Oh yeah, playoffs are stupid. Yet another Americanism, I'm guessing.

I also hate the Apertura/Clausura stuff. One year, one champ. It's not that hard.

Someone who came close was Dario Cvitanich, but his Boca team last the Final to Corinthians. Its not a copa libertadores champ, but linking former Yugoslavia to Argetnina- there is a guy called Estaban Saveljich who plays for Defensa y Justicia- a tiny club in the south of greater buenos aires- who was called up by Montenegro last FIFA date and even marked Zlatan. He is an extremely average defender and very slow, though he is tall (1.89 m) I sometimes wish Pisculichi had played for Croatia he definitely could have made an impact.

As for Piscu making an impact on Wednday well he hasn't played much of late and is just coming back from an injury. I think he'll be on the bench, but no telling if he'll play or not. Its a shame as he was in such incredible form during the Copa Sudamericana last year, but this season he has been a different player, even his set pieces- normally his specialty- have been poor.

I read somewhere there was a handshake between both owners in that each home game wouldn't have any away fans....

It's easy to check it out. Croatian surnames mostly end on -ic or -ich (Cvitanic, Piskulic, ancestor of Diego Maradona was Kariolic, Vuletic, Spajic, Milinkovic, etc. Croats live mostly in these countries: Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, some of them live in Uruguay, Paraguay, Venezuela.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Argentine_people_of_Croatian_descent

This is really unique thing to achieve, in the same season Croatian players could win the Champions League (Ivan Rakitic) and Copa Libertadores (Leonardo Piskulic).

Juan Yustrich (Justric) is probably the oldest Argentine - Croatian footballer in South America (1909. year).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Yustrich

173 matches for Boca Juniors, really great achievement if we observe the status and the reputation of this club.

Better players from Central and South America who have Croatian roots:

    1) Diego Maradona: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diego_Maradona
    2) Ivo Basay Hatibovic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivo_Basay
    3) Dario Cvitanich: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darío_Cvitanich
    4) Jose Ivancovich: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/José_Rafael_¨Fello¨_Meza_Ivancovich

Dario Cvitanich is a typical goal scorer, not attractive in a usual sense of imagination, but he had a constant scoring period...Esteban Saveljic has Montenegrin roots, his height is also typical for ex-Yugoslavia countries, Montenegro really needs players, so they try to create something in the last five years.

I remember Pisculichi from Mallorca, at first maybe average club, but he had nice impact on the results.

Main criteria for Croatia is: if Argentina doesn't invite him, Croatia also won't. Similar case was with Daniel Bilos, in one period both countries were interested for him, but his career vanished basically.

Nice amount of players with Croatian roots from all South American countries are weak for both countries (birth country and ancestor country)...at lease 10-20 active players have really average career.

I thought that these players could make something stronger:

    Felipe Seymour Dobud: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felipe_Seymour

    Universidad de Chile, Genoa...now Cruzeiro.

    Santiago Gentiletti Selak: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santiago_Gentiletti

Gimnasia La Plata, O'Higgins, Argentinos Juniors, San Lorenzo and Lazio.

Both players played for better clubs, but pretty modest impact at the end.

Example of Peruvian - Croats: also modest impact.

    Renzo Sheput: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renzo_Sheput

    Raul Ruidiaz Misitic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raúl_Ruidíaz

    Solid active players from Chile:

    Marko Biskupovic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marko_Biskupovic

    Milovan Mirosevic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milovan_Mirošević

In Brazil it's impossible for Croats to achieve some major success. Competition is just too strong. Only hope are Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, maybe Bolivia.

These Brazilian players maybe have Croatian roots:

    Robinson Popovits (Popovic): https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robinson_Rodrigues

    Leonardo Drugovich: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonardo_Drugovich

Not exactly. Tigres refused to sell tickets to River because they claimed they were already pre-reserved by their fans, so River accepted their request to not have away fans. Ideally, though, River's plan was to have an away section in both games -- as should have happened.

This both teams coming out the tunnel at the same time crap sucks.

Nothing like the excitement of the visiting team getting jeered and then the crowd going bonkers for the home team. River's 1996 Libertadores final is still the craziest I've ever seen:

Tigres look like they will score everytime they get an attack, but for the most part River look in control. They lack something in attack though.

Mucho mas facil la fase de eliminacion directa que la de grupos.

Tigres' defense fell asleep right before halftime - River Plate smelled blood and went for it. Had the game ended 0-0 after 45, who knows? But it was not to be for Tigres.

Tigres is a very good team; its categorical victory over Internacional showed it deserved to be in the final, as it had finished 3rd overall. Yet for some reason Mexican teams continue to fall short.

A storybook season for River Plate - at least after a very shaky start. I sincerely thought River was going to fall in the group stage, and it is the height of irony that Tigres, with its victory against Juan Aurich, gave River new life. It was the better team in the round of 16 and the panadero guy, despite his criminal actions, made sure River would reach the quarterfinals... a round which Cruzeiro began with a heroic away win only to throw it in the garbage in the face of a hungry opponent. Guarani was never going to reach the final; its greatest achievement was eliminating an injury-ridden and crisis-mired Corinthians (and despite my bias against Corinthians, Corinthians had the means to defeat that team).

Part of me wanted Tigres to win as River is an Argentine side, but after what the team went through (the way it was treated on the pepper spray night was shocking in its shame), tonight's result is poetic justice. And at least CONMEBOL will send a champion to the Club World Cup. Whatever roster changes may occur between now and December, I expect River (if it reaches the final) to put up more resistance against Barcelona than San Lorenzo did against Real Madrid.

Iván Bulos, top goalscorer of Peruvian Apertura, is of Croatian descent. There are big chances that he's called up for the next NT friendlies.

I called the winner 8 months ago.... The biggest eam on the continent- and also the best- won...

River is now 4 points clear of Nacional in the all-time table of the Copa Libertadores. Don't worry boca fans @Moishe and @argentine soccer fan you guys are only 15 points behind.

PD to the boca fans- keep winning with penalties, we won't need those- either way, you just lost at home to union surrendering 4 goals so good luck...

I guess it's not too bad River won: if Arévalo Rios had lifted the title, that would have made my eyes bleed.

As a Chilean, what do you have against River, especially considering, well you know, Alexis Sanchez and Jose Marcelo Salas both made their names with us before going to Europe?

River didn't win on talent, both teams were very equal. They won it with brains and confidence. Well done, River.
