarreal vs. AS Monaco

Here are the first legs TV schedule I found, which includes delayed games which might be live on a different channel:

    Games on Tuesday August 16:

Steaua Bucuresti vs. Manchester City at 2:45 P.M. on Fox Sports 1 (pregame begins at 2:00 P.M.)
Young Boys vs. Borussia Monchengaldbach at 2:45 P.M. on Fox Sports 2 (I don't know for sure, but I'm assuming they will have the same pregame as Fox Sports 1)
Ajax vs. FK Rostov delayed on August 17 at 12:00 A.M. on Fox Sports 2
Dinamo Zagreb vs. Red Bull Salzburg delayed on August 17 at 8:00 A.M. on Fox Sports 2
FC Copenhagen vs. APOEL Nicosia delayed on August 17 at 10:00 A.M. on Fox Sports 2

    Games on Wednesday August 17:

Porto vs. AS Roma at 2:45 P.M. on Fox Sports 2 (I'm assuming there will be a pregame at 2:00 P.M.)
Celtic vs. Hapoel Be'er Sheva delayed at 8:00 P.M. on Fox Sports 2
Villarreal vs. AS Monaco delayed at 10:00 P.M. on Fox Sports 2
Ludogorets Razgrad vs. Viktoria Plzen delayed on August 18 at 8:00 A.M. on Fox Sports 2
Dundalk vs. Legia Warsaw delayed on August 18 at 10:00 A.M. on Fox Sports 2

MSG Plus, which is a regional sports network that gets games from Fox, has a live game with the clubs to be announced scheduled on August 16 but not August 17. Fox Sports 1 will not have a live game on August 17 because they have golf. Fox Soccer Plus has live games with the clubs to be announced on both days. Between Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2, regional sports networks, and Fox Soccer Plus, 6 out of 10 games will be shown live. Fox Deportes does not have any games listed, but hopefully their schedule will change.

I read on another forum that UEFA is considering "legacy" spots for the CL. The general idea is that larger leagues will have top 3 entry into the CL and then the 4th spot would be allocated for sides that have the highest historical coefficient in European competitions. The idea is to get bigger clubs that have sucked in recent years (e.g., Milan and Liverpool) back into the competition. Of course, such a move would distort the coefficients in the same way that dropping 2nd to last place group teams out of the CL and into the Europa League distorts coefficients. But I raise this point because if this move is made, the CL will basically be a watered down super league. It already should be called the League+ some champions (in the same way that Fox Soccer Plus should be called Fox Plus Some Soccer) but this legacy thing would be a total joke. One would think that the piss poor Euro 2016 (mostly caused by teams playing for second to last place entries into the knock-out phases) would have inspired UEFA to focus on quality of play, but I guess not.

So I say all of that because this might be the last year that the European League + some champions is interesting. Get it in while you can. :)

So, some sort of "Heat Index" thing? Say, a team like Manchester United which has had past success, but has been cold lately would get in based off past success?

    A terrible idea.

Exactly. The European co-efficient for the EPL is Liverpool then Man UTD. I'd think that execs at Chelsea and Man City wouldn't be too pleased with this move since neither is historically very strong in Europe and have spent a ton of money trying to achieve global recognition. Anyway, if this happens, my days watching UEFA club competitions will be done. I'll stick with league football and South American continental club games (provided Fox decides to actually air those games). It's a sad state of affairs when CONMEBOL seems more on the ball then UEFA.

Having a "historical" slot is the dumbest idea I've ever heard.

So now you don't even have to play well to be in the "CHAMPIONS" league?

Teams should get in based on how they do, not on history.

Yeah, I've always been in favor of a knockout round at 32 and then a group stage when the field is down to 16. In terms of maximizing appeal, the longer round should be the more competitive one.
I don’t know if that is actually good for big clubs though because they put themselves at risk of being eliminated after only 2 games. Of course I don’t care about that. As a fan I think that risk only adds excitement.

Although if there are only two groups with 8 teams each, which is what the Guardian article seems to be implying, the challenge will be to make each game somewhat meaningful.

Actually group stages benefit larger teams because they have greater depth and are not likely to play poorly over the 6 home and away matches. Knock-out games create a much better chance of an upset.

But I read these articles in a different way. The gist is that the small clubs will playoff against each other while the giants get to sit back and wait. The example of BATE-Real is used in both articles. The point is that BATE in one group and Plzen in another group, for example, would be eliminated because one of those teams would be gone after playing off against each other. Then the groups would be a couple minnows mixed with the big clubs.

In part I get it. Although I watch games like Plzen v. BATE at the group stage, I tend to get to those games after I have watched the games I want to watch. But I also tend to watch the minnows before I watch big clubs that don't interest me at all (Chelsea, Man UTD, increasingly Barcelona). But I know that most people tune in because they want to see the big clubs. As my initial post above highlighted, though, on a global scale Chelsea and Man City, for example, are relatively new as global giants. In the early 2000s City was in the lower leagues and nowhere near European competition and Chelsea didn't start to factor consistently in Europe until Abromovic bought the team. At one point, nobody cared about Chelsea-Hertha Berlin on ESPN.

The last time BATE Borisov and Viktoria Plzen reached the Group Stage was in 2011-2012. Most of the time the five clubs that reach the Group Stage from the Champions Path will all be in different groups.

If the Round of 32 was done in two legs and the Group Stage had 16 clubs, when would you propose the games be played? In order to complete both of those by the end of the year, there would need to be two more Champions League/Europa League matchdays in the fall. The Group Stage would have to end later in December and/or there would need to be Champions League/Europa League matchdays in a greater percentage of the midweeks from September through early December. September, October, and November each have national team matchdays, and each of those takes away two possible Champions League/Europa League matchdays. Starting the qualifying rounds earlier, such as June instead of July, could make good clubs have Champions League or Europa League qualifiers conflicting with national team tournaments and/or club friendlies and tournaments such as the International Champions Cup. Another option would be to keep the current schedule of when the matchdays are, with the Round of 32 in September and the Group Stage from October to February with a big break in between Matchday 4 and Matchday 5.

To conclude, I want the Group Stage to remain with 32 clubs.

Nothing listed about City-Gladbach yet on Fox's site or twitter. I'd guess that they will have to decide how much of the schedule they want to disrupt since the move that would garner the most viewers is to move City-Gladbach to the RSNs, Spurs-Monaco to FS+, and show Leicester on delay on FS2. But that's more complicated than just moving Leicester to delay and dropping City-Gladbach on FS+. No matter what I'd think "little" Leicester will pay the price in terms of live coverage.

In other news, I get why Fox doesn't use FS1 when NASCAR is on but they're not using FS1 so they can show amateur tennis? Is this some major amateur tournament that will actually attract viewers?

City-Gladbach will be on the fox regionals, bumping Spurs-Monaco to FS Plus, and Brugge-Leicester off the Fox TV networks. No idea if the bumping off of Brugge-Leicester will allow that game to be a late addition to the espn3 lineup.

Is there some sort of deal with ESPN(2)s sub-license where Wednesday live matches cannot be shown on FS1 now (so as not to be on opposite ESPN2s coverage)?

There was espn2 coverage yesterday as well (Bayern-Rostov). I think it was just their choice (or maybe contractual requirement) to show the golf. When FS1 doesn't have a game, they put a game on plus rather than the multimatch.

It was definiately a contractual requirement.

Fox Sports and the U.S. Golf Association have inked a 12-year pact for comprehensive golf coverage.

Beginning in 2015, the agreement makes Fox and Fox Sports 1 - the national cable network launching Aug. 17 - the principal destinations for golf tournaments such as the U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open, the U.S. Senior Open Championships, National Amateur Championships and other LIVE golf content. The deal runs through 2026.

The deal ends NBC Sports' 19-year relationship with the U.S. Open. ESPN will no longer show the first two rounds of the tournament, the second of four majors on the golf calendar, and NBCUniversal's Golf Channel will no longer have the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women's Amateur events.

This is the first time that a premier golf tournament will be broadcast on Fox. Under the pact, Fox Sports will air nearly 150 hours of championship golf. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

We're only into MD1 but Fox shows on delay the same games that air on ESPN2. Bayern-Rostov was on FS2 last night and Juve-Sevilla was supposed to air tonight at midnight but was pushed to Thursday at 5PM and replaced by City-Gladbach tonight on FS2. There are pluses and minuses to this move if you don't watch ESPN2 live. The plus of having a Fox option on delay is that ESPN almost always features spoilers by the announcers of other games and the ESPN announcers aren't nearly as good now that Derek Rae has split and Adrian Healey is rarely used. The minus about Fox is that they are in love with the news crawl for repeat and those news crawls *always* feature spoilers for the delayed game. If you want to watch spoiler free then you've got cover the bottom part of your TV. I keep thinking that the day is going to come when I no longer need to cover my TV and that day just never seems to arrive.

On that final note, since the Legia-Dortmund game doesn't air on ESPN Deportes until 5am Thursday and that was my top priority today, I am currently watching ESPN3. No news crawl and no announcers spoilers. Plus what seems to be a non-ESPN announcer, so it's all good.

It looks like the Highlights show is 60 minutes this season and not 30 minutes like last year. Not sure how to feel about that.
