If you add total people of Central America, in 6 countries (excluding Belize)you have 40 millions of people. Generate a big football league with teams of all countries, probably create a better competition for all of central american teams.

First Level - Central American League
    - 18 teams, 2 rounds, 34 matchdays.
    - Starts the first year with the best 3 teams by country.
    - Best teams qualify to CONCACAF Champions League.
    - Worst 3 teams relegated to Second Level.

    Second Level - National Leagues
    - 6 groups of 10 teams, every country have their own group (national league).
    - Every group plays 4 rounds and 36 matchdays.
    - Playoffs like Mexican style between the best 16 teams (6 first places of every group, 6 second places and 4 third places).
    - Best 3 teams promoted to First Level.
    - The number of teams relegated to third level depending on the criteria of keeping 10 teams on every group.

    Third Level
    - Every country design their own league system.

I guess that not many people liked this idea.

Not only the 40 million people in C.A. but how many million living in the USA, Over here all they can watch on TV is Mexican or MLS football (European also). A Central America (why exclude Belize?) league could sell some of its games to Telefutura or something here in the USA that would create good revenue (ask the FMF).

I guess the biggest opposition would come from the biggest leagues (Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala) But if the other 4 got toghether and asked concacaf for permition why not?

How are the communication links (roads, trains, airlines) between C.A. countries?

How expensive would it be for a team to travel from Panama to Belize?

Would the Federations have the money to get this started? they would probably lose money for a few years.

I have always wandered why this does not happen.

By American or even Mexican standards, not too good. Also there´s a level of animosity between several Central American nations (you rarely if ever find any Costa Ricans playing in Nicaragua´s league and vice versa.) Cooperation would be difficult.

I guess that coming up with a foreigner rule (like the 5 foreigner rule in Mexico) would be difficult in this theoretical league, do you allow teams no limit on any Central American player or do Guatemalan teams limit the number of other central American nationals for example.

Under the current apertura/clausura format of the central american leagues they could simply make one of them a central american tournament. It could be a domestic apertura with a central american clausura. Just an idea but that way they could keep their domestic leagues.

As for the idea itself it certainly has potential. A united central american league would be able to tap into the wealth of sponsorship and TV revenue in the United States in a way the individual domestic leagues can't do. They could even sell the naming rights to the league.

I don't see this ever happening for a million reasons, not the least of them being it doesn't make any sense.

It doesn't matter if the combined population of central america is 40, 400 or 4000 million people, the fact remains that they are different countries, with different levels of infrastructure, development, etc. There is absolutely no reason to clump them all into a single entity.

At the most what I could see happening is a fake money grab tournament like superliga.

I've always thought that something like this should happen. i also think it should happen for the Caribbean, they already have a tournament to decide who goes into the CCL. a Central american super league would rival Mexico and the MLS.

First of all Belize and Nicaragua will spread their teams to the closest countries because they suck. the 6 winners will make it through. there will be a random draw to determine the match-ups. they will play a Home/Home series and the 3 winners will get promoted. i would reduce the number of teams in the league to 16. they will play 30 games. then the top eight teams in the league will go to a play off. each championship, the regular season and playoff, will be considered even. this way the aptura and clasura would be combined.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_League_(football)

I ran into this link on another thread, UEFA did not approve.

It was (is) a plan for the smaller north Atlantic leagues to form a united league to better compete (TV money) with the big 5 Euro leagues.

Yes I know this is pie in the sky type of idea.

The way I would see it for Central America

    First year

Top 2 teams per country (include Belize)

So 14 teams double round robin = 26 games + playoff.

    Second year.

The 7 champions (best record, playoff between apertura/clausura champions, what ever) of each federation and the worst team in the "superliga" get drawn (random, by Concacaf ranking, whatever) into 2 groups of 4.

Best 2 in the group move to the "superliga" the 2 3rd place teams face each other for the right to play in the "superliga"

Second season 18 teams = 34 games plus liguilla.

    Third Year

Bottom two teams of the “superliga” automatically relegated to their respective national league.

3rd worst team joins the 7 National Champions/representatives for a 2 group promotional tournament, group winner’s advance to the “superliga”, second place teams play an extra game against each other winner goes to the “superliga”.

And so on for the following years.

I don't like this idea at all. It would make some of the more established clubs richer but there is no guarantee it would improve the level of play and it would definitely be the end for the smaller clubs in Central America. Relegation is a death sentence for a lot of the smaller clubs making one league would be the equivalent of relegating them all at once which would leave most countries football in worse shape then they are now.

It is better to have 10-12 poor teams providing an opportunity for Central American players to play then 2 per country even if they have slightly bigger budgets.

What might be interesting now that CONCACAF is desperately trying to turn the CCL into a new version of the superliga is to have a return of the Central American cup championship. Since it is unlikely we will see many Central American teams face each other in the CCL until CONCACAF decides to change the format again that would probably be the only place for Central American clubs to face each other in meaningful games from now on. More importantly it wouldn't kill off the smaller clubs in the process.

This is true, my idea benefits the big clubs and screws the little clubs.

Yeah I don't like this nor I think It'll ever be possible. Granted I always wanted a sort of "europa league" of sorts involving central american clubs. But the Main obstacle is money and to a lesser extent infrastructure. Until our clubs are capable of generating enough money ( hard to do when people lack identity n rather watch other leagues) or concacaf decides to invest some of the money it generates from the money maker gold cups , I don't think we will see a central american cup :'(

To be fair the "big 3" of each league (well not nicaragua and Belize) Probably generate good revenue for a top league, but not for the 2nd and 3rd divisions as the article wants.

The rich clubs would be ok, but the poor clubs would lose out.

The deal breaker in my opinion is that the article seems to imply this superliga centroamerica would take the place of the current tournaments in each country. There is no way in hell that happens.

I agree ....I was in no way endorsing the type of competition in that article. It is not only unfeasible but just plain unattractive. Now on the other hand, a copa uncaf de clubs could be a great thing, especially how the financial/talent/infrastructure gap between the mexico/ usa and central american clubs keeps getting wider wider, making extremely difficult to compete in the CCL. For example in the Guate league there at least 4 to 5 clubs that would able to compete in it .

If it was up to me it would be 16 team competition, 4 groups. And the spots would be distributed like this

    Costa rica 3 1/2
    Guatemala 3 1/2
    Honduras 3 1/2
    El Salvador 2 1/2
    Nicaragua 1
    Panama 1 1/2
    Belize 1/2

They could change depending on performance. Although if it ever happens, I don't think it'll be in the near future sadly.

Not if one league is played in the first semester and the other in the second semester.

Rugby works like that in the Southern Hemisphere.

We really need this to improve our football. This would attract more high profile players and attention from the region.
