What a half both teams great defense great skillful control of the ball. What's better then this? I fell the same way like when I go home to my old neighborhood.
2nd half not as good as the first half. I was hoping it would not go to pks. It would have ended sooner if one of the coaches replaced a keeper with a garbage can. What was the idea of the German back putting his hands up? He had a good game up to that point. Coaches make subs before the pks they don't put the pk specialists on field. Especially the Italian coach. I think if the keeper did not guess even an educated case one of the teams would have won sooner. Fatigue lowers their percentage big time. I am glad Germany won, but I would be happy if Italy won. My mothers Italian my father was a German.
Atta Boy Conte sub that imbecile Zaza in just to take the worst penalty run up and shot in the history of the game.
I have he was trying to do two things by doing that. Not giving a way where he was trying to shoot. Plus since the keeper can move laterally before the kick is made. If the keeper guessed a side. It took extra time to take the kick. So after he guessed the side the taker could put the ball in the other side.
Even when Germany are terrible at penalties they still win. As a Chelsea fan I'm relieved that Conte can get started on our Transfers now, if a week makes a difference at all, I think this trophy has France's name on it though, we'll see if they can withstand the pressure of a solid Iceland defence tonight. Really enjoying the Euros.
Keeper did poorly because of too much technology. The freaking iPad of his keeper coach giving him tendency of the Italian shooters. After 120 minute fatigue effects the shooters pk percentages. He should just get low and stay low and just react to the shoot. He does that keeper will stop most pks. How many pk went over the cross bar and to the side or right at the keeper. Don't guess he stops those and they win.
EC 1976 - missed 1 WC 1982 - missed 1 WC 1986 - missed 0 WC 1990 - missed 0 EC 1996 - missed 0 WC 2006 - missed 0
I hate penalties - aside from the WC 2006 win - too many heartbreaking defeats from WC1994 through to this debacle. Good omen for the Germans last few times Italy were eliminated by PKs: WC1994 Brazil WC1998 France Euro 2008 Spain Euro 2016 Germany.... I cringed all the way through the shootout, couple times just felt like we'd done it again and beaten the Germans, but the Germans just don't lose at PKs. The pressure of the situation got to both teams, but can't help but wonder if we had our best penalty takers on the field (i.e. Marchisio, De Rossi, Florenzi, Montolivo) instead of out injured/subbed. Germans have ended the hoodoo and what a matchup Germany/France promises to be.
Ya, but that's not how German soccer-school works.^^ If you are into that just because you can observe it on that game – or if you kick a ball with friends or like to be a keeper. That's German goal keeper school (if you are into it) and the Italian looks quite similar to me and both are countries that have a historical long list of good keepers – so it might not be so wrong: As a keeper first rule is – always keep the eyes on the ball (not the feet not the player); but during pk if they step up - look them into the face, that makes them nervous. You can see that – none of that guys is looking at the keeper. They see everything except the keeper. The moment they are going to shoot the ball – your eyes go back onto the ball. That is why you can dance a pirouette– their eyes are on the ball. Focus is on the ball. Everything around is blended away. Now – if you do know where the guy will shoot - you know what to do. If you do not know where they guy will shoot – there is a rule that says – at least do something. In German soccer – you learn that as a goal-keeper at least 50% of the people will always say, that any goal was your fault. No matter if it is true or not. That why if you ever shouted at a German keeper and he did not even look is because that guy heard that since he is 12 years old. Since then he learned not to care. Only during pks it is the time where you are not hold responsible. So if you do not move – you gamble with this. As then they will say: If he would have jumped at least in one corner – he might have caught it. So you decided at least if that guy is moving – which direction you want to go. What you can do before – is a step in the opposite direction. That might can cause a shooter to change his mind and at least shoots a ball somewhere. It is all psycho games and pressure. So you do that step and then jump in the opposite direction – if you are lucky the ball comes that way and the rest is reflexes. That is why Buffon jumped over the ball and I assume Italian school works the same. On Neuer you can see that on the guy who shot twice. The first time he did not get it, was because he made the side step and so he did not had the energy in the jump to go full length. The second time – the same guy shot – he gambled that he will take the opposite corner and there you can see that he would have been able to jump so far. That means – he did not know on the first penalty where the guy shoots. The rest is timing and experience. You could see that on Buffon. He guessed mostly right. That is experience, but nevertheless it is always a guess game. And that stuff with where the guys shoot – even a keeper is a human being. I mean we can test that here you go – please get that in your head: Sakai left, Kiyotake right or middle, Kagawa left, Shoji left, Kobayashi right; Hasabe right, Maybe Oshima left or Usami middle; in rare cases Asano right; And this after 120 min. in a EU final. If you are not that studied guy like Lehmann and have a note - you do know Hasabe and Kobayashi, if Asano gets in – some guy might tell you: He tends to go right – but what you make out of this – is your stuff. If you are convinced that this guy shoots left, but your note says right, and you go right and he shoots left. That happens to you once, then never again. So all that stuff is more a suggestion than a guideline. But do not react, like you suggested, first if the ball comes in. That comes at ~120kmh (~75mph) and just travels 11 meters (12 yards). Most calculations go with 110 kmh (~70 mph), that is ~ 0,4 seconds till goal and you have ~0,3 seconds to make a decision and execute it. That is ~ 0,1 second, you want to demand from yourself to see where the ball goes, while it is already on its way. I mean try it out at your local soccer field. If you can do that – I would consider a goal-keeper career, as you are the fastest man alive.^^ In case you are not. Up is a pk guideline from one German keeper school.^^ And that is why no German in the world says a keeper preformed poorly during pks, you can only preform good and be everybody's hero, but never bad, as this is the only time of the game when... tltr; Most intense game ever... From Cologne. Of course do we love Italians and Buffon (yeah think what you want - at my place everybody loves that guy). That was pure horror over 120 min. and everybody said - that was more intense than WC 2014 final. Big respect to Italy. A little piece of the hearts of the guys here said: Nooo, too. That's why we hate to play you, but I saw it again on YT - and went up again as Hector scored. OMG was this intense. Seriously hope that we never ever have to see us again in a tournament. It is no fun for multiple reasons and sorry for the German guys hanging around at your public viewing places I do not think that is respectfull. At our place even couples split houses, so that the players can better understand what they yell at the screen.^^
