Believe me it took everything I had not to type Rangers. Everything. I sat for a few minutes trying to think of other names / ways to pay homage to the Front Range. I drew a blank. Sadly that name just mad sense Oh just for good measure, I absolutely hate The NY Rangers and TX Rangers and it's not even hockey or baseball related! It's just..................well..............I hate anything Rangers. On second thought, maybe I shouldn't suggest Rangers for Colorado Springs --- it would instantly bring stir up negative connotations in my head. Shit. I guess I'll submit Colorado Springs 1886. It's the year the city was incorporated. They could be nicknamed the '86ers.
That was my vote! I see that my Rangers name I submitted made the cut even though it pained me to even submit that name give my love of Celtic! I wouldn't be surprised if others suggested that name as well. I couldn't be the only one, right???? The actual name was Colorado Rangers. It just made sense when I submitted it.
I'm going for Colorado Springs FC & I encourage everyone on here to do the same. My main reason is that we have here a team & an organization that so far are clearly trying to do the right thing in building a club that truly represents the community it is based in. A proper football club representing a proper city. So why should we saddle this with some 'franchise' moniker that's pretty much arbitrary right now? Many of us complain that the Rapids / KSE organization can come across as too corporate / cheesy so why do the same here? I should also add that pretty much every team that's been named / renamed since 2010 has dispensed with a nickname in the title. Clubs such as New York City FC, Sporting Kansas City, Orlando City, Minnesota United & Detroit City are seen as some of the most forward thinking / up & coming teams in this country right now. A nickname in the title does not get you a great stadium, the best 11 on the field or a fanbase that's the envy of the rest of the league. I'm not saying the club shouldn't have a nickname, however I think it should come out in time as traditions are laid down by supporters, via the hours spent in the bars & on the terraces. Orlando City is a good example here - they are nicknamed 'The Lions' but they don't have it all 'made up franchise style' in the name. As for FC, I'm sure our NFL friends can cope with this & I'd also like to add that the 3 Pacific Northwest clubs (to name but a few in North America) use this in their names & nobody appears to be confused by it. So choose wisely & unless you really love one of the alternatives, make it 'Colorado Springs FC'!
It's funny that a name of the format [Region][Nickname] is considered cheesy and corporate despite the vast numbers of US sports teams professional and amateur that have used names of that format over god knows how many decades. Whereas we're supposed to use "FC" when the vast majority of people in this country call the game "soccer" rather than "football."
Just throwing out random stuff as I was just there last year... Mix and match accordingly. Lot of history in the area... Pioneers, Miners, Pike Peak, Royal Gorge, Front Range, Aviators, Gold, Olympic training is there....
Agreed, really like this name. Could even use FC if they like. Anyone going to Quinn's on Friday? I wanted to go since I'm here this week but I'm leaving before Friday.
So, is this club really going to happen? The earlier articles said they plan to play at Sand Creek Stadium and will have to make improvements to bring seateing capacity from 1500 to 3500, add trailers for locker rooms and media equipment, etc. I assume it's this soccer field adjacent to the baseball stadium? Since I stay in Springs I wish there was some cool name I could contribute to this but I got nothin right now. Hmm, what is special about Colorado Springs? After these last two summers, Inferno would be accurate. Or 86ers sounds kinda cool... I had thought Sand Creek Stadium was at Sand Creek High School. But if that picture ^^ is where they're planning to play, it's next to Security Service Field where Triple A Sky Sox play. Hopefully they could get with Sky Sox/Rockies to do some promos.
Yeah, looks like it's that field right next to Security Service Field: http://ragainsports.com/#ourplans
This is an interesting perspective but I think it's more true of how British franchises developed than American ones. Many American teams started in poor neighborhoods and often by gangsters who wanted not only a front for being near certain areas, but also an image of doing something good in their community. From what I've read sports teams would frequently name themselves how gangs named themselves, with their town/neighborhood followed by an attribute of tha team/gang that they were already known to possess. Example, tha Chicago Cardinals (now Arizona Cardinals) were supposedly started by tha mob in late 1800s and played on a local level, almost Park n Rec type league. They wore red, hence tha name Cardinals. As most gangs at that time had a place name followed by nickname (and still do), this has caught on and become engrained in American sports culture. Even Park n Rec level teams today use that model of park/neighborhood and attribute; Springs Pride, Cottonwood Strikers, Shadowglen Warriors. I believe that style of naming is more true of these United States than FC or United or Sporting. To me that model has more to do with our traditions than a corporate idea. Totoro thanx for this link to their website. If anyone's tryna get to Jack Quinn's, it's super easy to find, literally right next to tha Interstate. Colorado Springs downtown is tiny compared to Denver's and without so many confusing one way streets. You'd just take I-25 down to Cimarron exit, go 3-4 blocks east, make a right turn on Tejon and it'll be on your right side. I'm hoping to make this depending on how work goes...
