So far as I can tell, Mr. Roldan has generated no commentary in the Copa -- anyone know his reputation, tendencies, whatever?

He does not appear afraid to issue cards:

. . . for the US that could be an issue if they win as they have several players at risk for a semis accumulation suspension . . .

I guess Jones got the red for the hand to the face of Valencia?

Well this match just got interesting. 52' 2nd Yellow to Ecuador for a kick out, then a red to Jermaine Jones for what looks like a hand to the face in the aftermath of the foul.

Did they show why Jones was shown a straight red? I saw why Valencia deserved the second yellow.

    J. Jones makes his hand into somewhat of a fist, and brings it up to the Ecuadorian's face, making a little contact.

yes, Jones was a direct red.

The yellow on Wood is an interesting talking point though since he restarted the match before the players were off the field, and then went back and did the restart over...with a freekick to Ecuador when the original foul was on Ecuador. Or did I totally miss something. It was hard to tell since they were showing us all sorts of replays

Plus they restarted play before Jones had left the field.

There was no contact from the replay I saw. Not even close, he got restrained well before that came close to the face.

FOX's "rules expert" Dr.Joe says it's becauss of the hand to the face.

Is that the kind of thing that is appealable?

For no more than he did it could just as well be reported as "Reduce to equate"?

Dr. Joe, for what it's worth, agrees with the straight red to Jones for contact to the face.

Whole exchange doesn't happen if he would have kept it just a little tighter...

I guess the straight red came from the AR- who can say if his threshold for red is the same and the center's?

In the post-foul skuffle, Jones puts his hand in a loosely closed fist and gently strikes or attempts to strike an opponent.

Soft? Yes. But it's still a red card.

There must have been a replay I didn't see (my wife is making me watch parts of Lip Synch Battle as this goes down).

On one replay, I thought it looked like light contact.

Jones is such a hot head. That foul was easily going to be a 2nd yellow, you're about to be up 11 v 10, and you go and bop the other guy in the face. Was it a hard punch? No, not at all. But you can't do that! FIFA has been pretty clear about their feelings about contact above the shoulders when the ball is out of play for years now. I just... baffling decision by Jones.

How does Wood get a yellow (and play restart for that matter) with Jones still on the field?

Anyone thinking red on that yellow to Ecuador #4 just now? That boot was crazy high.
