There are only 18 USL teams eligible: Charleston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Harrisburg, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Richmond, Rochester, Wilmington, Arizona, Colorado Springs, Oklahoma City, Orange County, RGVFC, Sacramento, Saint Louis, San Antonio, Tulsa Puerto Rican teams usually do not participate in the Open Cup since they are sanctioned by the Puerto Rican Football Federation. Their teams participate in the CFU Club Championship.
Ah, got it. I did the drop-down of Clubs listing from the header, and saw 30 teams. I then just tossed out the 3 Canadian and 8 owned teams. So Austin is still on that list, but not playing this season. so pulling out the spreadsheet again: roundnewinfocarry overmatches 124of 36 amateur12 230USL (18), amateur (12)1221 39NASL (9)2115 417MLS (17)1516 80total or roundnewinfocarry overmatches 122of 35 amateur11 231USL (18), amateur (13)1121 39NASL (9)2115 417MLS (17)1516 79total
Hey, I called it! At least eliminating the final round of the qualifying tournament. http://thecup.us/2016/02/03/final-r...eled-remaining-14-amateur-teams-punch-ticket/ Now we'll have to wait and see if I correctly predicted the format but I like my chances.
Hmmm. My old guess won't work since things have changed in the USL and NASL. 42 amateur teams 18 USL teams 9 NASL teams 17 MLS teams So I will predict, Give 6 amateur teams a bye into the 2nd round and you get this, Round 1: 36 amateur teams, 18 games Round 2: 18 winners plus 6 amateur and 18 USL teams, 21 games Round 3: 21 winners plus 9 NASL teams, 15 games Round 4: 15 winners plus 17 MLS teams, 16 games And I wind up pretty similar to what SJJ has but with the higher number of amateur teams. Still has the same number of games from Round 2 onward.
Here is the format and list of qualified teams http://www.uslsoccer.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=32800&ATCLID=210689632
Hmmm. I thought there were 42 amateur teams but there are 48? Round 1: 48 amateur teams, 24 games Round 2: 24 winners and 18 USL teams, 21 games Round 3: 21 winners plus 9 NASL teams, 15 games Round 4: 15 winners plus 17 MLS teams, 16 games
Yep, they have increased the number of teams even beyond the extra 6 from the qualifying tournament. Last fall they said: Originally, PDL - 15 teams NPSL - 13 teams Tournament - 8 teams Now there are, PDL - 19 teams NPSL - 15 teams Tournament - 14 teams
Qualified via 2015 NPSL playoffs: AFC Cleveland (Ohio) CD Aguiluchos USA (Calif.) Chattanooga FC* (Tenn.) Clarkstown SC Eagles (N.Y.) Indiana Fire Myrtle Beach Mutiny (S.C.) Sacramento Gold (Calif.) At-Large Berths previously awarded: Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves FC Wichita (Kan.) Fredericksburg FC (Va.) Miami Fusion FC; At-Large Berths newly awarded: Chesterfield United FC (Va.) Corinthians FC of San Antonio (Texas) Detroit City FC* Kraze United (Florida). Cosmos B and New York Athletic Club, previously awarded places in the 2016 competition, have withdrawn.
That's 92 clubs, which I'm assuming is the most that have ever been in a U.S. Open Cup, and the same amount that are in the English Capital One Cup.
So have we just come to the point where the number of amateur (Open) teams are calculated after all of the Pro teams are known? A - number of Division I teams [or "enter in fourth round"] B - number of Division II teams [or "enter in third round"] C - number of Division III teams [or "enter in second round"] D - number of Open teams [or "enter in first round"] teams in first round: D teams in second round: C + (D/2) teams in third round: B + (C + (D/2))/2 teams in fourth round: A + (B + (C + (D/2))/2)/2 so A + (B + (C + (D/2))/2)/2 = 32 or solving for D: (B + (C + (D/2))/2)/2 = 32 - A B + (C + (D/2))/2 = 2 * (32 - A) (C + (D/2))/2 = 2 * (32 - A) - B C + (D/2) = 2 * (2 * (32 - A) - B) D/2 = 2 * (2 * (32 - A) - B) - C D = 2 * (2 * (2 * (32 - A) - B) - C) so D = 2 * (2 * (2 * (32 - 17) - 9) - 18) D = 48
Your math is fine, but rather than work with so many parenthesis and fractions, I multiplied both sides by 8 to get: 8A + 4B + 2C + D = 256 Then I substitituted in A, B, and C to get: 136 + 36 + 36 + D = 256 208 + D = 256 D = 48

RGVFC is out. So now we have this: Round 1: 48 amateur teams, 24 games Round 2: 24 winners and 17 USL teams, ? games Round 3: 21 winners plus 9 NASL teams, 15 games Round 4: 15 winners plus 17 MLS teams, 16 games I guess someone gets a bye in the 2nd Round.
the link which confirms: http://www.sounderatheart.com/2016/...-granted-bye-into-second-round-of-us-open-cup
I hate when clubs play in one round and then get a bye in the next round. I like giving two clubs a bye in Round 1 better than one club getting a bye in Round 2.
Yeah, now that I think about it and see what the USSF did it makes sense. Round 1: 46 amateur teams, 23 games Round 2: 23 winners plus 2 amateur teams and 17 USL teams, 21 games Round 3: 21 winners plus 9 NASL teams, 15 games Round 4: 15 winners plus 17 MLS teams, 16 games

Qualifying is now done pretty much by the standings in the PDL and NPSL or through the amateur tournament run by the USSF. The PDL season hasn't started yet. The NPSL has started in some regions but none of the regions will finish until later in the summer. The USSF amateur qualifying tournament will start in the fall.

Seems to me that PDL didn't have as good of a year this year as they have in the past. Bucks out early, that's the biggest loss for PDL...in my opinion. @kenntomasch you have any first-round stats? I always look forward to your feedback on this.
The PDL went 9-9 in the first round this year compared to 11-8 last year and 2-3 back in 2014. Not a huge difference.
