My middle school son has to read a fiction book portraying another culture. The usual suspects are in my experience noteworthy for portraying a sub-culture within the US (much of which I tend to just see as being part of the culture), but not necessarily noteworthy for being fun to read. I'd like to find something that's goes beyond the US/European borders, but is appropriate for a middle school reader. Anyone have any suggestions.
i was going to recommend books by yves pinguilly, especially ballon d'or which is inspired by the real-life story of salif keita... unfortunately none of his books have been translated into english, which amazed me because it's impossible for a child to get through school here without reading at least two or three of his books. if it's not too late i'll keep thinking.
Thanks for the tip. I might like to read that one. The kid had to pick a book, and ended up reading, "The Cay".
