After being the two best footballing nations in the World last year one get's knocked off on the first round while the other gets the shot at a third place but is embarrassed on the semi-finals.

    So who bounces back quicker?

I think Spain since they have a good group of young talent waiting in the wings. I'm not so sure about Brazil. However, it'd be foolish to count out a Neymar led Brazil. Despite his team having numerous flaws, he came very close to taking them to the finals. Guigs maybe you share some info with me on some of Brazil's under 23 talent? Are there more high quality defensive prospects than there are forwards/strikers?

Brazil's FA are clueless and have no plan, they will just choose the popular choice as manager and when things go wrong or Brazil lose in 2018, they will start over.

The transition from youth national team to senior national team is much more smoothly at Spain's NT than Brazil's, so they should replace their declining players more easily.

Sorta depends a bit on the definition of bounce back, but by any measure I think you'd still have to say Brazil. Spain was a golden generation, or a platinum generation, if you will, and their 3 consecutive major tournament championships may go unmatched for generations by anyone, much less Spain themselves. Brazil, on the other hand, has defined greatness in the international game for the last 60 years, and as always will enter 2018 as one of the favorites to win, so much so that a World Cup preview often comes down to Brazil vs. Field, and that will continue to be the case. Spain's next generation of players is gonna be darn good as this new group takes the reigns like Isco, Koke, and Costa, but it's hard to ever imagine Spain being the world's dominating force they were a few years ago.

Spain youth is a little overrated as seen by their performances at the olympics and the U-20 World Cup. Brasil just needs a coach to pick the best players available and not one that is biased and picks the ones with big names and that play in big clubs. Like Maicon and Julio Cesar for example that had no business being at the world cup.

Good post. Due to their storied history, Brazil will always be seen as a favorite. This is the first time in a quite a while though that there aren't too many hyped Brazilian prospects coming up. All we hear nowadays is of Spain and Germany's young kids. What's going on in Brazil? I agree that it will be a long time before another team matches Spain's recent run. This next group coming up for Spain has the potential to be good, but I doubt they'll be THAT good. It's hard to replicate that.

not to be picky but how where Brazil among the best two last year?

based on Confed cup? (which they only qualified because they are hosts of this WC)

but anyway Brazil will bounce back if they start selecting their squads and teams better

Spain also has the players to bounce back

I don't think the term "bounce-back" should be used here. Brasil will bounce back to what? Unlike Spain, this world cup didn't mark the end of a successful era for Brasil.

But I think Spain has a brighter short-term future. For Spain its just a case of excepting that their great era is over and showing Xavi, Iker, Alonso, Torres, VdB, etc the exit door.

For Brasil they're already relying heavily on some young players but I don't know how good these players really are. Its a huge advantage playing at home in a world cup. An advantage they won't have in 2018, so things could get worse before they get better.

Spain. Smaller country, less corrupt FA.
This is Brazil's greatest chance yet for a true change on how football is run. However, I don't see it happening. :(

Spain. They will be like Germnay. There will be some older players like Ramos or Pedro that will help the young players transition to the next level. In Brasil we will have another young team in 2018 because Robinho,Ronaldihno,Kaka and Adriano failed this current genaration. They all seemed to fail before their peak was done. So it will be another young team. Basically if thing do not change we could turn into a Arsenal. A deep and talented young squad that keeps coming up short.

I think Brazil, I like their talent, and most of them are young, if they can continue to progress, than I can see them bouncing back quickly.

    Based on...

Came in as heavy Favorite of the WC
Over the past 3 years has gotten these results
    Beat France 3 x 0
    Beat Spain 3 x 0
    Beat Italy 4 x 2
    Beat Uruguay 2 x 1
    Beat Portugal 3 x 1
    Beat Chile 2 x 1
    Beat Australia 6 x 0
    Beat Mexico 2 x 0
    Beat Japan 3 x 0

Now... when they beat Uruguay as the CA defending Champ
they beat Spain when Spain was the ultimate World beater, they were WC Champ and just removed from winning the EURO
they beat a second place Italian team in the EURO

If you want to disconsider the past two years and only take into consideration the last game.. sure Brazil wasn't the best team.. if you want to actually remember how the feeling was prior entering the WC, Brazil was the best team and heavy favorite.

By the way, odds makers had Brazil winning that Germany game almost 70% of the time.

Next you're going to say that beating Italy, Spain Uruguay in the confederations cup were small feats since they exited the WC so quick.

Brasil were favorite because they were at home. They were about 3/1 with Argentina next at about 4/1.

And the CA is also a joke because it's in S. America... So the only tournaments that count are the Euros and the World Cup..

I see what you're trying to get at.. not buying it... While you say all players want to go in Vacation, the confederations cup which is fairly recent has attracted more world wide attention than the Euro or Copa America.

That joke tournament is already the second largest Fifa tournament...

Maybe it's not so funny now..

Lucas Moura, Neymar, Coutinho, Bernard, Douglas Costa, Oscar, David Luiz, Marquinhos, Doria, Guiliano, Mario Fernandes, Fernando, Romulo, Casemiro, William, Paulinho, Sandro Ranieri, Marcos Rocha, Guiliano, Alex Sandro, Fernando Martins all very talented and young players. Brasil problem is not about talent they will always have world class talent and by 2018 there will be others that will come up and be as good as Neymar and Moura and maybe better. Brasil problem is about style of football, continuity, coaching and selection of the right players to make a team. Brasil produces a lot more talented players at a bigger rate than Spain does.

Those youth tornaments arent very important. Many spanish players who won a euro 2008 or WC 2010 never played those youth tournaments. You can have bad teams in U20 competitions, and better teams when they are older and viceversa. Bojan , Fran Merida , Aquino, etc arrived to a U17 World Cup final and they are second division player, while there many players who didnt clasified for these tournaments and they are actually better players than them.

On the other hand , Spain made a bad tournament in Olympic games, but I dont think that they did so bad in the last U20 World Cups that they played. They were eliminated in quarters by Brazil and Uruguay, but Brazil and Uruguay didnt show being better than Spain. Brazil won by penalties and had the referees with them. Uruguay won a very equilibrated match with an isolated goal in the 105-110 minute of the match. Brazil won the tournament , and Uruguay arrived to the final losing by penalties against France . Then we can say that Spain had enought level or talent to won those tournaments, but in World Cup tournamentes good luck or knowing how to play in dificult times is very important , and Spain failed , but not because they are less talented than brazilians and uruguaians. Germany in the last times dont have good performances in youth world or European cups , and I dont think that they arent producing good young players.

Finally, Brazil have more talented players because they are 150-200 millions while Spain is 40 , but I dont see high class players like Ronaldo , Romario, Rivaldo or Ronaldinho in the actual. They are like Oscar or William.
Brazil has fewer talent than between 1990-2006.

Brazil only got as far as they did because they were hosting. I doubt Neymar can carry them as far as he did in Russia. It also serves to mentioned that Fred or Jo started most games up top for them.

Spain is still loaded with many talented players (so much so that some didn't even make the WC squad). They'll bounce back as soon as next year.

The Confederations Cup being in South America is not the reason for it being a joke. It will also be a joke when it takes place in Russia next. It's just a worthless trophy.

The Copa America is a real prestigious tournament and it's the 3rd most important after the World Cup and the Euros. The World Cup is first because it has all the top European team as well as Brazil and Argentina. The Euros are second because they have every big team in international football except Brazil and Argentina. The Copa America is third because it has Brazil and Argentina. The Confederations Cup is just a rehearsal for the World Cup. It was never meant to be a real trophy. Too many big teams are missing for it to be relevant anyway.
