Flamengo has a tradition of being eliminated in the qualifying group of the Libertadores lol

Brazil got the record this year... 3 clubs eliminated. A shame. On the other hand, these are 3 clubs that definitly do not have a good Libertadores track record.

Last time Botafogo had qualified for a Libertadores was 1996. And they qualified now and were not paying their team salaries.

Atletico Paranaense have a president considered mad by many. He is the president since before the dawn of times, and is more of a fan than a rational administrator you know? At the end of the brazilian league last year, when Atletico Paranaense had a very good campaign, they fired the coach that made they play well AND their best and most experienced player. Anyway, they played the Libertadores only 3 times this century and were eliminated in qualifying 2 times.

And finally Flamengo... they do not have a good Libertadores since they won it in the 80s.

number of brazilian clubs in the Libertadores, which ones qualified, which ones were eliminated.

ps: most of the shields above should be straightforward for anyone with some knowledge of Brazilian football. However:
    2000 eliminated: Juventude
    2001, 2002 and 2004: São Caetano
    2003: blue shield is Paysandu
    2005 eliminated: Santo André
    2006 eliminated: Paulista Jundiaí
2007: red shield with blue bird is Paraná Clube
2009: red and black shield with yellow lion: Sport Recife. Considered a medium club... large fanbase, not many titles.

Second year in a row we suck. What gives me hope is that with practically no coach we got 9 points last years edition and 10 now, so with a decent coach we should pass no problems.

I can´t explain to him because I am still unable to understand what he really meant with

I am not sure if he was saying that Botafogo would dominate or that, IF Botafogo dominated any team in the Libertadores, that team would be worse than lower division brazilian sides. Which of course would be truth IF Botafogo dominated any team, which it didn´t.

Botafogo is a mess. Besides not paying salaries, they lost Seedorf and some other important players AND the coach that qualified them to the Libertadores in 2013. What coach did they put in place? An inexperienced guy from the club´s own youth categories, who had never coached a professional team.

It´s interesting to notice that the brazilian clubs who qualified are Cruzeiro and Grêmio, who have some of the best Libertadores track record in Brazil, as well as Atletico Mineiro, who did not have a good Libertadores track record until it won it last year (with a lot of luck, true), but it seems the current team acquired the experience needed.

this is the worst Libertadores campaign by brazilian clubs since 2002, when INTERESTINGLY, Flamengo, Atletico Paranaense and Grêmio were also playing it.

Guess the two teams that got eliminated in the group phase in 2002? Yes, Flamengo and Atletico Paranaense.

There is a certain pattern to it, I would say.

Assuming Gremio and Ñuls win their home games, we're going to have:

    Argentina 5/5 (1 winner, 4 runner-ups)
    Brazil 3/6 (2 winners, 1 runner-up)
    Mexico 2/2 (1 winner, 1 runner-up)
    Bolivia 2/2 (1 winner, 1 runner-up)
    Paraguay 2/2 (1 winner, 1 runner-up)
    Uruguay 1/3 (1 winner)
    Chile 1/3 (1 winner)
    -----
    Colombia 0/3 (1 third, 2 last)
    Ecuador 0/2 (1 third, 1 last)
    Venezuela 0/2 (1 third, 1 last)
    Peru 0/2 (2 last)

Atlético Nacional jugándose la vida, y va ganando 1-0 de visita.

PS: 1-2 still winning Atletico. Worthy end of the group phase, this match is going to be to the death.

I hear you. I picked Newell's to win tonight as they were at home and as they've got several World Cup veterans: Heinze, Maxi Rodriguez... they are a solid team with experience and team chemistry. I really did not think they wouldn't advance.

I speculate that with several players in their mid-30s, and with the exhaustion of failing to advance after the frustrating semifinal defeat last year, Newell's probably has to rebuild. They probably won't succeed in the 2015 Libertadores with a roster loaded with older players - that's assuming they qualify.

Es un payaso Guzmán, siempre lo fue.

Newells siempre jugó al filo con ese tipo en el arco, y ya hace rato que está.

Pero también perdió contra un buen equipo, che.

I did not see the whole Newell s game, but i am under the impression two of the goals are directly to blame on the goalkeeper.

The first one definitely was. I was taken aback that a goalkeeper like Guzman who had seemed solid in the performances I happened to watch could've made such an amateurish mistake. The third goal.... it kind of reminded me a little bit of one or two of the goals from Argentina 0, Colombia 5 (no disrespect to the Argentines) from 1993.

You realize Heinze didn't play last night? And Maxi Rodriguez is not just a World Cup veteran he pay going to play in Brazil this summer! and he limped off after 32 minutes, which was a huge loss.

And you forgot Ever Banega who is also going to Brazil this summer and could start, but has has had a terrible time readjusting to South American game. Also they have David Trezeguet, who won the World Cup, and players like Bernardi and Matteo who have lots of experience.

And Newell's will have to rebuild and it's already starting... Alfredo Berti their coach resigned after the game last night, and Heinze has already announced his retirement. He's out after this season, while Trezeguet will return to my club, as he's only on loan at Newell's. Banega is also only on loan and will probably return to Europe next season if he has a decent World Cup.

Newell's will be a completely different side in 2 months time

My god man you are obsessed with putting Argentina down aren't you? Not one thing about that game last night reminded me of Argentina vs Colombja from 21 years ago

And comparing Goycochea to Guzman is blasphemy

From now on every header from a corner I see I'm gonna say reminds me of zidanes headers in the 98 World Cup final

Heinze was part of this year's Libertadores campaign. Last night was only one match.

Newell's will have to rebuild? Yes, that's what I wrote.

No, I'm not. Assuming you were here last year, I actually praised Newell's in the 2013 Libertadores when they eliminated a certain team which your team has a rivalry with (it was a PK shootout). You're just being overly sensitive. And, who mentioned Goycochea or Guzman?

As you wish. 1998 is buried... ancient history. We earned a 5th star on our uniform since then. ;)

Pal, this is a LIBERTADORES (South American Cup) thread... and you are Argentinean and you apparently LIVE in Argentina.

Why the hell are you refering to the World Cup, which starts in June and ends in July as THIS SUMMER??

It´s winter for god´s sake! If you lived in the northern hemisphere and this thread was about some northern hemisphere competition, I am ok with saying "this summer", because you are refering to the season which is going to be where you and most of the people in the thread live.

But in this thread, and for us, the World Cup happens THIS winter.

    only the first one?

I re-watched the goals and now I think ALL THREE goals were his fault!!! Newell's should have won this game if the goalkeeper wasn´t so bad.

1st goal: the defenders also were to blame for returning the ball to the goalkeeper. Defenders should NOT do that unless they know the goalkeeper is GOOD with his feet (like Rogério Ceni or Manuel Neuer). Even so, he should had kicked the ball immediately instead of what he did

2nd goal: he took AGES to fall. Poor reflexes and positioning.

3rd goal: imho, bad mistake too. Goalkeepers should NOT go to the edge of the box IF there are defenders marking the attackers. And there WAS a Newells defender marking the attacker. That attacker would have to kick from far away and from a bad angle, or would have to dribble the Newell´s defender (and risk other´s arriving to help). Instead, the goalkeeper went to the edge of the box and made it easier for the Atletico Nacional attacker, who instead of needing a difficult kick from far away that would be probably saved, could just lobby the ball over goalkeeper and defender!

Look... what the ******** was he doing there???

Until the Atletico Nacional was able to take control of that ball, there would be ONE and most probably TWO Newells defenders in front of him!!!

    ----------------

btw, it´s a shame he commited such blunders in the most important game, because this same goalkeeper operated some miracles in the matches against Grêmio (our own goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe also did some impressive saves... both goalkeepers were some of the best players, in both Gremio-Newells matches).

The first goal Guzman was too nonchalant and Trellez's Hustle was rewarded.
The second goal was a good counter attack and Sherman Cardenas slotted home a nicely placed goal.
The third goal he was caught coming out and being too aggressive but that was a spectacular finish by Berrio who usually misses things like that. Not to mention that was a great pass by Cardenas.

I still think his reaction was VERY slow... he took too long to fall. He COULD have done that save.

he was not caught coming out. He was in the middle of the box when the play started, he could have gone back to the goal instead of doing such a mistake as going to the edge of the box.

this is a thing you learn at Goalkeeper class number 2: only go to the edge of the box to face an attacker mano a mano, as a LAST resort, when you are the last defender and yourself need to block the attacker´s angles. DO NOT do it if there are defenders able to help.

THIS is when the goalkeeper can (and must) go face mano-a-mano the attacker, on the edge of the box

the attacker had ALREADY dribbled past the last defender, is going straight to the goal (with good striking angle) and the other defender is running behind and will never catch him.

sorry, you can say the 2nd goal was maybe not his fault, but the 1st and 3rd definitly were.

if not for him, Newell's would have at least TIED the game, and qualified.

The most frustrating thing for those who support Newell's Old Boys is that this team showed quality in the group stage. They were oftentimes better than Grêmio during the first half at Porto Alegre and obliterated Nacional by 4 goals to none in Uruguay. This is why I mentioned rebuilding - it reminds me of those NBA teams that are very good, are title contenders, peak, but have consecutive playoff disappointments, and eclipse. Their best chances for a title were last year and this year. If as was said earlier they will be a totally different team in 2 months, unless it's an overhaul that maintains the team's competitiveness, the team may not contend for the Libertadores in 2015.

And I never expected a mistake like the one that generated Atl.-Nacional's first goal from a team like NOB.
