It was only a matter of time before some yokel would come out of the woodwork and put the blame on the sport itself for the untimely death of Ricardo Portillo. If you feel like losing some brain cells...there you go:

Fascinating read, if only to note the clash between the old guard of sports writers and the trend with some media companies like the Times.

Noted soccer basher Glenn Macnow was on 94.1 WIP today bashing soccer players' athleticism. His co-host, former Eagle Ike Reese appreciated soccer players' athleticism.

Well said. This sums up the lack of knowledge (or willingness to learn) of many American "mainstream" sports journalists, including here in Boston where the coverage of the New England Revolution has been a disgrace for most of it's existence. Look no further than idiots like Mike Lynch who takes any opportunity he can to knock the game or longtime Globe sports writer Dan Shaughnessy who reused the same anti soccer lines written in 1990 when writing about the 2014 World Cup. People who don't acknowledge the sport's growth in this country over the last 25 years and worldwide popularity (note, they don't have to LIKE it, just acknowledge that many others do) are dinosaurs - to be polite.

I remember Dan Shaugnessy just making up bogus reasons to hate soccer, like there's no movement into an attack. Huh?

A Manchester United shirt worn by the late Bill Foulkes during the 1968 EC1 Final will be sold this Monday at Sotheby's in London by Graham Budd Auctions.

Our Red Devils were the first English team to win the former Champions League Tournament after defeating Benfica 47 years ago at Wembley (4-1). Bill Foulkes gave his shirt to Benfica player Fernando Cruz in the dressing room after the game.Bill Foulkes (who passed away in November 2013) was an absolute legend, making 688 appearances for our beloved United during a remarkable spell of 18 seasons. He and Bobby Charlton were the only 2 survivors of the 1958 Munich air crash to play the final. The shirt is expected to sell for close to 20,000 GBP although it is possible the shirt will exceed this amount as Nobby Stiles' shirt from the 1968 Final was auctioned in 2010 for over 30,000 GBP.

Way too optimistic, IMO, but this is his reasoning:

For anyone who lives in Boston, Mike Lynch from WCVB channel 5 had to be among the biggest soccer bashers. He either ignores the sport altogether or mocks it. After 20 years of ignoring MLS ad the revs, I left my feedback with the channel's president and he said he would share it with Lynch and the sports producer. Eventually these anti-soccer dinosaurs will retire but I hope their departure is hastened whenever possible.
