It seems like most crews have had a 4th from another country. Any idea why tonight sees an all american crew?

Not a good start by either Marrufo or Manikowski

Don't think there was too much rhyme or reason. But Villarreal is there as a reserve so he's going to do a few 4ths in the first round. Always a chance this would happen.

Great persistent infringement caution from Marrufo early on (the type that gets classified as UB; multiple fouls by multiple players).

It was close, but I think Manikowski would want the offside in the 6' back. Player looked to be in his own half when the ball was played.

No PI for #2? Bar was set low on the first one. Now he doesn't want to give the second one in the first 15. This one would have been better.

I thought he was in his own half on first look.

This is not actually a change in law or interpretation. They just changed the language to clarify. Previously, the laws said this:

So the halfway line technically belonged to both halves, but it — as the common test question asked — belonged to the attacking team for the purposes of offside. The attacker would still be in his own half. You can imagine how this is unclear/confusing. Hence the rewrite, which now says this:

Much clearer, but same outcome (and not really a change in law as a result).

Now in this case, the freeze frame on the broadcast appears to be a split second too early. The attacker may have been leaning over the halfway line by the time the ball was played, which is why it was flagged. Incredibly close and almost impossible to tell from the angles we have. I'd go with the AR over the commentators (and Dr. Joe) any day.

Looks like the players forgot how a dropped ball works.

Marrufo blew the whistle, dropped the ball and the keeper just let it sit with no one coming to challenge. To me it looks like the players are complaining the keeper is taking to long to play, but anyone can go up and challenge him. Jair also looked like he was trying to point and say "you can go play!"

Really odd situation to end the half.

So.... the two handballs and the Sanchez trip.... not sure about the handballs, but the Sanchez trip looked like a clear PK.

    Time for a discussion of:
    Bicycle kicks
    Handling/Penalty
Match management in the closing minutes!

The last ten minutes are often the most challenging

Today those last ten minutes were about 22 minutes long. :)

So a rather forceful kick to the head is not a send off? I would guess Cakir would have pulled out a red card on that one.

So, I amend my remarks above about the 6'. Looking at this replay, with a better angle, I think a portion of the body is in the attacking half. I think Manikowski got this right, despite the caption for this video:

I would say caution for that bicycle kick, not a send off. The Cakir incident from a few years ago is a lot different in my eyes.

We will almost certainly have to wait awhile, but when the tournament is concluded, maybe we'll get some inside info from one of the ARs on some of the major decision points from this match.

Manikowski buries Jair on that one. Jair doesn't want it but the flag leaves him with a difficult choice. Jair should have gone with his gut.

    This crew is done.

Saying absolutely nothing about the penalty call, we're at a 31-game tournament with, we've now learned, 19 referees. And Marrufo's crew comes into the tournament as the #2 American crew. This was likely their only match no matter what happened tonight.

After missing the other one though, maybe two wrongs make a right?

Manikowski did his job. I think this is a penalty. I also agree the Jair did not want it, because his m.o. for years has been to avoid making major decisions unless he has no choice.

There are plenty of reasons why that should not have been a PK. Thee are also some reasons why it should be a PK.
Many PKs are very clear, and have NO reasons why they should not be given. I think that in other cases this would not be called, and I agree that Manikowski forced Marrufo into it. This was unlike the PK in the France match today were the AAR confirmed the incident for Kassai, and there were no reasons not to give that one. Kassai may have called it anyway without the AARs assistance, and he certainly did not have a problem with making the call.
I am not sure that is the case for Marrufo. But kudos to him for accepting it and dealing with the uproar.

The penalty seemed 50-50. I can see it either way. What I couldn't believe was how physical the Bolivia players got with Marrufo after the call. He was being manhandled. That is absolutely unacceptable and I hope there are repercussions for that.

Referee needs to help himself there by issuing a red card for AL or contact with an official.

Agreed. Until referees start looking out for themselves nothing will change.
