Dash replace Cross with LaPonte: http://keepernotes.com/2015/08/07/houston-dash-sign-jen-laponte-to-roster/
Riley says Van Hollebeke is healthy. "Rachel's got a big announcement coming," Riley can't say what, but it's why she didn't play. #NWSL— Jeff Kassouf (@JeffKassouf) August 23, 2015
True but that does explain how that prevents a "healthy" Buehler from playing if she is on the bench.
It's official- Van Hollebeke to retire and go to medical school. Her open letter to the fans: http://www.timbers.com/post/2015/08/25/letter-thorns-fc-defender-rachel-van-hollebeke I've never been the biggest fan of hers, but she has had a great career and I wish her nothing but the best going forward.
Med school = UCSD. Will see if she can participate in any more Thorns games, depending on schedule and med school demands (haha... of course she did do pre-med at Stanford, so maybe she has enough brain power to pull off an extracurricular like pro soccer).
Should be interesting to see what the Thorns do. Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015 Roster Freeze Date Keep a very good CB who costs you $0 (or the cost of a R/T ticket from San Diego), but who can't practice or be counted on as available (and probably won't be available for a midweek NWSL final match). Or get a cheap replacement before the roster freeze date.
I had missed that happening, so it's good to document things. I wondered when this was going to happen. A useful tool for attracting some of the best players in the world. Red Stars sign reserve Mary Luba to squad: http://chicagoredstars.com/luba-to-join-red-stars-for-remainder-of-season/
Interesting timing. It's great for her to get the call up, but there's not much time left do anything with it.
Before we lock this thread, can someone help me compile a list of all international players to have been on a gameday roster this season? I notice that Huerta and Roche haven't been added to the NWSL Foreign Players wiki article yet, and I wanted to have a complete list before I started editing. =edit= Huerta, Roche, Kur, Waldus, Sanderson...
Boston: Ketlen, Rafinha, Bia, Kyah Simon Chicago: Abby Erceg, Adriana Leon, Karina LeBlanc, Melissa Tancredi Houston: Rachael Axon, Stephanie Roche, Camila, Andressa, Ellie Brush, Erin McLeod, Allysha Chapman KC: None (first team to win a pro championship in the US without a single international on its roster) Portland: Ayo Anonma, Stephanie Catley, Kaylyn Kyle, Clare Polkinghorne, Lianne Sanderson, Christine Sinclair, Jodie Taylor, Rhian Wilkinson Seattle: Rachel Corsie, Jess Fishlock, Kim Little, Katrine Veje SkyBlue: Jonelle Filigno, Caitlin Foord, Sam Kerr, Nadia Nadim, Maruschka Waldus Washington: Estefania Banini, Josephine Chukwunonye, Laura Del Rio, Diana Matheson, Ngozi Okobi, Fran Ordega, Hayley Raso WNY: Lady Andrade, Halimatu Ayinde, Sabrina D'Angelo, Michelle Heyman, Camilla Kur, Ajara Nchout I know I'm probably missing one or two, but this is my list of internationals that were on rosters this year. And players like Huerta don't count, since technically they're not internationals.
Thanks! Huerta counts for the qualifications on the Foreign Players page since she has dual citizenship and has been capped by Mexico - just friendlies, but still capped. I mean, Fishlock now has a green card and won't count as an international, but she's definitely still a "foreign" player. It's a bit more of a stretch for Huerta, but you have to define "foreign" somehow and she fits the definition of "foreign" used.
I'd agree there. A player born and raised in the US that went to US college shouldn't be considered foreign just because they have caps for a different NT. Especially when they are not cap tied to that different NT. And that's something very different. A green card just means that you have permanent residence and a right to work. It is not citizenship. What exactly is that definition? From what I can tell from what's been stated so far, Sydney Leroux should be considered foreign because she played for the Canadian YNT. Perhaps it's the term "foreign" that is the problem and that should be reconsidered to instead be something like "Non USWNT eligible players"... though then Huerta would still not be on the list.
I never said it was - my point was to state that counting as an "international player" by NWSL roster rules shouldn't be the same as being a "foreign player" in the "general knowledge" definition Wiki uses. The definition the page uses is: have been on the roster for the NWSL club(s) listed, not counting preseason. have not been capped by the U.S. national team on any level/have been capped by a team other than the U.S. national team. were born outside the U.S./have citizenship outside the U.S. Leroux does not qualify for either option of the second bullet point. (She was never capped by the senior CanWNT.) Huerta, OTOH, was capped by the senior MexWNT. I'm not saying I agree with the definition the page uses, but that's where it stands. FWIW, most everything under Category:Lists of expatriate association football players allows for players born in the country of the applicable league but are capped for other NTs. (And "foreign" is the word almost all of the lists use.)
The 2nd bullet point doesn't say "have been capped by a team other than the U.S. national team at the senior level"... So therefore Leroux would qualify. Like I said in response to BlueCrimson, it's one thing if a US born player is cap tied to a foreign national team. It's another when that player is not, even if there have been caps at the senior level. Perhaps maybe as a compromise, you could list Huerta with an asterisk saying that she is still eligible for the USWNT?
True, but considering the first half of the bullet goes out of its way to include all levels while the second half doesn't, I think it's implied senior team for the second half. Again, if you go to any of the other "foreign players" articles, they do state "any level" for the league's national teams, but don't specify for other NTs. You rarely talk about youth teams unless you need to - that's true of any soccer discussion.
I don't think it's so simple to say it's specifically one or the other. It could be argued that it's a continuation of the same context from the first half of the statement since no effort was made to distinguish it in the 2nd half. It's not like adding the clarification "at the senior level" to the sentence is so unwieldy, if that was the intention. (And I'm not saying any of this is your fault, I'm saying maybe they need to come up with a better definition throughout Wikipedia)
