Gold Cup every two years or every four years?

I think almost everyone wants it to be every 4 years. In my opinion it should be held the Summer of the Euro.
It would make the quality of play better in both the Gold Cup and the Copa America since they would not conflict anymore and teams like Mexico and USA could send their best to both.

But it is all a pipe dream due to greed. The CONCACAF will not let that happen. They love having two tournaments for twice the revenue.

As for inviting teams I am all for it but once again I don't think that will happen either.

The only other advantage I have heard to having it every two years is that it provides the smaller teams more competitive matches and double the chance to play on a bigger stage of a continental Championship.
Now I am not saying that is the best argument in the world but it is a valid point.

The Gold Cup, Copa America, and Euros should be played simultaneously. It's unfair to clubs, and especially summer leagues like MLS, to ask players to play two tournaments in a year.

South America would probably not like that idea. Mexico and the television rights is a major part of their revenue.
They would love to keep their tournament the year after the World Cup.

Not the Gold Cup and the Copa America at the same time, seeing as the latter regularly invites CONCACAF teams (especially Mexico, CR and USA). The CONCACAF teams won't bring their A-team to Copa America if the GC is right around the corner.

Too bad. No, seriously, too bad. Players shouldn't participate in more than one tournament per summer. Mexico didn't send its best team anyway.

It's not written in stone that the CA has to have guest teams, they choose to do that. They shouldn't get to choose anymore.

And you're right, Mexico sent its B team to CA. Having a continental championship with a B team devalues the tournament.

IT would not be more than one tournament per summer if the Gold Cup is in the same year as the Euro.

I've always kind of hoped Copa America would go to a system with 2 groups of five teams. I know that creates an imbalance, where one team has to sit out the last day of matches, but whatever.

Only two teams advance out of each group to a Semi-final stage. There were a lot of complaints about how the top teams didn't need to turn it on or even care that much since 8 of 12 advanced out of the groups there. With this new system, the opening stage of the tournament is a lot more critical.

And yeah, I think the only (or at least the only major reason) to have a guest team is the Mexico TV market.

Exactly. And if you want to add in meaningful games, have a preliminary stage where you play your group home and away, and then use those same groups for the tournament itself, but those matches count double points or something. I don't know, but surely something like that is viable.

every 4 years and playing in June. A lot of players miss the pre-season with their euro teams.

Euro Cup and Copa America both take place in June-July, and a lot of their players play in Europe.

Euros are mostly in June. Gold Cup should do the same. Copa America should do the same too.

Eh, I don't mind the 2 year format. I'd just tinker with the schedule of the second one so it doesn't conflict with qualifiers and Confederations Cup so teams can send their best.

Unpopular view, but I wouldn't mind having it played the winter before tge World Cup

In the winter before the World Cup, the weather is cold in some of the USA, so that could be an opportunity to play it other countries. How about these locations?

Gold Cups one year after the World Cup such as this one remain entirely in USA and Canada
Gold Cups in the winter before the World Cup have one group in Mexico (doubleheaders in three different stadiums), one group in Central America (three doubleheaders and I don't care if they are in the same country or not as long as the travel isn't too big), and one group in the Caribbean (three doubleheaders and I don't care if they are in the same country or not as long as the travel isn't too big). Then two areas would get Quarterfinal doubleheaders and one area would get the Semifinals, Final, and Third Place game. Mexico would always play in the group they host, and since USA would be in a different group from Mexico, USA would always play in Central America or the Caribbean.

One downside to postponing a Gold Cup from Summer 2017 (or any other year one year before the World Cup) to Winter 2017-2018 is that a Winter 2017-2018 World Cup would go into the FIFA Rankings after the World Cup 2018 draw and make it harder for a CONCACAF team to be seeded. Each FIFA Rankings would continue to include two Gold Cups, but moving it to the winter before the World Cup would make the Gold Cups older and less helpful in the FIFA Rankings at World Cup draw times.

As a Canadian I don't mind the every-2-years as we don't get that many competitive games as it is, but it becomes a bit of a farce when there's a 'B' Gold Cup like in 2013

Now that every Gold Cup gets the winner to the Confederations Cup or a Confederations Cup playoff, why was 2013 a "B" Gold Cup? It was played during the Hexagonal, but the 12 team Gold Cup is guaranteed to have at least 6 (half) of the teams not be in the Hexagonal.

    A) If 2 or 3 of the major confederation tournaments were played at the same time I'd have to imagine that would take a toll on MLS, both via absences and ratings. I'm not saying that's a reason to veto the concept, just offering the thought.

    B) I'd prefer the Gold Cup be held every 4 years w/16 nations. May seem like overkill w/the smaller nations but the reason the event is every 2 years now is to make money and give those minnows more opportunities. Use more of the smaller venues and make the event regional (when in the US) to ease travel.

However, I'm all for an additional tournament to make up for the loss of one Gold Cup cycle, and that could be an invitational featuring nations from around the globe. Keep it to 8 teams, tho, and aim for quality over quantity.

    C) Not sure how well the Euro League idea will pan out but it might actually be better applied in CONCACAF given the greater imbalance in nation sizes. It might be a way to revitalize the Caribbean play and fan interest.

If the confederation tournaments were all played in the same window, then makes it easier for summer leagues like MLS to take a break.

Ideally, MLS would play through Memorial Day, the confederation tournaments / World Cup would start early June, and then MLS could pick back up by Canada/Independence Day.

After just watching the worst game ever, I stand by my opinion to move this joke of a tournament to every 4 years.
