Using our own naming convention for the founding of a city for a team name is American. Kind of like Houston 1836.
A watch party has been set up and it will act as a mini group meeting (unless a bunch show up). I'm hoping to workshop some chants... actually I'm ridiculously excited to work on and hear some chants. Plus I want to set the SG name in stone... this seems like a good time to do that and people are really wanting to move forward. It was actually initially the FO that reached out to see if we wanted to do a watch party. I know some of them will be there. And the plan seems to be that there will be a watch party every month, at a different location to spread the word. Two local bars/restaurants actually reached out to us on the FB group about hosting us. We'll be at the AO bar, Ole Bridge Pub, for the 3/13 SJvPOR match since it's televised and both clubs have a fanbase in Reno. On a side note, I was also sent an email regarding smoke bomb rules. Call me out if this is cheesy af, but what about setting them off in a small mine cart replica... OOO or a steam locomotive with the smoke coming out the stack, since the Silver Rush pretty much coincided with the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad
Why not do this? https://twitter.com/APyramid_Blog Scroll down to the second tweet from the top. Can't get it to link directly to the video
Yes! Now we just need Union Pacific to divert the tracks in front of the supporters section. They might have to move the 3rd base line
So is there any discussion going on about the crest and colors? Have the supporters group settled on the name Battle Borne Battalion yet? ? What will the supporters crest look like? The bad thing about these longer launches is the time between news releases. It has to be hard to keep public interest up when the team doesn't play until 2017. Now is the time for a marketing blitz with maybe a leak here and there to tease the fan base a bit. Just my oppinion
Battle Born Brigade / Batallion or The Donner Party - now THAT is intimidating! Opening weekend in Portland the fans made a banner that referenced an old punk band from Reno: Make a chant out of this If the kids < clap clap > are united they will never be divided Since Vegas doesn't have a team you could use something from the Killers, they definitely have Nevada pride...
What? If you mean Sacramento, no it's not. It was right near Truckee and the CA/NV border, so just after Reno: People in Truckee and the general Tahoe area are definitely more likely to attend a sporting event in Reno than way down in Sacramento, so it is well within Reno's "sphere of influence"... And that's what would make it so intimidating, given that Sacramento will be their closest rivals in USL, the threat of Republic fans not making it home across the mountains safely!
I do not, your profile doesn't say. In that case, I repeat: People in Truckee and the general Tahoe area are definitely more likely to attend a sporting event in Reno than way down in Sacramento, so it is well within Reno's "sphere of influence"... Truckee has to be like six times closer to Reno than Sacramento
Reno has its own distinct identity. This team should be part of that distinct identity. Indeed, that's crucial here because Reno is in so many ways retelling its story and reclaiming its identity apart from gambling. Latching onto an event that happened in an entirely different town in an entirely different state does not accomplish that goal. Reno has a rich history and culture all its own. The Donner Party really isn't part of that story. Further, 1868 tested whether to include Tahoe in the team's name. It was overwhelmingly rejected. This team is about Reno. Period. Full stop. Let Reno tell its own story through this new team.
May a supporters group of people from the California/Tahoe region that support Reno could call themselves that ... similar to the Omaha supporters group for SKC and the like! You can have many supporters group with regional names from areas outside of your metropolitan area.
Perhaps that's what I'll call myself. And if people want to come over to watch games with me, maybe they'd also like to stay for dinner. I'll be sure to have fava beans and a nice chianti on hand just in case ...
Man, I'm bummed yesterday was such a crazy day for me. There's a lot of chatter going on in here! From what I can gather they will start a big marketing campaign in the spring, so probably some time next month.
What are your thoughts on Spanish chants? It makes sense in certain markets and Reno has a pretty large Hispanic demographic.
I've stayed out of the supporters club business, because I'm not in Reno proper, I'm not going to get down there for every single game, and my allegiance is a little weird since I'm two-timing with SRFC until MLS allows them into the league. I also loathe Facebook, and all this discussion seems to take place there. But I'm going to chime in here about Spanish chants. Of course you want Spanish language chants! That's an absolute no-brainer. It's not just about including the Spanish speaking soccer fans. It's about incorporating the awesome Central and South American soccer supporters cultures in Reno's burgeoning soccer culture. Look at DC United. They're the model here. The Barra Brava and La Norte are great supporters. They bring a wonderful Latin American flavor to RFK. The drums. The traditional Spanish language chants. The energy. Those guys are great. Do you want supporters like that in Reno? HELL YES YOU DO!
This is a really good point. I've heard people (Eurosnobs, typically) bitch about American SGs chanting in Spanish, basically calling it "dishonest". Which is a ridiculous leap in logic. I have a couple Spanish chants lined out because i thought they would sound great. ACB has a large Hispanic contingency so I'm used to chanting in Spanish, even though I can barely put a sentence together on my own!
The watch party / group meeting went really well! There were about 20 people in an already crowded pub (there was a St. Paddy's Day run today). There were a lot of new faces to meet and plenty of those people were passionate and contributing towards ideas. We decided to put up a final poll for the SG name since most are leaning towards Battle Born Brigade, that'll be posted shortly. There was a bit of chanting going on during the match so the group is definitely vocal. They liked a lot of the chants that I brought up and likely there will be a Google Docs chant sheet up soon that people can add notes to. And everybody is on board for having a large presence at the SLCvsSac match in June. The new Virginia Street bridge will be done by then so we'll have a clear patch for a Match to the Match from Ole Bridge Pub to the stadium. Everybody is incredibly excited for what we have to look forward to!
A poll got put out on the FB group. Simple "Yes/No" on whether to name ourselves the Battle Born Brigade. Right now the Yes's are winning 32-2.

Yup, really looking forward to this one. Sacramento is bringing ~700 people, SLC ~75-100. We're going to bring numbers as well, if only to do a dry run and get our presence out there. Plus hey, it's live soccer.
Two updates: Aces Ballpark is now Greater Nevada Field (sponsorship deal with Greater Nevada Credit Union). And they put up a sick mural at the front gate breezeway. This is Theodore Judah, the chief engineer responsible for connecting the first Transcontinental Railroad through the Sierras. The task was thought to be impossible and he was sometimes called "Crazy Judah" in the 1850's before the plan was put to task. Mt. Judah in Soda Springs is named after him (and the tunnel going through it is called 1868 CPRR). I'm so happy the FO is on the same page as those of us who really want to embrace our history. It's tough to see in the photo but the metallic gold and silver paint make it so the contrast and lighting changes from different perspectives and different ambient light. In lower light you almost can't see the train coming at you until you hit the right angle. It's also impressive that it's all spray paint.
