We probably would have lost, true. But I dont think we'd have just given up. Thats what the commentators were saying about Mexico. No offense to anyone, but after it got 3-0 I saw an awful lot of players standing around. (Not that I minded one bit).
I suspect you're right. I think Chile is really good and several of the S. American teams are really good. And I don't think Mexico is as bad as they looked today. I think they broke mentally. When they went down 3-0 I think several just wanted the game to end. And of course Chile was tasting blood in the water, so...it was a rout.
In dozens of matches I've been to, and hundreds more I've seen on TV, I've never heard anything like that. I have no doubt it happens though: I have no doubt that four people here, five people there, chant stuff like that. Get enough people together, and morons will do moron things. That doesn't make it any less despicable, of course, and I wish every person who does that a case of chlamydia or something more painful. But there's no comparison between that and 20,000 people yelling "************!" all together each time the keeper takes a kick, or the rain of debris that comes down on opposing players EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. they score a goal against Mexico. It's a false comparison.
I have been to a bunch of USA matches and the worst thing I heard from USA fans was F U Ahole. I have also been to a lot of Mexican matches and let me tell you, every time I go there are horrible chants and beer being thrown all over. I am glad they are eliminated and won't be playing at Soldier Field. It will make for a more pleasant atmosphere as I cheer on Colombia. For sure.
I was enjoying this so much that I didn't want to reply here. I said a few days ago that we can beat Chile. I still think it would have been possible but I take back my statement that we are currently better than Chile. They finally seem to be clicking, and while beating Mexico as a CONMEBOL team isn't a huge result, beating the top CONCACAF side 7-0 (and possibly the best team in the world outside of UEFA and CONMEBOL) is a different story. We wouldn't have lost by this magnitude. We are the team that's given Chile a beating, not the other way around. Although that was a friendly, we did beat them 6-0 at one time. Maestri loved playing against Chile. However seeing Chile last night, I am somewhat glad we went out the way we did. We gave Colombia a game and ended up going out on penalties. If we had gone through, I'm not sure we would have won, and I really don't want to see Chile in another final.
Luckily for us, we've already received our beatings. 7-0 against Brazil as well as 6-0 against Uruguay in the 2010 qualifiers. I don't think we'll lose like Mexico did any time soon. I hope not anyways.
I guess what I am going to have to ask people is was this the real Chile or was the real Chile the one that looked average in the Group stage? And without Vidal will they revert back to that mediocre Chile that seemed so lost defensively? Those questions will be answered on Wednesday.
As far as the actual match is concerned, I think it's possible to read too much into it: you're never remotely as good as your best match or as bad as your worst. It was a bad night for Mexico, yes, but just one night. They'll be fine.
Sure ? Copa America 1955 : 4 - 5 Copa America 1956 : 3 - 4 friendly 1961 : 2 - 5 Copa del Pacifico 1965 : 1 - 4 WC qualifiers 1985 : 2 - 4 Copa America 1991 : 2 - 4 friendly 1996 : 0 - 4 WC qualifier 1997 : 0 - 4 WC qualifier 2011 : 2 - 4 WC qualifier 2015 : 3 - 4 Maybe not taking 6 or 7, but taking more than 4 goals, there are plenty of them, while Peru has only achieved it 3 times : 1995 in a friendly : 6 -0 (the one you mention) 1953 Copa del Pacífico : 5 - 0 1954 Copa del Pacífico : 4 - 2 Our head to head record, currently is : 21 wins for Peru - 14 Draws - 44 wins for Chile with 101 goals for Peru; 134 goals for Chile http://www.11v11.com/teams/peru/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Chile/
All those results aren't beatings though! Aside from the 4-0, they're 1 or 2 goal deficits for the most part.
For most people taking more than 3 goals is already a beating, but I grant it to you, for a few of them , it isn't
A 3 goal deficit is a beating, but I was talking more along the lines of more than 5 goals. Unless we're playing in Santiago, more often than not Peru vs Chile is a competitive fixture.
I still can't believe what i witnessed last night.. I don't think anybody expected it to be this One Sided.. Total Insanity!
competitive ? If you want to believe that, well, go on and lie to yourself. Truth is that about 30 years ago and before, there was certain parity between both teams. But since then, our superiority has become overwhelming. Btw, (to get back to topic), it's something pretty much alike on regards to Mexico, whom in this last 30 years has achieved an overwhelming superiority over Chile. There have been upsets along the way, though, being last nights match a very big one of them that favoured us, but truth is, head to head, despite this last result, Mexico is still over Chile.
In the last 6 home games, we've won 4, you've won 2. We also conceded last minute in the 2011 Copa America and if you really want to take it to Santiago, we played a great game against you with 10 men in last years Copa America and drew you in Santiago in the World Cup qualifiers of 2006. Don't lie to yourself. I am well aware of your superiority in level but to say our matches aren't competitive for the most part is ridiculous. Off the top of my head, the only matches I can say that were easy wins for Chile as of late was the 4-3 and 3-1 losses in Lima.
