It might be, but he is basically mocking the rumor on Twitter by saying he was unaware he'd spoken to Sheffield United.

If there's one thing we need, it's for somebody to immediately become our third-best keeper. Rimando was getting cocky there.

As I was reading the prior post, I was thinking of all the potential smart ass comments I could make. Then O Fortuna, I saw the job was already done for me.

Randolph has been in the squad for eight of Ireland's WCQs but he's never actually played outside of friendlies, so he could still switch to the US.

It should go without saying, but that doesn't mean he will or should be called up.

He hasn't played anything for the full Irish team in competition, so he can make a change. I can't confirm if he has any caps in U21 or younger UEFA competition. He doesn't show up in UEFA.com, but I'm not sure how far back they go on their records.

    The fed says:
    Darren has represented Ireland at U15, U16, U17, U18, U19, U21 and B levels.

He would probably have to file a one-time switch if he wants to make a change.

I'm obviously not saying Rimando is getting cocky. But Howard and Rimando will both be 39 in 2018. After Guzan, we don't have a lot of internationally-tested depth. If Randolph commits to the program, he could be our #2 after Guzan heading into 2018. (Hamid, Irwin and Cody Cropper still have a ways to go to show they belong on international level.)

Randolph switching to the US would be huge. We can trade them Ryan Meara in return.

I didn't read that as he wants to play for us, just he knows it's still an option, but doesn't think about it.

That would be great. He's only 27, which would generally mean he hasn't peaked yet as a keeper. If he switched, you might favor him to start in Qatar(?) in 2022 at age 35. If Birmingham get back to EPL, not hard to imagine, he could credibly compete to start in Russia in 2018.

Ireland obviously the strong favorite here, but he could contribute and is well worth pursuing.

I say call him up for the Czech Republic friendly. Introduce him to the gang, give him a nice jersey with his name on the back, and take it from there. The ol' dog and pony show.

I'm not so sure this guy is better than MLS GK's like Johnson, Hamid, MacMath, Irwin and a few others, but this guy is at least worth consideration.

Reports suggest 38-year-old goalkeeper Shay Given is on the verge of a shock recall to the Republic of Ireland squad ahead of next week's World Cup qualifier in Georgia.... The Irish Sun reports that the 125-cap veteran has agreed to return but only on the condition that he plays, which would mean Milwall's David Forde, who has made the No 1 shirt his own over the last two years, dropping to the bench.... Keiren Westwood (Sheffield Wednesday), Darren Randolph (Birmingham) and Rob Elliot (Newcastle) were included along with Forde.

    Darren Randolph, goalkeeper (Birmingham City)
    Nationality: Irish-American
Status: Ireland international with two friendly caps, the last coming in June 2013; would have to file a one-time switch to play for the US.

What's his game? Few 'keepers playing in England move around so well as Randolph, who can dominate a game with his reflexes when on fire. Being that he can also make an impact in distribution, that makes three things he has in common with Tim Howard. The difference is the Brums netminder can (at least for now, at age 27) only boast of being considered among the top backstops in the second flight.
Is Jurgen recruiting him? Not that anyone is aware of. Randolph was called up by Ireland manager Martin O'Neill early in the summer, but missed out due to injury.

When is Randolph no longer a new YA? When he's cap-tied to Ireland?
