I was astonished at just how young Tom Clancy was. I thought he was much older. Incredible insight for a guy that never served.

I thought his writing terrible. It was like reading a high school freshman's view of the world.

Maybe, but the detail was very spot-on which at least showed he put the leg work with regards to research.

    He'd been sick for a while. Raise a glass...or a dozen

Kind of off-topic, but if friggin Heart & Canada's most baffling export -Rush - can be voted into the Rock n Roll HOF, how the f#ck are The Pogues not in there? I'll put up their first three albums against just about anyone's cept maybe the Beatles, Stones & Zeppelin.

Its because the Rolling Stone reviewers who decide on such things hate the Pogues genre. Its the same reason Yes isnt in the RRHC, making it a cynical joke on anyone who gives a shit about what they purport to be, but arent really.

Probably true. But RS writers love songs like "Fairytale of NY" and while great it was essentially a one-off. They have so many other great songs to choose from & Shane's songwriting was phenomenal.

The concept of a punk band rooted in traditional Irish music was mind blowing at the time. Like the 1st time I heard Psychocandy, Loveless or London Calling and thought "well now, THIS is a game changer!' They're an entirely unique brand like The Ramones or Parliament-Funkadelic...both in the HOF.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is even more pointless than I'd feared it would be when I first heard about it. And that's pretty ********ing pointless.

True. But Heart?? That's a cockpunch to any decent artist not in the HOF. It would be akin to putting Danica Patrick in the NASCAR HOF because she's a chick.

    Arguably NSFW.

The "released" version is much better ("Fleetwood Mac?! FLEETWOOD MAC??!?! What's worse than Fleetwood Mac, the Archies or something?!"), but doesn't appear to be available on Youtube.

For a brief, terrible second, I thought Mojo Nixon died. That would've destroyed my weekend.

No problem. Not your fault: it has to do with poor eyesight and the odd way Safari pages load sometimes. The video led me to see if he's still retired and it led to me finding a pretty funny line:

Can't wait for Washington to fix the economy. We must take bold action now. If I make the new album free and my entire catalog free it will stimulate the economy. It might even over-stimulate the economy. History has shown than when people listen to my music, money tends to flow to bartenders, race tracks, late night greasy spoons, bail bondsman, go kart tracks, tractor pulls, football games, peep shows and several black market vices. My music causes itches that it usually takes some money to scratch.

What's wrong with Fleetwood Mac? What about their compositions and arrangements caused this post? Can you detail specific things about their music that you don't care for, and if so, why?

I'm not trying to start a flame war, but whenever I read comments like this, it's almost always about a band whose music was heard and appreciated by quite a few people around the world. But when asked, the people who make the comments never seem to clarify exactly what it is about the music that they don't like- it's always a general teenage-y reply of "they're just lame". I'd like to read more in-depth reasoning.

I was quoting song lyrics (I thought that was pretty clear given the way I constructed the post, but apparently not). The next time I see Mojo Nixon, I'll pass your query along. :)

One of the little woman's favourites, Fleetwood Mac.

'The Chain' has been used as part of the intro to BBC's F1 coverage for a LONG time...

F1 is quite popular over here but I've always suspected that's partly because most of the constructors are based here. Even Ferrari at one time had an English chief engineer, (based in Norfolk), who used to phone the stuff in... pretty bizarre, frankly.

Fleetwood Mac wasn't bad and most of Rumours was very good. OTOH I'd love to Start A Fire under Billy Joel and then drag him out to sea in the Downeaster Alexa.

And just about every indie act from Joy Division/New Order, to the Cure, Replacements, Pixies, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, Smith etc. deserve to be in the HOF but aren't and probably won't be. At least until some of the 60s dinosaurs who vote die off I guess.

Keep in mind the Pixies only just became eligible a year or two ago. I'm not real good a predicting what the RRHOF will do, but I'll be kinda surprised if they aren't in the next class, and the Cure probably too.

Selling a whole lot of records is a major big deal to the Hall, though, and I'm not sure the others will get in soon.
Heart sold more records than maybe all of those combined if you leave out the Cure...

They have become a concert event though, which ensures that they will continue to induct six or eight artists a year; so they'll have to get to those guys eventually. Probably right after they induct Clapton again for Derek and the Dominoes. Or the Bluesbreakers. Or Blind Faith. Or Delaney and Bonnie. One of those years... Plus they can get Jim Messina a couple more times with Poco and Loggins and Messina... and zydeco bands-- they've hardly touched zydeco bands...

I put Tusk level with Rumours myself- love 'em both.

I thought Billy Joel had a pretty good thing going early, with the "Piano Bar guy makes it big with songs about NYC culture" schtick. I see The Downeaster Alexa as an extension of that. Try to think of him as Paul Simon or War or Willie Nelson with a piano.

If these guys --save the Cure, who I saw live in ATL in 1992 or so-- hadn't gone so far out of their way to create an artistic environment that placed itself outside traditional musicianship and marketing (and listening tastes), they'd be more likely to get in. But IMO the whole "indie" thing is a kewl club that becomes less kewl as soon as a band records something good enough to be appreciated by millions.

Modern classical composers don't get the same respect the dead ones do. Today's jazz musicians don't get the respect Miles and 'Trane and Bill Evans and Mingus did.

I'm lucky. I'm one of those people who appreciates good lyrics, but I (almost always) can ignore bad lyrics and appreciate good musicianship backing up crap lyrics.

Billy Joel is one of the very few artists whose lyrics are so bad that they interfere with my enjoyment of the music.

Not sure if I'm arguing with the above or exemplifying, but its hard for me to think of anyone who deserves that same respect; Joshua Redman, maybe? Branford? Metheney? (At my age, a lot of my "today's musicians" are actually yesterdays, of course.) Tal Wilkenfield I guess...

I'm still not a misogynist, and you've still got some growing up to do.

Rosenbaum tripped every hipster alarm in existence with that article. And he's old enough to know that the ideas about what made music great were very different when Just The Way You Are was released than they are now. I bet dude's got a tab at Starbucks. Crabs in a barrel...

What you're asking is really a subjective thing. Sonny Rollins is still alive and playing, so IMO that makes him one of today's musicians. So are Ron Carter, Ahmad Jamal, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner. I'd put Redman in the "deserves the same amount of respect" category, and maybe Branford. Wallace Roney, Charnett Moffett and Christian McBride without a doubt.

I'm a big fan of Metheny and would defend his playing talent against anyone's, but he doesn't do enough standards to really be compared to the others. He's been composing and playing his own stuff for a looooong time, and when he's not doing that. he's more into the Jobim covers and collabs with world guys like Richard Bona. The secret about Metheny is, if you've heard him live once, that's probably enough. After that, you choose your favorite recordings of his and listen to them, because both he and (pianist) Lyle Mays have a set of licks that they play in the same place in pretty much every solo, with only minor variations. He's much more of a composition player than a chart player, sums it up.

Tal's a fantastic bassist (and quite easy on the eyes), but not a jazz player, really. She's more known for the modern smooth R&B stuff that people like to call jazz so they'll feel more sophisticated when they're playing or listening. It's not necessary- that music is great and stands on its own.
