I just read some really sad news and figured we should open a thread about the Seleção past. Djalma Santos, a right back who played four WCs for us from 54 to 66, passed away today at the age of 84. He's was quite arguably the best right back of all time.

    Descanse em paz.

Djalma Santos, bicampeão mundial, morre em Uberaba aos 84 anos

Ex-jogador morreu em decorrência de um quadro de pneumonia grave. Djalma estava internado desde 1º de julho

Former Palmeiras and Brazilian national team player Djalma Santos has died in Uberaba at the age of 84. He is considered by many as the best right-back of all time.
Djalma Santos was admitted to hospital on January 1 with pneumonia, his condition got worse yesterday after temporarily improving a few days earlier.
He started his career in 1948 at Portuguesa, where he played for 11 years before joining Palmeiras in 1959, playing 501 games for the Verdão, and retired in 1970 at Atlético Paranaense.
The right-back played four World Cups, winning the title in 1958 and 1962 and getting name in the best team of the competition three times.
Djalma Santos was never sent off in his career, and was awarded the Belfort Duarte award for this reason.

I believe is was named in the team of the tournament in 1958 notwithstanding that he played only 1 game, the final!

He was -- and also in 54 and 62, but of course, not with just 1 game.

Thanks for moving my thread, Mengão86. I didn't notice this one when I made it, my bad.
@lawsonishere I'm not aware of any issue with sambafoot. I looked for a quick article in English, and found that link. Got the video myself from YT.

I never saw him play. But I do know his name is amongst those in the pantheon of heroes who made Brazilian soccer known all over the planet, the most beloved, and the most respected.

    Descanse em paz Djalma.

DJALMA was a God before he left us. Your body may be resting but in the heavens you are running the field.

On this day 4 years ago, Dunga gave me an excellent birthday present. We rolled into Rosario and laid the smack down on Maradona's Argentina. It'll be a moment I will never forget!

Also on this day, in 1993, Colombia embarassed Argentina by the scoreline of 5-0!

You beat me to it, Mengão86. This victory was especially sweet for a number of reasons:

    1. Through this victory, Brazil qualified for South Africa 2010 - on Argentine soil.
    2. Brazil's streak of wins over Argentina continued with yet another official match victory: 2005 Confeds Cup final, 2007 Copa América final, and a 2010 World Cup qualifier win. I lurked in the Argentina NT forums that day, and one comment I'll never forget was (paraphrased): "I'm not even mad, I'm just tired of losing to Brazil."
    3. It was one of the most significant victories of the Dunga Era, and while the 2009 Confeds and 2007 Copa América title were certainly significant and impressive, it was yet another win against heavyweight opponents (Italy, Uruguay, etc), further credentialing our historical status as World Cup favorites even further.
    4. It was Argentina's only second time losing a World Cup qualifying match on home ground - the first was the defeat to Colombia 20 years ago today, and the fact that Diego Maradona lobbied AFA successfully to move the match to Gigante de Arroyito to pressure and to intimidate our players utterly failed.

Ganhar é bom, mas ganhar da Argentina é muito melhor!

    (And happy birthday!)

September 6 marked the 100th birthday of legend Leônidas da Silva. He even got a homage from Google:

Nilton Santos "a Enciclopedia" passed away today at 88.

Nilton Santos was one of the greatest full backs and players of all time. He was part of the 4 WC teams from 50-62 playing a total of 75 games. At club level he played his whole career at Botafogo.

Sad that he didn't get to witness the WC in 14 as he was a part of the 1950 team.

i don't know if this is the appropriate thread, but i'm reading the biography of Garrincha. amazing story so far. i'm at the point where he led brazil to the world cup in 1962 and botafogo to the carioca title in 1962 (which was when his career basically ended)...

Yeah the Little Bird sure made the number 7 shirt a number not to forget! Especially his Herculean effort in winning the 1962 World Cup in Chile!

Good stuff. Yeah some players were playing fairly hard. Ronaldo got whacked on the ankle ... pretty funny. Edilson was cussed and booed every time he got the ball too.

    Marcos was awesome !
