I guess you and I saw a different second half...I didn't see the first half so I can't comment at all on that. The red card is never a second caution. It has barely been a caution all tournament and has certainly not been a second caution. In today's game, that is just not a sending off. Keep in mind this is the same referee that failed to give one of the most obvious second caution sending offs in a major Final that I've ever seen. Look at the 39th minute mark in the match and 49:30 in the YouTube video below. This is the same referee that wouldn't give a second caution for this. Yet in a semif-final he sends a guy off for that. If he was going to give it, he needed to be decisve and quick. Not timid and slow. Looked like he got baited by the Chileans into giving it. Very poor refereeing all around. Also, once again a referee in this tournament completely fails to deal with dissent. Once he decided to give the yellow and red he wouldn't deal at all with the Colombians mobbing him. Keeper comes 70 yards out of his goal to mob the referee along with 7 other teammates and he doesn't issue one caution for dissent. Just poor refereeing. Compare that to how Kuipers dealt with a somewhat controversial PK call in his Euro match yesterday between Spain and Croatia. Gave two cautions for dissent after awarding the penalty. I don't know how you don't think that is a PK. It seems pretty clear to me. Sanchez got caught. Maybe you can make the case that Sanchez dragged his leg and tried to inititate the contact there. I, personally, don't see it. But either way, you can't give nothing there. For me, it's either a PK or a caution for simulation. You just can't give a play on there. He then, for me, missed an easy red on James Rodriguez at the end. Game over and he's frustrated and he just takes out a Chilean player from behind well after the ball is gone. Easy SFP card to give with the game over there. Protect the players that are going to be in the Final. Overall, a performance consistent with the poor refereeing throughout the tournament.
Not trying to argue - just asking how this is SFP if the game is over and the ball is gone. Even if the game isn't over (I didn't see it due to the delay) if the ball is long gone and he "takes out a Chilean player from behind" - isn't that VC?
So what should you do when a foul is only first-yellow worthy and you go to pull out your yellow you realize that?
The game wasn't actually over, technically. It was over as a contest. Colombia were not going to come back. That's what I meant as the game was over. Easy red card as it would have no bearing on influencing the outcome of the match.
You congratulate yourself for not falling into the silly trap of having different standards for 1st yellows and 2nd yellows, give the 2nd yellow and the red, and walk away confident that you made the right call. And then get reamed by coaches, players and analysts for not having a harsher standard for 2nd yellows.
It seems to me that he missed two clear penalties, one for each team. Also, it looked like simulation on the part of the Chilean player when the Colombian player was given his 2nd yellow. I also believe there was a studs up challenge by one of the Colombian players that wasn't given any card after the RC.
