I' surprised with great the stats in the WC '66 (i though was one of the most violent).

From the recent editions, the WC '06 had good stats, better than '82 & '86 for example.

It depends on what parameters you think is better.
In general, WC06 were not a bad one, average I would say ... no more no less. A WC that many "superstars" were CHOKED ... that made it much less exciting (who was the topscorer? oh Klose, and who was the best player there? an old Zidane with 2 good games)

I wish they put up a STATS for BAD ref as well ... and WC06 was not among the good referee

Those some things revealed according the (only) stats from this thread. Not my opinion, not even Puck, i think.

But, i agree with your general view, James

Yes I agree that WC2006 wasn't very good. If you compare with 1998WC, there some 'old' stars like Hagi and Laudrup managed to reach a good level too, comparable with Zidane in 2006 (IMO Laudrup vs Brazil in 1998 was overall better as Zidane vs Brazil in 2006 with a more dominant stamp/presence on the game throughout the match). On top of that, many nations had many players who reached a good level. Only star who seriously disappointed without a good excuse was Del Piero IMO.

Of 2006 Luis Figo is an unsung 'old hero' IMO. Had three assists as well.

Regarding violence, it has been mentioned a few times before but according to OPTA 1974, 1978 and 1990 were the World Cups with the highest average of fouls per game.

When relating this to the created chances, it is indeed visible that 1990 has the lowest mean and median of all World Cups. 1974 and 1978 also have far lower stats as 1966 and 1970 - the two other tournaments with 16 teams in competition.

2006 was the first after the new offside laws came in I suppose, so if that leads to more shots on goal it also leads to more chances created by default. The laws regarding fouls and yellow/red cards have also got more harsh so the ways to prevent chances being created are more restricted.

Just a couple of ideas about why the stats could change without the quality of players/play improving or even while it declines.

I now categorized it by minutes played. I know the cut-off points are arbitrary so keep in mind that someone who played 249 minutes is perfectly comparable with players who played between 250 and 299 minutes. Similarly, adjacent categories are very comparable as well.
However, as mentioned before, the opposition met by players can vary to an huge extent and the World Cups are not similar either. After all, the average of created chances per 90 minutes is 38% higher in 1970 as in 1990. As shown on the previous page, the mean of a few World Cups lays between 2.00 and 2.10 (1974, 1978, 1986, 1994, 2010). Compared with 1970 (2.57) it is a difference of around 25%.
The following is not meant to come to definitive conclusion about creativity, which this indicator certainly measures, but just intended to put players with a similar amount of minutes under the same bracket. The sense of this is that it becomes naturally harder to keep an high average when one plays more minutes, irrespective of differences in opposition and circumstances.
Only players with more than 1.85 created chances per 90 minutes are included. It is the mean of the most 'negative' World Cup, the 1990 edition.

Since the 1974 World Cup the finalists play 7 games instead of 6 (1966 & 1970). 7 games * 90 minutes = 630 minutes. Hence, this is the final category.
Note, and this is important, that this automatically excludes players from the 1966 and 1970 editions. The finalists of those editions played, without extra time, 540 minutes.

I made a list with the most frequent passers at the World Cup since 1966. The amount of passes per 90 minutes.

    The following conditions are applied:
    • Only last 8 teams
    • Minimum of 300 passes. Players with less as 300 passes aren't included (so no Maradona 1986 or Zidane 1998).
In parentheses the 'chances created per 90 minutes', which is sometimes also called 'key passes per 90 minutes' (in other words: the amount of passes per 90 minutes leading to an attempt towards goal).

IMO, an interesting observation is that three of the most applauded teams (Brazil 1970, Netherlands 1974 and Brazil 1982) do not score very well on this dimension (though both the # of passes and created chances are sensitive to the opposition the teams met). Especially in case of WC70 it might be surprising because despite the warm circumstances it is generally seen as a positive and open World Cup edition. Lowering the threshold to 200 passes, then this is the picture:

    Carlos Alberto 1970 (BRA) 65.67 (1.50)
    Gerson 1970 (BRA) 60.47 (4.22)
    Clodoaldo 1970 (BRA) 54.55 (1.20)
    Rivelino 1970 (BRA) 52.00 (2.60)
    Everaldo 1970 (BRA) 43.17
    Pelé 1970 (BRA) 41.50 (4.67)
    Jairzinho 1970 (BRA) 37.53 (2.21)

    Haan 1974 (NED) 60.86
    Van Hanegem 1974 (NED) 52.29 (2.38)
    Cruijff 1974 (NED) 47.43 (5.14)
    Krol 1974 (NED) 45.00
    Rijsbergen 1974 (NED) 43.15
    Suurbier 1974 (NED) 42.91 (0.72)
    Jansen 1974 (NED) 37.29 (1.29)
    Neeskens 1974 (NED) 30.64 (1.32)

    Cerezo 1982 (BRA) 67.00 (1.75)
    Falcao 1982 (BRA) 61.80 (1.60)
    Junior 1982 (BRA) 54.00 (2.40)
    Socrates 1982 (BRA) 48.40 (2.20)
    Zico 1982 (BRA) 46.22 (3.45)
    Eder 1982 (BRA) 41.80 (2.00)
    Leandro 1982 (BRA) 41.13 (2.85)

Nowadays making many passes is seen as the pinnacle of technical skill and adventurous play. Maybe the preferences of the public has changed? The nature of the game has changed?

Just an observation that not many members of those teams appear on the list.

N.B. Gerson 1970 and Cerezo 1982 did not appear on the list because they made less as 300 passes.

Football is not as "simple" as their rule suggest (put the ball in opponent's net) since it involved 22men on the pitch (of~ 90x120m).

We all know that STATS are not well established for Football (not yet) but only recently. Even so, the criteria are heavily depends on "how we perceive and acknowledge" them.

    Pros (about Castrol data):
1- One can see the big names (in bold) got the best stats (i.e.e Cruijff Pele Zico in each WC)
2- One can also see WC70 and 82 team got at least 4 players having more than 2+ chance created per game)
Hence STATS do back them up in reputation - but maybe not in absolute number (which is again ... debatable and arguable in all cases)

    Cons:
1- Number of passes did NOT reflect how "dangerous or beautiful" a team in attack (like Brazil70 or Holland74) but rather showing how "dominant in MF" or "coherent in rythm" that team is (like Spain/Barca)
2- Chance creation is also doubtful depends on HOW Castrol team "view and count" them. i.e. Brazil70 or else might come up with less chances but most of them could be more dangerous or close to clear chances than another team with "blind crossing in" (still counted as 1 chance creation) that might requires a 'superhuman' to reach it (and score)

You just described Pelé's goal in the 1970 final!! :)
Anyways, in the play that resulted in Brazil's goal against England in 1970, did that count as a chance creation for Tostao, for Pelé or for both?

Definitely it counted as one for Pelé, because he made the assist.

A modernist explanation might be that today players spend less time on the ball which automatically translates into more passes.

And modern players are presumably fitter, which allows them to move more and cover more meters. Which is also important for a 'pass and move' game (in the way someone like Xavi or Pirlo does it, with after each pass a relocation of their body to a different place).
Like my trainer used to say: the ones without the ball decides where the ball can go to.

So, Jairzinho's goal in the final.. That counted as a chance created by Pelé as well right? Not for Gérson? And that massive collective play culminating in Carlos Alberto's goal in the same game, also a chance created by Pelé then, right?

The link quoted above says that also the secondary assister (or a potential secondary assist; also called pre-assist) receives a created chance. The glossary is clear on most criteria (although in case of some criteria I doubt whether two independent coders would reach the same outcome - reading their glossary). So yes, I presume that it would count as a created chance for Gerson.

This is the game with the most created chances in a single World Cup game by a player (don't think the compilation showed all touches/events though but it gives an impression)

yeah my comments are general cases ... and like I said ... it always "debatable" depends on how people VIEWED the assist, chance creation ...

2nd, that Brazil70 team were so great as they made Pele work easier the same way he made them to be .... (Jaizinho's 7goals)
