I was sure when Kompany set off on his long run near the end of the game we were going to be undone. On the shot though he did show that he is a world class defender.

He is such a quality player, I said it before the match, for me, Belgium is Kompany +10. He would have been on helluva power forward.

They did. It's strange. Lukaku's on Chelsea's books and he was the clear catalyst that knocked us out of the WC, but I don't have any hate for him. I don't really even have any hate for Belgium like I did for Ghana. Belgium looked legit today. I hope they crush Argentina... who really looked bad.
And yes, despite playing for City, props to Vincent Kompany for being a great professional and a great player. He was huge for Belgium today.

They are just like us, one QF appearance, their fans were all respectful of our team, their players didn't take turns laying down on the field as soon as they went ahead, they didn't dive. I would love to see Belgium win it all.

Dem Belgiuns all recall the 3-0 beatdown from 1930 that we gave 'em and after getting their revenge finally, they took their victory lap with class. Basically, it was the exact opposite display of what el Try woulda done!

It's rather odd, only the US seems to give us a bit of respect, the English press are still saying we are under-performing. Not sure what kind of fantasy standard we are being held up to, TBF.

    So, Russia 2018?

Amazingly I would say Tim Howard was clearly man of the match, even if the USA lost.
As for Kompany, he's class through and through.

The reason you don't hate Belgium is because Belgium is a clearly superior side that deserved to win. Yes, we kept it close, but they beat us, fair and square. It's not the same as Ghana 06 and 10, where we actually outplayed them in stretches, but they scored on us with questionable calls and killed the clock with odious grassrolling.

You really think so? We do not have one guy who gets regular minutes on a champions league team.

I think in the Group stage Belgium did not play all that well, yet won all 3 games. Take a very talented team to do this.

I see you guys beating Argentina and then playing Holland in what i think could be an epic game. I have Belgium going to the finals, but not quite able to beat either Germany or Brasil.

imo Belgium is likable because their players and fans are likable. They are not delusional like England fans, or have a superiority about them like the Germans and their players don't have all the drama that you see with the central and south american players

Any stories from the Belgian sport press you can link us to on the Belgian reaction to the US (and Tim Howard's) performance? Seen the tweet/quotes from Kompany and Wilmots but nothing from straight out of Belgium.

I don't know if you can hold the English press up to anything Football-related anymore. :)

They're exhibit A on how the media can sink a national team.

4 years is a long time though. Looking at Belgiums squad from their 2009 qualifiers, Van Buyten is the only one on a "typical" champions league team. Most of them were on teams like AZ, Anderlecht, and Standard Liege. Not bad teams, but not quite the teams that they're on today.

Lukaku was on loan at us last season dude, hence the reason he and Howard embraced and swapped shirts at the final whistle.....hoping he signs for us permanently this summer as he's said that move to us last season was the best in his career and Chelsea obviously don't want him by the looks of it.

Got to say though I have fell in love with the USMNT during this World Cup! I hate watching England because they never show the passion or pride that you guys have shown despite the array of talent that our country has available. If we had put an ounce of effort into our performances as what the US did then we'd get behind our guys more.

Gotta love Tim Howard though! Absolute beast in goal last night and has been for Everton for many years! It'll be a sad day when he hangs up his gloves! :(
