Honestly, I think the team will be better without Abby around. She doesn't really fit in to the style of play that will be conducive to all the new players.

In the long run, I agree - as BlueCrimson pointed out, the three best games the Flash had last year were without Abby.

On an unrelated matter, it actually hurt me to read McCall Zerboni saying: " The expectation is to win, to bring the trophy to Portland."

I had the feeling when the league started up that management should think carefully about the benefits of having relatively stable rosters without players moving around a lot. I thought that from a fan perspective, guys may be fungible but gals aren't. I even thought the league should try to keep players in the areas where they played college soccer.

On the other hand, from what I've heard and from your reaction, it sounds like we're going to be happy having McCall here in PDX, and she is a lot closer to home here.

I'm thinking the Flash are going to work a lot harder to spring Lynn Williams from Pepperdine early.

And how can you not love this face?

Don't get too attached! She'll probably end up in Boston eventually. (Knowing WNY's luck, she'll be allocated to them...)

That would not be surprising in the least. Although given how we've been screwed on allocations since the league started, I don't think the organization would take that lying down.

15 days until Seattle and 35 days to the WNY Home Opener.
The start of the 2015 season is going to be a baptism by fire:
at Seattle - at Portland - Boston (home) - FCKC (home) - FCKC (away).
For the FCKC games, there will be no NT players. Those could be the games that show whether or not the "WC-proof" roster can get us to the playoffs.

I think they did this just so Mewis could be #22 again...

Now they just need to trade for Holiday and the UCLA/USWNT triumvirate will be complete.

The one part I am kind of bummed out about is losing Brooks. I was really looking forward to seeing her play for us. But I think this move opens up the door to move Edmonds up to midfield.

    :ROFLMAO: ....I bet it happens....

Well, Great Googly Moogly! What an unexpected trade.

I think that even if we only get Sydney for the games this year, it is a great trade. She is the marquee player/difference maker/game breaker the Flash did not have. This is probably the first time since UCLA she will be the focal point of the offense. No more wing play – she’ll be up top where she wants to be. Somehow I doubt she will be back in 2016, unless maybe she leads he league in scoring – then she might think of staying.

And what a great Personality to have.

Frisbie is an excellent player for every day and for the games where WNT players are gone.
I wrote the following BEFORE I read your post. Eerie.

Giving up Brooks will not be much of a problem. In my mind – looking at the 4-1-3-2 that Lines has played so far - I had already moved Brooks to the bench and put Becky Edwards in as the Dmid. That gives Becky side to side as well as up and back movement, which is good for the team. IMO, Mewis is most valuable located in the middle of the field. I would put Angeli and Edmonds on either side. Of course Lines will decide on a different Dmid than Becky and everything else, but it is fun to imagine being in the coach’s chair.

I thought they were playing a 4-3-3? That's what their starting lineups made it look like.

From watching both pre-season games, it was pretty clear to me that the formation is different from the previous years' 4-3-3, which morphed into 4-2-3-1 and 4-5-1 depending on the game and game situation. What I saw, I believe, is that the basic formation this year is 4-1-3-2, with Brooks as the Dmid, and two players designated as forwards. As in the past, one outside midfielder pushes up the wing into the attack, while the two other midfielders do what they should do.

    Jordan Angeli's blog about pre-season: http://acommonlink.blogspot.com/

........We all came into this well decorated red and yellow locker room as 20+ separate players…some of which you have played with before in some capacity, some you have only admired their play, to others you don’t know at all. In this clean space you are allowed to create something new out of all the equal parts........

My guess for 20-player roster is light on midfielders:

GK (2): Chantel Jones, Sabrina D’Angelo
D (6): Whitney Engen, Brittany Taylor, Toni Pressley, Jaelene Hinkle, India Trotter, Haley Palmer
D-M (2): Kristen Edmonds, Abby Dahlkemper
M (4): Jordan Angeli, Becky Edwards, Samantha Mewis, Amanda Frisbie
F (6): Sydney Leroux, Lynn Williams, Camilla Kur-Larsen, Ajara Nchout Njoya, Jasmyne Spencer, Kristen Hamilton

    I think:
    · Lines is holding onto Palmer and expects her to be back and ready to play. Or maybe he can't cut her or trade her (yet) because she is still injured?
    · Hamilton will be the only invited trialist that makes the team - good for her, but I think they need a midfielder more.
    · D’Angelo, the last draft pick for WNY, will be signed. (5 of 6, and the one went to France).
    · Trotter may be hurt – she had zero time in pre-season games.

    Players missing games
1 & 2: Palmer and Williams; Trotter and Edmonds may be hurt.
3: Leroux, Engen, Williams (graduation is May 2), Palmer(?)
    Games 4-10: Leroux, Engen

Crap, I forgot Chelsea Stewart. Can he keep Stewart while Palmer is on the bench injured? Maybe Trotter goes on waivers. Maybe he was just showcasing Hamilton, but plans on keeping Stewart. IMO we don't really need Hamilton as another forward. I guess we'll have to stay tuned.

Try thinking Frisbie as a central defender. Remember, she played there her senior year at U of Portland, after playing forward her first three years. For her one year there, she was named first team All American. It looks like that's where WNY needs help.

WNY's got Engen, Dahlkemper, Taylor, and Pressley that can play center-back. I'd argue they need more help at full-back, likely at right-back.

But I think the defense has the most depth out of any unit WNY has. Central midfield might be the best bet for major minutes right away.

It's not the best sign when your only right back is a natural left side player.

Still room for one more player. I guess Aaran may be watching the WC for any potential quick fixes in the midfield. Or scouring amateur player lists for available mids.

    Per your recommendation!

RE: Interview on WYSL 1040. Kristen Hamilton has a nice outgoing personality and did well negotiating the heavy accent of Joe Sirianni. She was asked, but 'wasn't positive' about when Leroux will report, if at all before Seattle. It turns out she tore her ACL and MCL last year during pre-season when she crashed into the University of Buffalo goalkeeper. She has spent the entire year rehabbing in Colorado, and just started doing soccer training at the first of this year.

She was asked about the mental part of getting into game fitness and responded that unlike many players, her ACL was damaged in a tackling situation rather than just cutting or landing after a jump. So she said it was easier for her to trust her knee in those situations compared to going into a tackle.

For those keeping score from last year: Adriana Franch - ACL, Lydia Williams - ACL, Kelsey Wys (right knee contusion); Kristen Hamilton - ACL.

And WNY now has signed another player from the 2014 draft.

So WNY can borrow Leroux for a year, and then trade her to WNY for Sarah Hagen and a first round pick.
In the long run, the Flash then get a younger/better forward than Wambach is now (in Hagen), and more first round ammo to join the current young nucleus of Mewis, Dahlkemper, Hinkle, Williams, D'Angelo, etc.
