http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/...and-colors-lafc-hard-work-stadium-and-academy They talk about possibly starting an LAFC 2 in USL before the MLS team starts play at the end of this article
Says the same thing here -- LAFC could start up a new USL team even before entering MLS. http://www.thegoatparade.com/2016/1...d-possibly-start-usl-team-before-entering-mls
Pretty credible. Been chatting with Keaton for a week or so, team might even be announced in the next month. An interesting side note from Robbins. Detroit City FC, AFC Cleveland, and FC Buffalo are all interested in trying to 'go up' together and make the Rust Belt Derby the East Coast version of Cascadia. DCFC would prefer NASL but isn't wedded to the idea, and FCB sees USL as a far more realistic target. USL needs some more East/Midwest teams to balance all the West Coast teams coming on, so this would make a lot of sense. And it puts them in some pretty interesting markets.
Along with Buffalo vs Rochester & Toronto ... Cleveland vs Pittsburgh ... very interesting group! I think the next area would be the Chicago (Fire 2?), Milwaukee, Minnesota (MNU 2) area ... with the long shot of adding Des Moines into that group as well.
i really dont see buffalo or syracuse getting a team. both cities are an hour from rochester, so id consider them in rochester's soccer market. it would only make sense that all these cities support rochester for pro soccer because rochester-buffalo-cuse support the bills for football and the orange for basketball
nwsl team wny flash operate in the buffalo burbs but go to rochester to play...and might move their offices to rochester... if the stadium gets the big upgrade thats needed and been talked about i see that happening
Very cool. Hopefully just a prelude to an MLS attempt. Someone get them in touch with John Moores if they're not already. Not likely. A USL crowd would be swallowed whole in Qualcomm. But they could play at USD's Torero Stadium short term, should USD be amenable. And long term hopefully MLS would be their goal along with SDSU football at a new stadium in Mission Valley. And the smaller stadium could work better for USL too (being planned somewhere in the 30k range) compared to the current 70k Qualcomm Stadium. Unless they have their own plans.
Silverbacks aren’t done as a soccer franchise While the Atlanta Silverbacks no longer exist as an NASL franchise, the Atlanta Silverbacks playing in another league is likely. Boris Jerkunica, who owns the Silverbacks name, said he and partners John Latham and John Hardin are considering starting a men’s team in the United Soccer League or continuing the team that is in National Premier Soccer League. Its roster is currently composed of reserves players on the Silverbacks team (the reserves would be dropped from the NPSL team’s name). There are also ongoing discussions about starting a women’s team in the Women’s Premier Soccer League.
Yeah, I wouldn't put a lot of stock into the Silverbacks joining the USL . In the article Jerkunica seems uninformed and uneducated about the league they most likely will stay in the NPSL
Confirmed: FC Buffalo working on getting investors for a move up to USL or NASL. http://midfieldpress.com/2016/02/11/fc-buffalo-looking-to-move-up-to-the-pros/
my guess is that NASL would be their goal because they are considered in Rochester's USL market. Buffalo is only an hour from rochester
I think the rule is 90 miles but I remember Syracuse got a exemption (did they pay Rochester some money?) Buffalo is a little closer to Rochester than Syracuse but I would think that Rochester would welcome another close rivial
cuse got an exception? what does that mean? I dont think they are getting a professional outdoor team. i do think/know the cuse silverknights (indoor professional) are putting together a NPSL side, but in recent news the Rochester Rhinos have a new agreement with the Syracuse Development Academy (the best youth club in cuse) http://www.syracusedevelopmentacade...-affiliate-with-syracuse-development-academy/
Ive always said/thought that if Rochester/buffalo/syracuse cities can support the Rochester Rhinos, like the 3 cities support the buffalo bills and syracuse basketball, this market can not only be big enough for mls but really help mls. the buffalo metro/rochester metro/cuse metro is about 3 million people 3 mls team in California, two in LA and one in NorCal. NY could be the same 2 in NYC and 1 upstate/WNY
That doesn't make any sense because it's only 80 miles between Oklahoma City and Tulsa and you can't tell me that there is 90 miles between Orange County and Carson California. It's only 100 miles between Louisville and Cincinnati. If there is distance requirement they are going to miss out on some prime locations to put clubs as well as some terrific rivalries. The population of Syracuse is almost 200,000 but its much more if you extend it north to th Canadian border because you would pick up towns like Watertown,Black River, the Army Base. You would even pick up thousand Islands. It would not have any effect on Rochester's territory. The population of Buffalo proper is about 300,000 it has alright with the other sports teams it has (exception: maybe the Bills). The triple A baseball teams in Rochester,Syracuse, and Buffalo have proven that the 3 cities have proven that they can have teams coexist within the same league and be successful. Honestly you guys should do a little research and you will see that I'm right
Albany is actually a bigger metro area than Syracuse. Albany is 880k and Syracuse is 660k. Buffalo and Rochester are 1-1.1m a piece.
It wouldnt be a rivalry anytime soon. People in this area support buffalo teams (bills, sabres) so putting a soccer team in buffalo wouldnt strike up a rivalry like one would think because of the distance. If you wear bills gear in rochester and youll be greated with "lets go buffalo". its just my opinion but i feel like the two teams would be fighting for the same fans. the bills advertise in rochester and it looks like the rhinos will do the same with buffalo and syracuse. David Dworkin the new owner keeps saying the Rochester Rhinos will be Western New York's team and venue and the news above shows a quick step to do so. Look at NWSL we have the WNY Flash. again, just all my opinion on the subject.
