19' 0-0 #19 Kate Wiesner give-and-go with #7 Spaanstra at arc top box left, diagonal return pass sends Wiesner to 5m wide left. She chases a 1-v-1 through box left, ball cleared away. Pinto chips ball back to arc top left, #10 Sánchez back-heel to 14m center. Kuhlmann cuts from the right, hop right roundhouse volley dink shot -- double-blocked by Proulx charging out, ball motionless at spot as both overshoot. Proulx dives back onto ball first.

21' 0-0 Canniff down box right, this time Grosso wins at box right foot.
22' 0-0 Grosso's clearance not settled, Kuhlmann and Sánchez wrest it away. Sánchez spins 210 cw away from 1, shoots hard from arc top mid-right to right post, Proulx catches face-high.

24' 0-0 #9 Jordyn Huitema posts up at midfield box right for a chest-and-spin -- #4 Naomi Girma steps up to the curve of her spine, jams a knee in and fouls her going past. Even water polo players think that's too close.

26' 0-0 Brief stoppage, all resume. Briefer stoppage: ref runs to sideline, gives defective electronics gizmo to 4R?

27' 0-0 Canada fk to 22m mid-right, jumping back-header flick-on sends #7 Shana Flynn to box top right -- stopped by a decent 1-v-1 recovery. Couple of flicks, USA clear. Canada backpass to Proulx.

28' 0-0 Canada probe at arc top right touch, Pinto wins it 1-v-2 and quick longball  past midfield -- nobody there.

29' 0-0 #15 Kennedy Wesley drives down box right to endline, ball stuffed at box right foot but off Canada for a ck.

29' 0-0 USA right ck, #19 Wiesner inswings a bit too far, off back of crossbar 1/3 right and skitters into end zone.

31' 0-0 USA longball up wide right drops perfectly to Kuhlmann's foot -- magical soft foottop gather absorbs all of the energy  Cross floats to 3m right post, Proulx catches face-high.

32' 0-0 Canada awkward back-header in own 1/3, Kuhlmann cuts center-to-left and collects between 4. Drives down mid-left to 10m, cross to spot cleared away.

33' 1-0 #15 Wesley spins down wide right to 10m, pulls up and surveys the box, then chips a cross -- high, outswings to 8m center. Three 1-v-1 pairs all distract everybody -- #7 Alexa Spaanstra cuts left-to-center ahead of her 1, right instep grasstop putt-volley beats Proulx under her left hand, into back right low. GK has no chance on an untouched volley from that close.

36' 1-0 Wesley to 2m box right, high cross drops over 7m center -- Spaanstra jumps 1-v-4, ball misses everybody and bounces behind. Wiesner collects at endline wide left, comes back to 7m and sends a cross through 4m chest-high. Proulx comes out defenseless, Kuhlmann jumps for a right roundhouse volley -- both miss ball, Kuhlmann delivers a WWE right knee to the left temple, drives Proulx's head down so hard her torso bends in flight. Both pop up, ball still live at 4m box right. Quick cross to 5m center, Kuhlmann jumps 2-v-3 but gets under it, heads it away from goal. Stoppage, Proulx lies down holding head.

37' 1-0 Long stoppage for head injury. Backup GK is up, getting instruction ...

40' 1-0 Proulx up, wants to resume!! They wave off the sub  Whence protocol?

42' 1-0 Sánchez disrupts from behind, digs ball away as she spins down onto own back -- and ball drops across her chest and off her right arm. Handball or dangerous play :p

43' 1-0 #16 Karina Rodríguez chips high to 10m right post(?), Sánchez jumps with 1 and flick-heads just wide right.

45' 1-0 USA right throw-in deep, to Spaanstra shielding 2 at 8m box right. Spaanstra tunnels self between them, drags ball with her, goes to box right foot but loses it over. +3'.

I missed the first twenty minutes or so, but from what I've seen the USA is completely dominating every aspect of this match.

45+1' (of +3') 2-0 #18 Jaelin Howell collects a clearance at arc top right, drives vs 2 through box top mid-right, to 7m wide right. Howell spins ccw past 1 to 2m box right. Cross bends away past #6 Samantha Chang at 6-top, bounces free at 7m center -- nobody can believe it! Ball bounces off Kuhlmann's thighs, she shoots roundhouse up centerline -- Proulx on knees at 6-top, double-blocks it away to 9m 1/5 right(?). #17 Jordan Canniff pounces first, volleys past everybody into center back low.

    45+3' (of +3') 2-0 Sánchez shoots high.

    HT 2-0. Canada's backline needs a 5-Second Fix!

    46' 2-0 Canada subs in:
    - (1 of 3) #4 Nahida Baalbaki for #14 Caitlin Shaw
    - (2 of 3) #11 Camila Gomez for #20 Jayde Riviere.
And Canada still have Proulx's head to mind, and #5 Kennedy Faulknor not playing.

49' 2-0 USA high pressure pinning Canada at own box top. USA steal again, surge at 25m center, pass down box left. High cross to 6-top right, Sánchez outjumps 1 and heads across mouth, to 1m left post with 2 wide-open thereat!! Canniff hop-volleys but shanks it off her laces, ball pops up away from goal to 3m 1/3 left and Proulx has to dive forward to it :ROFLMAO:

50' 2-0 Canada longball sends Flynn chasing 1-v-1 to 6-top right. #1 Laurel Ivory slides under both, smothers ball and takes bony parts to her upper body. All resume.

51' 2-0 USA dump ball in, Canada clear. Sánchez chips from arc top right, just over left 90.

Proulx should have come out of the game! If she was my DD I would be over the fence and telling the coach in no uncertain terms to take her out. Sometimes the right thing to do needs to be done- you can't let "facts" or "protocol" defeat wisdom. She might hate me for a while....

52' 2-0 USA pass from arc top box left to endline mid-left for #19 Canniff(?) overlapping down wide left -- but 1+ step offside.

54' 3-0 #15 Wesley sprints to 21m box right, fast flat shross bends way wide left -- no, it's a pinpoint bullet pass!! ;) Sánchez breaks through to 6-top center, #14 Civana Kuhlmann to 3m left post -- leaps into a flying lunge, off right knee and drills back left edge. Canada look shellshocked.

57' 3-0 Kuhlmann runs right-to-left and collects alone at 22m arc left, dribbles to 14m in a wide 1-v-1 and shoots left instep across mouth -- just high.

59' 3-0 Canada right throw-in(?), Huitema spin-and-cross over mouth -- too far, onto roof.

60' 3-0 USA right ck, Pinto outswings to 11m left post. Kuhlmann awkward standing-bicycle (using her defender as a balancing-post ;)), shanked wide left.

62' 3-0 USA buildup at arc top box left, chip too far down mid-left. Kuhlmann chases to endline, ball spins to a stop, stays in!! Kuhlmann falling-down one-touch cross floats to Proulx. Canada's high line has leaked all game, either by drives down box edges or these pass-and-chase combos.

69' 3-0 Sánchez steals from Chang at 24m mid-left, turns away. Bad pass, Pinto wrests it free, pokes it to box top mid-right. Kuhlmann pops it high down box right to ~10m, Canniff volleys high across mouth -- Proulx catches at 4m 1/5 left.

72' 3-0 USA subs in (1 of 3) #11 Izzy Rodriguez for #17 Jordan Canniff (14 yrs old ).

74' 3-0 Canada high cross from box right, USA shield 3-v-1 at 9m 1/3 right -- ball bounces untouched behind everybody. #15 Wesley(?) turns and chases, cleverly heads ball sideways and passes through box left. Don't let it bounce again!

75' 3-0 Canada subs in (3 of 3) #12 Vidal Kats for #10 Anyssa Ibrahim.

76' 3-0 Canada fk, just high and wide right.
76' 3-0 USA subs in (2 of 3) #20 Frankie Tagliaferri for #10 Ashley Sánchez.

77' 3-0 Canada pass into box top arc left, rattles off shoes and pops up into #15 Wesley's right(?) wrist tucked against body -- no call. USA clear.

79' 3-0 LB #3 Grosso shoots right instep from arc top box left, bends just wide left.

80' 3-0 Kuhlmann flicks right outstep upfield from circle top left toward 24m mid-left -- correct angle and diagonal, sends #19 Wiesner in a 1-v-1 chase but her defender wins it.

81' 3-0 #12 Kats harasses at box top right touch as #4 Girma turns to shield, reaches foot around Girma and pulls her down sideways into far touch. No foul, ball out. After the play, Kats sinks to one knee, holding right ankle high. Canada has no more subs. Brief stoppage, Kats treated in far touch as all others get water.

83' 3-0 USA left throw-in at own box top, 11-v-10. USA hold at circle back, ref waves Kats back on.

84' 3-0 USA subs in (3 of 3) #3 Sophia Smith (15 yrs old) for #14 Civana Kuhlmann.

87' 3-0 USA advances up the left, pass to Tagliaferri at 15m wide left. Tagliaferri cuts centerward between 2, takes them with her to 15m 6-left -- then taps a diagonal ground pass through 6-top left post, just misses #19 Wiesner at 8m and rolls to Proulx.

88' 3-0 Smith shoots hard right foot from ~box top mid-right, bends wide right low as Proulx dove to (her) left post.

90+1' (of +3') 4-0 Canada long backpass from (their) wide right to Proulx way up at box top arc (our) left. Proulx tries a one-touch right instep sweep to her LB -- quacks it off the bend in her instep, ball dies across box top. #3 Sophia Smith collects to 8m right post as Proulx scrambles back, shoots right instep just past Proulx's trailing leg, into left back low. Ugh -- lightning strikes Proulx again, that's how she lost the CONCACAF W20 final to Ashley Sánchez.

90+3' (of +3') 5-0 USA chase to 14m 1/4 left, Canada caught discombobulated, cannot clear. Clusterfrog at arc top, Spaanstra collects centerward to 22m arc left with Canada's box in total disarray. Spaanstra simple left instep vertical pass rolls down 6-right, springs #20 Frankie Tagliaferri lurking onside at 15m 6-right, far from the madding scrum. Tagliaferri outraces Proulx to 6m, right instep cut shot bends over Proulx's legs again, across goalline into left side netting just behind left post.

FT 5-0. Deflating end for a depleted Canada side, looking flat and mentally halfway to the bus already. Never turn your back on big cats.

Well...it was clear before the tournament even started, but now there can really be no doubts that Group B was significantly stronger than Group A. I mean for goodness sake, Group B's last place team (Jamaica) beat Group A's winner (Haiti) in qualifying and now Group B wins the semifinals by a 8-0 combined score.

Glimoy reported it: "both miss ball, Kuhlmann delivers a WWE right knee to the left temple, drives Proulx's head down so hard her torso bends in flight"
Those are all the "symptoms" I need to make a decision. Even though she hopped up after the collision, the fact that she went back down to the ground holding her head after the ball was dead was also a pretty good clue. If I was the coach on the sideline, iI would have pulled her. As said in my post, protocol should not supplant wisdom or good judgement.

And the limited reading I have done says that concussion symptoms don't always 'present' right away.

BTW, I think she is a helluva good goalkeeper.

If nothing else, the gaffe resulting in goal 4 could be a sign of concussion. I agree completely with CoachJon, why take a chance?

I bet that after the game, she goes through the post-concussion return-to-play protocol.

I was very impressed with some of the US forwards... very impressed. The future for the US is bright! I'll go a step further. Some of said forwards are more impressive than current members of the senior team. I'm thinking that if Pugh can cut it at the senior level, why can't others? At least it would be interesting to give them a call up to see how they stacked up.

I might even be tempted to rethink my opinion of Ellis if I saw her actively try to work more Pugh's into the lineup. Not saying they're necessarily ready to play just yet but why not call them into a camp. Sanchez and the blonde forward with pig tails really stood out.

is the protocol required after every hit in the head?

i hear what you guys are saying. but i'm loathe to second guess the trainers who are nose to nose with the injured player, looking into eyes and listening to responses.

If a player exhibits any concussion symptoms, she can't play until she is cleared by a medical professional. If she has been diagnosed with a concussion, she must go through the protocol. The protocol steps start after she is free of concussion symptoms. It takes about four days to go through the steps, which are progressive.

History says that trainers employed by a team are suspect. They have inherent conflicts of interest. The trend, in professional sports and elsewhere, is for the decisions to be made by truly independent medical personnel who have the legal authority to make these kinds of diagnoses -- which does not include trainers. (Trainers can't diagnose. They can determine the needed therapy, but physicians diagnose.)

I was serious about the muffed clearance. That is exactly the kind of thing I've seen before from keepers whacked in the head who kept playing and later were determined to have suffered concussions, as well as from field players.

don't i remember her making the same kind of weak, muffed clearance (sanchez put it away for the winner that time) in the u20 wcq against the u.s.? i don't think she was concussed then.
