Referee: Patricio Loustau (ARG) Assistant Referee 1: Ezequiel Brailovsky (ARG) Assistant Referee 2: Ariel Scime (ARG) Fourth Official: Mark Geiger (USA) Reserve Assistant: Charles Morgante (USA) Let's get this one started. 20th minute...ouch, Colombia player kicks Peruvian player in the head. I didn't see a card (although, to be fair, my kids were clamoring for Ice Cream).
25th Minute - Peruvian 2 is late to stop a shot and stomps Colombia 16 on the ankle/top of foot. He's still down but as of yet no card. [EDIT: Goal kick, no card. This can get ugly...]
'33 Bacca barrels into a Peruvian player from behind, just a regular foul, no card. I have to think the referees were instructed to keep their cards in their pocket if at all possible after last night.
I saw a convo about Clattenberg in the Euro ref forum about early cards - this is really a game that needed an early card. And as I said that, the last 10 minutes or so were played fairly cleanly. Not sure what changed.
Hmm referee realizes that he is standing on the wrong side of the field to start the half. Hope he holds it together...
Tapia just bum rushes Bacca? over, off the ball, in the penalty box, no foul, no card. Bacca? grabs Tapia and brings him down with him, Tapia hurt. To be honest, while the commentary folk think it should have been called a PK, that would have been a pretty rough result for Peru. Not because it wasn't a PK - it was - but to call that when you haven't called anything else like that, would almost be deciding the game (which is why refs shouldn't get boxed into this situation where they play so loose a call seems to be deciding the game).
Yeah, I think this is right, but dang this is some really bad refereeing. No way that the first yellow card should have been given in the 64'. Needed to come out much earlier.
'75 James frees himself by getting face to the hand of a Peruvian defender, no call. Commentary thinks it's a good no call - I don't (I don't think it was a card, but it was a foul).
Going back to 62', did Loustou call a throw-in infraction against Peru for putting the bank back into play too far downfield? Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
It looked to me on the replay like James put his hand up near his neck, didn't come close to where the defender was holding his face. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
'84 minute, commentary thinks it was outside the box had it been called, but I don't think it was - was it a foul?
Looked like a foul, and looked like the AR wanted to talk about it since he stepped onto the field. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I was at the match and thought Loustau had an absolutely shocking match. He called something on the order of 5-6 fouls against Peru in the first ten or so minutes to of the match. Yellow should have come out then I think. But I knew he was having a shocker on a ball being sheparded out by a Peru defender. Colombian makes contact and Peru player falls down as the ball goes over the endline off of the Peru player. Loustau gives a goal kick. I said to my friend when it happened that Loustau had no balls to make decisions tonight.
Agreed. It's probably a foul, but also some major simulation. Seemed fair to ignore it since we don't often see someone cautioned for exaggerating the severity of a foul, Blas Perez aside.
I was assuming that Patricio is somehow related to Juan Carlos (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Carlos_Loustau), who had two of the most interesting qualifiers for Italia '90 - the Brazil-Chile flare/simulated injury/walk-off /tournament ban and the TRI-USA qualifier in Port of Spain (the "Shot Heard 'Round the World") I would imagine he could give some useful insight on challenging match situations. EDIT: And as I clicked on the Wikipedia link it says this is his son. Should have read what I wrote. Sorry
