Yes, I can see the logic in everything you say. And there must be some correlation between cause and effect (even if there will be some coincidences too). As you say, it's a good indicator of how important a player is for a particular team I would think. But I doubt they really conclude that Muller must be the best player ever, based on the results.
@PDG1978 Yes, I can second that. The case of T. Müller is explained in one of the links (incl. all the points that are mentioned such as strength of teams at start of his career and him not playing at crucial stages of tournaments). The author of the website also notes and elaborates that there's dearth of players with high values between the start of 1987 and end of 2007 (among other eras). One thing I'd point out, which is also in the links, is that the author makes the argument (his opinion) that an approach like he does (VORP and win shares are similar in intent) tells more as 'key passes', 'assists', 'pass accuracy'.
Nice vids!! Around that time, Higuita was in his peak, after that goal in WC'90 he decreased in his level. Oh! I'm really surprising how many good long balls Baresi did vs Colombians
1 Pele 1570 2 Diego Maradona 1527 3 Johan Cruyff 1510 4 Alfredo Di Stefano 1444 5 Franz Beckenbauer 1443 6 Ferenc Puskas 1387 7 Michel Platini 1341 8 Garrincha 1270 9 Ronaldo 1212 10 Zinedine Zidane 1204 11 Eusebio 1171 12 Zico 1159 13 George Best 1095 14 Gerd Muller 1088 15 Bobby Charlton 1043 16 Marco van Basten 996 17 Lothar Matthaus 863 18 Paolo Maldini 849 19 Lionel Messi 797 20 Lev Yashin 787 21 Romario 745 22 Franco Baresi 699 23 Ruud Gullit 659 24 Roberto Baggio 637 25 Bobby Moore 608 This seems to be the top 25 we ended up with then, so I think I might do one more video for a Big Soccer top 25 using between 2 and 4 clips I'd used on the other videos for each player, but also between 2 and 4 that I hadn't. Maybe 4 clips in total for places 13-25, and 6 clips for the top 12. As stvc has said, maybe the overall standings devalue Messi compared to if we started again for example, but it'll just be a video to reflect the votes we had since 2009 and mainly for entertainment.
I forgot Higuita had received some (16) points in the voting too btw - I'm sure Puck posted those videos for Van Basten's play, but there is another link too in that case then.
I've got that video done now so that can be a conclusion to the voting (the complete standings being 2 or 3 pages back, where I've copied the top 25 standings from). Thanks for all the votes since 2009 - I guess any new ones should go on stvc's thread or a new one now. I didn't note the points or standings in the video in the end, but the players are in reverse order and are listed in the description from 1 to 25 too:
@PDG1978 Didn't know where to post it but we talked about it on PM (e.g. euro84 players and their (possible/likely) boyhood idols; Tigana playing with #14 etc.) and I'll post it in a thread so it's there to see. Being a 'fan', 'copying' elements, and thinking someone is 'the best' is ofc not exactly the same, but anyway. Just found this fortuitously : Geoff Hurst's 50 Greatest Footballers of all-time. https://books.google.fr/books?id=qr...gXU#v=onepage&q=lev yashin look alike&f=false
I think he's done the opposite to what Pele did with the FIFA 100 too, regarding some team-mates. Martin Peters must be happy with his placing I reckon (although he makes a fair point about his scoring record)! But you should maybe just enjoy Cristiano Ronaldo's placing mate. To be honest (although I can't keep posting every sudden adjustment to my ranking lol) I have him up at least in 36th now too! And I also have the same top 3 as Geoff so that either gives credibility or takes it away from his top 10! btw you might be able to help re: Figo on the best season before moving to a major club thread?
Because the preview is limited I wasn't sure which Luis Suarez that would be. I'm thinking he means the old Barcelona/Inter Milan player though.
I did think his overall list looked a bit like a case of being a reflection of his playing career plus watching live Premier League era football (to be fair maybe my own attempts might appear to be influenced by the latter!) but the write-up on Maldini for example looked quite insightful and contained memories of details about his game. It's probably an interesting read anyway.
http://forums.bigsoccer.com/threads...on-before-an-elite-team-transfer-new.2026016/ The Figo question relates to what I posted earlier today (should be on page 2 I think).
Ok, thanks I did wonder because there were a few recent players who've starred in the PL but I think the sight of Masopust's name around the same area of his list probably swayed me to think that way. Did you see the whole thing then? Any particularly good write-ups for any player, with rare info or an insightful take on playing qualities?
That's the second time in a week I've incorrectly assumed a player listed somewhere was an Inter Milan 1960's player* instead of a namesake, and I don't even like Catennacio lol - although I do think that Inter Milan side had plenty of quality and I've seen they scored some nice goals and didn't always play for 1-0's - maybe they are slightly equivalent to George Graham's Arsenal! *(Jair being drafted by Excape Goat in the current Sheep Draft too).
I saw it in a book shop somewhere. To be honest, and I don't like to be too negative, it wasn't great. Seemed like something rushed out, using Hurst's name which didn't really add a lot. There's one for cricket as well that was "written" by David Gower as well.
Yeah, like I say the scope of Hurst's selection did seem slightly narrow in a way to me looking at the list (arguably that means he is selecting players he does know very well though from his time and from more recent TV viewing and to his credit he did explain that even British players from too many years before his career began were not to be considered). It's probably an ok read, for people who don't spend so much time as us on Big Soccer anyway (or reading more detailed football history books)! I was also trying not to be too negative (not that I would imagine he reads Big Soccer!) especially after noting down a possible 1970 World Cup British XI without him in it yesterday (I actually feel like he was probably a better player in 1966 but maybe that's based on what happened in the World Cups more than anything - I guess his best form for West Ham came somewhere in the 4 years in between although he's not a player I've looked into that much and I think you feel too that he'd generally be a player that wouldn't tend to feature in the voting in a thread like this, unlike perhaps team-mate Greaves, but possibly in purely a World Cup version he'd make more sense). He scored the most famous and most treasured goals in England's history I suppose though, and his name is bound to get recalled through the ages because of that....and it probably won't hurt his sales for the book!
I understood the reference to ghost writing there btw, even if my post didn't recognise it (I guess he had input into a few things that were written and the choices that were made).
I remember I was fairly impressed by Martin Peters' heading prowess when I watched a couple of Tottenham games in the UEFA Cup in the early-/mid-1970s recently ... he was quite a force with his head!
