I am pretty sure Di Canio has publicly came out and said he no longer has the same belief's he carried before as a younger man.

Actually...no. Fascism is (usually) a form of ultra-nationalism, and therefore takes on national characteristics. German fascism tapped into a deep strain of Aryan mythology and anti-Semitism. Racialism was much less prevalent in other fascisms, more in others. It is conceivable to be a Fascist without being racists.... but yeah, most fascists aprobably re...

By the way, not all racists are fascists. Some are just regular old dumbassess.

Yeah... let's remember that specific words have actual, specific meanings, and all that. Go figure.

Fascism and racism are very different things -- not that they are by any means mutually exclusive. But they are different.

I have mixed feelings about Di Canio, but he is an open book, as they say...

In 2005, the Italian twice gave straight-arm salutes to fans of Lazio, the Rome club where he was playing, and reportedly declared afterwards: "I am a fascist, not a racist."
He has "Dux", the Latin for Il Duce, the name by which the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was known, tattooed on his right biceps and he wrote in his autobiography that he was fascinated by Mussolini whom he described as "a very principled individual".
In a statement issued by the club "regarding the inaccurate portrayal of his beliefs and values from some quarters" Di Canio said: "When I was in England my best friends were Trevor Sinclair and Chris Powell, the Charlton manager [both black former players] – they can tell you everything about my character. I don't want to talk about politics because it's not my area. We are not in the Houses of Parliament, we are in a football club."

    ...From The Guardian...

Say what you want about the tenets of fascism, at least it's an ethos.

Wikipedia's Lazio page seems to be in the hands of a editor who cuts out any reference to Lazio's right wing connection.

I can't decide if it's a good thing we can all appreciate a good fascist joke, or if it really is the end of human life as we know it.

    Or both.

Racism is not about having problems with specific individuals who are minorities, it is being bigoted against minorities per se. Here's a dark joke: what's a philo-Semite? An anti-Semite who likes Jews. Anyway, fascist movements are typically nationally chauvinistic, ethnocentric and xenophobic. To say fascism is not racism is to make a distinction without a meaningful difference; to say you are an adherent to fascism insofar as you agree to its ideological tenets with the exception of the racist ones is dishonest. Fascism, as practiced, emerges from a view of the world which is fundamentally racist.

One other thing: I love Jozy. I think he's a terrific player and has great character. But his decision to play for a creep like Di Canio raises serious questions. I hope someone in the US soccer media has the stones to press him on it, especially because Jozy accepted a position on Fifa's anti-racism committee.

To be fair, he claims he's "a fascist, not a racist," although I am aware the distinction can be considered humorous.

oddly enough, The Italian fascists were not particularly into anti-semitism. The Jews were not terribly persecuted until the Nazis forced that on them. The Fascists were no picnic, but hating Jews was not their thing.

    Fascism =/= racism.

People are making this Di Canio being a former (we think) fascist a big deal when in regards to Jozy's soccer it has very little impact. If you're going to bitch about Di Canio, bitch about how he's almost uber-passionate to the extent that it's detrimental. I don't think his political views have any impact on Jozy, however, his attitude and discipline may.

If you play hard and don't mess around, Di Canio will respect you and you shouldn't have issues. Di Canio isn't going to be an issue with Jozy unless Jozy slacks in some way.

    tl;dr

Di Canio is being made out to be a horrible manager when in reality, he isn't.

It was usually Craig Gardner last year. Pretty efficient with them, but I can't recall Sunderland ever getting more than 2 or 3 PK opportunities in the Premier League since the Kevin Phillips days.

But how much is that a dated view of 1930's fascism vs a view of modern neo-fascism or post-fascism? After all, the Democratic Party managed to shed much of it's racist image a mere 80 to 100 years after the end of the Civil war. In any case, Mussolini's supporters mostly went to the MSI which notably did not campaign against immigration in 1980's when many other right wing parties in Europe did. They have since then merged with part of the Christian Democrats to become the AN which is in essence an a right-wing populist party.

Where Di Canio stands among all this shifting is debatable but it is conceivable that an Italian Fascist not be a racist.

Di Canio really isn't a creep. A lot of fascists nowadays support more of the ideals of pride in the fatherland and the Catholic Church. I mean, PDC also has admitted that the Samurai culture has had a huge influence in his life and he is also heavily influenced by Japan's spiritual mentality.

You are incorrect, a person or group can be fascist without being racist. There are smaller groups of fascists, which includes a variety of people, that don't hold any particular specific racist beliefs. The world view is better described as a extreme form of pragmatic idealism. It's usually only ethnocentric to the point where it believes, and usually tries to coerce, a single constructed political ideology that it holds as true. The xenophobic part is everything else being rejected and racism is really under that umbrella. Point being, it's not specifically constructed around race at all, but can in many circumstances lead to it.

It's actually an incredibly aesthetic tendency too. Lots of different symbols, art, film, literature, architecture, songs, theatre, design, etc... Anyone interested should really, really check out the Marinetti's The Futurist Manifesto. Marinetti was so fascist that he walked out on the Italian Fascist Party for essentially being too soft.
