In the past, I have done most of my soccer viewing at Fado. With the problem/cost of parking downtown, I would like to explore the possibility of other viewing venues. Any suggestions for places that draw a good crowd and with good atmosphere?
I'd say yes. It was basically full for the women's World Cup final I went there to watch, but I did have a seat.
The Tavern at 12th and Lamar. US fans are watching the US - Nigeria game at Haymakers (Manor Rd.) this evening. Really, 4 years ago pubs all over the city were pretty full for the games. You should be able to find a good place close by. I'm planning on going to the Flying Saucer at the Triangle for games after work (I can walk there). Only challenge might be games going up against NBA playoffs, what with the Spurs in it. But times shouldn't conflict much.
I watched the CL final last year at the Tavern. It wasn't crowded and the atmosphere was quite bad. May be it will be better for the WC. Flying Saucer is an interesting idea. Is it easy to get parking in the parking garage there? Have you watched soccer matches there before?
I don't know about atmosphere. I'll be downtown for the opener due to work, but I won't be going to Fado's. Just to crazy. I'll probably head out with some coworkers to some bar. I think this year will have a higher crowd than 2010. Mr Tramps is nice, but can get packed too.
I think I have once. It will be interesting to see. On the plus side, we shouldn't be up against any NBA playoff games.
Wanted to make sure everyone here knows about the fan-zone style watch event that will be held at the Long Center on Tuesday for USA-Belgium: http://austinaztex.com/2014/06/27/austin-aztex-host-austins-biggest-world-cup-party/ Beer will be sold, lawn chairs etc. are welcome. I've heard there will be ESPN cameras as well. Come out, have a blast, root for our boys, and help show off how big of a deal soccer is in Austin.
