As of this morning it was reported that there are still negotiations between the Reno Aces owner and USL.

    http://www.rgj.com/story/news/2015/...ing-bring-pro-soccer-franchise-reno/30768365/

I plan on starting a group on Facebook or something of the sort. Essentially want to have a way to garner interest and get an idea on how many people are in on this.

    Team name ideas
    - Silver State FC/SC
    - Battle Born Reno
    - Reno Sheriffs
    - Great Basin FC/SC

    Supporter Group name ideas
    - Battle Born Battalion/Brigade
    - Silver State Supporters
    - Biggest Little Supporter Club (hot damn that's cheesy)

    Color ideas
    - Blue and silver, maybe with slight accents of gold/yellow

I'm pretty sure that the USL requires the city to be in the name. It's why Charlotte didn't go with Queen City.

Really now... well that's a bummer. I feel like that stifles creativity.

Battle Born Reno it is, then.

I am not sure that is accurate....most new teams do have the city name, but not all. For example, Real Monarchs SLC (I know SLC stands for the city, but Salt Lake City it is not actually in the name) and Whitecaps FC 2. There are also several with state or region names rather than city, FWIW. So the question is, is it a requirement or just a coincidence? I really don't know, I just thought it was worth noting the above...

It could be, but I remember hearing rumblings about the Charlotte franchise wanting to be called Queen City (which is the name of their holding company) but the USL shot that idea down. I don't claim to know this for fact.

For what it's worth, USLsoccer.com officially lists the Whitecaps reserve team as "Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2". As well, the LA Galaxy dropped "Los Angeles" from their official name a few years ago, and are simply known as "LA Galaxy" and the reserve team is just "LA Galaxy II" but that also jibes with the SLC portion of Real Monarchs SLC. In general, I would consider MLS reserve teams exceptions due to MLS branding efforts.

We can also point to Orange County as an example (they re-branded in 2014) of a team not using the city name so perhaps the rule is that you've got to use an official location name, not a location nickname. Rio Grande Valley SC also doesn't have the city name, so maybe "Great Basin" is considered an official enough name to run with. I just wouldn't bet that Great Basin will get much traction in the USL office and I'd assume they'd want to have Reno in the name.

I think in general it's just what make sense. Most people have grander images of Orange County as opposed to Irvine and Rio Grande Valley probably has more cache than Brownsville or McAllen by itself. I'd imagine most people across the country couldn't tell you that "Queen City" is Charlotte. As such, I don't think most would know where the Great Basin is in the US.

    Good points.

Also worth noting, the Great Basin extends from Reno to the Bonneville salt flats in western Utah, and spans half the state of Nevada. So that's a pretty huge area and not specifically referencing Reno.

As a side note, a really terrible name but one that makes me giggle would be The Reno Sparks.

The obvious colors are silver and blue, ala UNR. Whether you want to go with that or not, I'm not so sure.

    As for team names:

Reno 1868 - For the year of the city's founding.
Locomotive Reno - For the city's railroad history.

    Supporter group names:

    If Locomotive Reno, The Locos.

    --

Or you could go with Reno Divorcees, with blue and gold as the colors to represent all the wedding rings they say were thrown into the Truckee River from the bridge just up the street from the courthouse.

I like Locomotive Reno. To make it even more Reno-themed, the supporters group could be called Jameson's Station, the original name of the area before it became a city when it was just a stop on the rails on the way West.

Also, the Divorcees got me laughing. Love it

Locomotive Reno is actually pretty sweet. A nod to the countries and regions long history with railroads, and gives them a little something to start a rivalry with Colorado Springs over aside from 'proximity.' Also gives you something of a Eurocentric name, since there are lots of team names that start with 'lokomotive' in Eastern Europe, but it still sounds really American at the same time.

Wait...have you solved the riddle of giving an American soccer team both a Eurocentric and American name at the same time!?

Nope. I just ripped off Houston 1836, and the big Locomotive Houston rumor that preceded it.

That was one of the best rumors ever. There was even a very nice, quite professional looking shield backing up the locomotive name.

Also, the closest brewpub is The Depot, which used to be a train hub. Three blocks away. Perfect place to meet and start the march to the match.

    (my comments)
    Team name ideas
    - Silver State FC/SC Love it!
    - Battle Born Reno Meh
    - Reno Sheriffs Fodder for Reno 911! jokes.
    - Great Basin FC/SC Good way of being inclusive of the greater area of the state, not very inspiring though.

    Supporter Group name ideas
    - Battle Born Battalion/Brigade Too similar to your regional rivals Tower Bridge Batallion
    - Silver State Supporters Nice ring to it
    - Biggest Little Supporter Club (hot damn that's cheesy) Cheesy but just the right amount of tongue in cheek, love it.

Wasn't there a UFL or some other minor league team called the Las Vegas Locomotives? Also Locos for short? I'm pretty sure that was the case, that's what that makes me think of.. Good or bad depending how you want to look at it.

Been there, great little place.

Welcome Reno! Look forward to having another team in the region, and will have to make a road trip for a game some time.

It is also possible that Queen City was too ambiguous, with at least four major US cities using Queen City as a nickname. Although one (Seattle) has moved on and now uses Emerald City (officially) or Jet City (colloquially)

It was cool. Pretty good turnout. The name will be fan chosen, so that's fun. I don't do the tweets (actually might have to start now to help get the word out) but the most prevalent thing out there is #775United. I like it, especially since it's all of Nevada except Vegas.
