Here's the latest from Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà (translated from Italian):

Exclusive: Palmer-Brown and Juve, training stints expected

Juventus’ deal for Erik Palmer-Brown, the 1997-born defender, will see them ‘parking’ the youngster with Sporting Kansas City until he reaches the age of eighteen. It is in Juve’s best interest that the teenager, considered to be very promising and already part of his country’s U-20 side, gain the necessary experience before arriving in Italy, and it’s a solution that also works out well for his U.S. club.

The agreement, which will be signed after the January transfer market, will also see Palmer-Brown coming to Italy for various training stints in order to facilitate his settling in as he prepares to make the move permanently. It’s a solution has been studied in detail and one that satisfies everyone.

Am I dreaming?... A real life American defender wanted by Juventus. Wanted so bad at such a young age that they are willing to arrange things around his needs? Nope...It can't be real.

Honestly, I'm not sure you can find a big club that isn't interested in an American youth player.

Yeah, but this is honestly the first time in a long time I can remember where they want him this badly. I mean a guy who is genuinely committed to the US and isn't a dual national who we might be lucky to get.

What's crazy is Palmer-Brown isn't even the best CB prospect in his age group imho, Tommy Redding is a stud.

Borussia Dortmund and Junior Flores and Liverpool and Marc Pelosi, both are committed to the US. Liverpool signed Pelosi to an extended contract after his injury and BD has been very accommodating with Flores.

Mostly I had forgotten about Pelosi, and Flores slipped my mind.

This type of "parking" strategy has been used in the past.

For instance when Hoffenheim signed Joseph Gyau and Charles Renken. Those two also didn't have Euro passports. So the German club parked them at the Vancouver Whitecaps academy until they were 18.

From the way the article makes it sound, those "other factors" are the appearances he makes with KC; the more they play Palmer-Brown next season, the more they will end up getting for him.

So the incentive to develop him is purely financial.

But there's no way they're going to give much playing time to a 17 year old centerback. Not when they still have Besler, Opara, Collin (I think he's still there), etc.

Erik should get plenty of playing time with US youth teams, and in the reserve league I guess........................

I'm sure the incentive for SKC is financial in some way, though. And of course they'd love to see "their kid" do well and advance. It's a good advertisement for the academy while recruiting other youth players.

I think this is a step up form that. SKC has monetary incentive to develop and play EPB in first team games. I'm thinking brief cameos over the next couple of years and perhaps some starts (it's not unheard of) in these games.

Read what clint wrote. That's my position. He isn't getting tons of time as a 16 year old with the defending champs .... a team that regularly gave up the fewest amount of shots the past 2 or 3 years. Simply not happening. There must be something wrong with the article. Either it is for more money, some outside sharing arrangement for players, etc., or this deal makes zero sense for KC. 250K is peanuts.

It's unheard of for a 17 year old centerback to play in MLS games. I mean, this kid IS NOT READY for MLS game time yet. He doesn't even turn 17 until this March.

Last season when some posters were screaming for Matt Miazga to get playing time for NYRB, we couldn't come up with many 18 year olds to ever play CB in MLS. This kid will be a year younger than that in this upcoming year. We've had 17-and-younger attacking players get minutes in the league, but not defenders. Kellyn Acosta was 18 last year when he started getting games for FCD post-U20 World Cup. I'm not saying it's impossible.................it just seems unreasonable for a team to give 17-year old Palmer-Brown game time unless SKC has an injury crisis.

SKC will have some fixture congestion this season with CCL and USOC games on the docket, however. We're gonna start this 17 year old in the CCL? Doubt it. So maybe a token USOC game....................

SKC will be in MLS, USOC, and CCL play next year. Besler will be gone for 2 months. Wouldn't surprise me if he does get some playing time, even though he is behind Besler, Collin, Opara, Olum. A Collin suspension while Besler's away at the world cup and he's on the bench at least.

Never believe financial terms until a club confirms them. We've already heard 2 numbers, so there's no reason this guy has the correct terms either.

Which is precisely why I said I don't trust the article. The terms I have seen used are silly.

Obviously the article is short on details, but it does say the fee could rise "considerably" based on the number of appearances he makes, for whatever that's worth.

I guess we'll get more insight as to whether that's true if we see Palmer-Brown start getting late-game sub minutes in games SKC is already running away with...

Also is it SKC appearances only? SKC is affiliated this season with Orlando and Oklahoma City in USLPro.

What if SKC sends Palmer-Brown to OKC or Orlando? Would appearances in the 3rd tier of American soccer impress Juventus enough to significantly increase the fee?

edit: @ielag great minds think alike

It's not clear from the article.

I asked a couple of Italian friends to take a look at it and they said they would imagine them to be SKC appearances, but couldn't say for 100% certain.

Haven't read through the whole thread, so this may be resolved by now, but he doesn't have an EU passport so he can't go before he turns 18.

Juve was interested in him before he signed with SKC also
