He played the whole game in a 3-0 win. No goal or assist that I know of, but a full game can't do any harm!

2 bits of Ola playing today:
Saw a comment on the Benfica forum Ola had some good dribbles and did a proper job. This is not top opposition, but finally a game and was not even subbed out. 90 minutes. Good for him and now hoping he can build on this.

I think he is already regretting this move.

he should follow Babel's sensible lead and buy out his contract and come back. He's got a five year contract and Newcastle won't be willing to let him go at a loss. He'll also have few places to go since no one really scouted him at Ajax, and not playing at Newcastle isn't going to improve his resume either.

    • Anita looks clueless at Newcastle. Must be up there with the worst transfer choices a player has made.
    • Ola John finally is seeing first team action and did not do a bad job.
    • I thought van Ginkel played well against Ajax.
    • Clasie is still not on the level of last season, but is not doing really bad or something.
    • RVP is continuing his form he had at Arsenal. Hope that a new club will mean him performing better for NT.
    • Huntelaar is not finding the net easily anymore. Out of form.
    • Afellay is doing bit by bit better at Schalke, though the club lost this weekend.
    • Mathijsen looks past it at Feyenoord.
    • De Vrij is not on the level he was before injury
    • Martins Indi was turned inside out by Tadic today with a goal from Chadli. I think he is a bit hyped for his ability. Not saying he is not a good player long term, but he is not as good right now people make him to be.
    • Willems had a better game this weekend after a bad comeback from his injury. Has also to do with opposition. I disagree with pundits going after him. I still think Willems is a huge talent and that his forward rushes and actions are space he takes to develop himself. I hope he remains doing that and becomes good at it. Trying to nutmeg a defender close to own box is then one step to far. He should not be doing that.
    • Narsingh had a strange game. Was bad considering his chance conversion, good in absolute numbers. He had assists and a goal this weekend, but he remains more a counter winger, then a possession winger. He has the right feeling to give the assists on the right time with a turnover.
    • Lens got injured yesterday.
    • Sneijder is coming back sooner than expected, however Inter is going like a train without him. He will have a tough time getting back into the first team and that means he will have to make a transfer this winter. He needs at least 3 lighting fast players in front of him and a midfield working hard for him. This, or he starts fighting for his spot at Inter, but I hope he leaves that club and competition.
    • Robben was mint in the Cup game of Bayern. Was also captain. This weekend he did not play in competition. He will need to be really good as Bayern don't need him anymore so bad as in the past. This is maybe a good thing for Dutch NT, though Robben always gave his all for the NT. Against England though he was tearing things apart in a friendly and a Robben that wants to prove a point is something to look forward to.
    • Nigel de Jong was one time to late for training or check in time on gameday (one of both) and last 2 games did not play much as a result. He is seen as a good addition for Milan.
    • Emanuelson had a good last game from the right wing. Was subbed out despite of that. I think he is developing a bit, but I remain thinking he is a bit light.
    • Van Rhijn has had now some iffy performances the last games in Eredivisie. Against City I felt he was to blame for the conceded goal, though he was not bad for the rest of the game.
    • Strootman is scoring more these times. He is for club one of the carrying players. Quite a leader. Scoring does not equate bringing football. I think he is good in the defensive part of things, maybe do a bit of commanding of the play, but bringing refined play to the team, not so much.
    • Vermeer is developing as a proper keeper for Ajax. He had that ball distribution to Eriksen against Heracles, bringing him into trouble, but from the line and making saves, he is pretty good. I thought he was really good against City.
    • Not sure how Maher is doing at AZ. Have not seen much of AZ lately. Against Vitesse last weekend I was impressed with a pass he gave. Is playing all games, remains fit and I guess that is the most important thing while developing at his age. I am not sure he is still ahead of van Ginkel for right midfield position.
    • Luuk de Jong is injured
    • Bas Dost peeked after a change of manager at Wolfsburg, but last game went lost. Dost remains the new Huntelaar for me. Maybe not as good, but ith him you play with 10 men in a game.
    • Büttner is defensive too weak at the moment to challenge Evra seriously. Maybe even to weak to make it at all at the club.
    • Douglas looks horrible the last time in Europe and Cup. In both competitions FC Twente is now (almost) out. Today's game against Feyenoord he was again a bit better.
    • Castaignos is the only Dutch player I detest. FC Twente was too good to offer such a punk a striker spot and his whole attitude is the one of a street rat. One of the most vulgar players on the European fields.
    • Krul is back defending the goal of Newcastle. Suarez today got the better of him one time with a great close control action. Other then that he conceded no goals, but he remains slow at times to bring the ball in and his locomotion is overall a bit weird/wild.
    • Vorm is out with injury for more than a month.
    • Elia remains a player that gets subbed off into the second half (also today). He needs to have more assists and goals. Not very effective until now. He is a player with key passes and danger in his actions. Also tracks back.
    • Leroy Fer is also getting back from injury. First has to get match fit again. Not sure the club is eager to give him to the NT squad again.
    • Van Gaal has made some comments towards Bayern board and claims Germany plays his system and with the players he played at Bayern. Van Gaal doing his van Gaal thing.
These are just some players I had something to say about.

    • Were we watching the same Ajax match yesterday? I didn't see van Ginkel do anything much at all. He really wasn't involved in either goal and the Vitesse midfield was pretty much nullified by Ajax possession and pressing. Of course we need to remember that Ajax are just an ordinary mid-table team these days. Vermeer is probably the best shot stopper of all the Dutch keepers. However, he cannot kick to save his life and is a bit on the short side. He's a poor man's Iker Casillas but cannot kick as well.

While this article covers more than just Dutch players, it's still pretty interesting.

Well for me this is the problem with van Ginkel. He kind of fades out of games and has little presence. He and Strootman are opposite's in that Strootman has always something commanding in his game, where as van Ginkel does absolutely not have that. I sometimes ask myself where he is in a game. This having said, I liked how strong he was the times he was on ball and running forward. There was also this action where 2 Ajax players tried to get him off the ball, but failed to dispossess him. Off ball he was throwing with his energy. Looked like a young lion defending his territory, with 1 tackle I thought he crossed the line. I did not like him there and had to look at his number to make sure it was him who was willing to make such harsh tackles. He is kind battler. Stats also prove this.

For all of Ajax ball possession they were not able to crack down Vitesse. Vitesse played quite compact and disciplined. Van Ginkel was mature in executing this game plan. We should not fall in the trap of having preconceived ideas to what a good footballer should act like, when the coach has fabricated a game plan for his team and players executing it. Van Ginkel was never going to dominate Ajax, because A. That was not the gameplan and B. He can't do that on his own. What he and his team (Kashia was also very good) were able to do is giving away little to no chances and make Ajax look toothless. In that setup he was instrumental. We both agree van Ginkel is a player that needs to show more on ball as he is able to do that.

Is van Ginkel a useful player to execute a possession game? Interesting question. I do find him a very vertical player. He is by nature very direct.

I have thought about it yesterday and I have come to the conclusion that, where the development of Ola John is vital for Huntelaar, van Ginkel must be the midfielder that complements van Persie best. Van Ginkel can run with ball up the field and unlike Afellay has the overview to give the excellent pass.

As for Vermeer, I think we should give the guy credit. He is developing and I would not even mind him on goal for the Dutch NT. There are still better options, but I would not feel unsafe. Last year I would have laughed at this suggestion. That's progress.

Vermeer has always been one of the best shot blockers that I've seen. He has other problems which are not so easily dealt with (last season against Utrecht he single handedly lost the match for Ajax because of poor kicking). I agree that he warrants consideration because his native abilities and I think he is better than Vorm on that count. Remember, he was #1 keeper when Van Basten was manager, having taken over for Stekelenberg when Steks could not beat him out when he came back from injury.

Vermeer is a good shot blocker/1on1 keeper. Horrible kicker and his passes through the middle of the field have caused Ajax problems for a long time.
A keeper with his flaws shouldnt play for the NT's in my opinion. Not while we have better options atleast, which we do.

And he did a good job. 1 assist.
Robben did ok.. He missed a lot of chances.
And van Persie is still boss! Even at Man U, he is boss.. The fact that he can not give 100% for Orange lies entirely with Orange.

Robin van Persie has scored 11 goals in 14 games (11 starts, 3 sub) for Manchester United. Not bad eh? :)

Ola was mediocre first half, much better second half if I have to believe some opinions on the internet. I have only watched 25 minutes of the second half.

    1. Here is the first half
    2. Here is the second half

Ola could become a very important player now Dutch football only produces one dimensional box strikers that depend on excellent service (Huntelaar, Dost, Wolf, Locadia, Luuk (though he actually has a poor overall game)). At younger Dutch NT ages we now have even more of these box wonders incoming. 3 high profile ones. God help us. They all have 1 thing in common. They can't play football. I really hope Lens somehow has made a click with the consistency gene in him and steps up to a new level as in that case he actually is quite an interesting bloke to have in the next years.

^The only solution to the current 'strikerless' problem is to move to a Barcelona style approach where you have a good footballer at that position. Clearly it won't be someone who has the skills of Messi as that type of player comes along only once in a generation. Maybe Lens is the player, I don't know as I rarely watch PSV unless they are playing Ajax. This is the reason I like Siem de Jong in that position at Ajax as he's just a little too slow to play as a traditional midfielder (I'm not saying he is NT material as I don't think he is; comment is only for Ajax).

Good goal. He needed it. The bad news is that he was put on the field as a right back in that game. This goal only solidifies the tendency of the manager to use him as a back and that is not the spot he can excel in, as we know from his Ajax time. This goal actually could be bad news long term.

    Don't disagree.

Aissadi at Liverpool is far, far worse. Played 13 minutes today and Liverpool lost. Chose a few thousands bucks more a week over Ajax. Oh well.

Assaidi at Liverpool is a weird one. He played an excellent 90 minutes in the last EL game an everyone was raving about him, and then he sits on the bench the next two EPL games
