how would this generation potentially winning the WC be a better accomplishment than that of the 2001-02 team. I don't know if you remember, but that team won the world cup. if anything that would be an equal accomplishment

I don't think that's possible given that the 2000-1 generation ended up winning that next world cup. How can you do "much better" than finishing #1?

Is easy by winning the 2013 confederation cup, follow that up with the 2014 world cup and 2015 copa america. That's exactly what neymar, lucas moura, oscar, damiao, casemiro, fernando, romulo, danilo, marcelo, alex sandro, dede, mario fernandez and company are going to do

It might not be the worst ever, but it sure is different from what we expect from the Brasilians. They have adopted much more european style of play, a more harder and disciplined football unlike their Samba Joga Bonito style. They are still torn between two styles and combined that with not that great generation and their dip in results was expected.

Part of dropping is obviously because we are not playing any competitive matches since all we are playing are friendlies. It was bound to happen even if we keep winning those games.

FIFA should probably freeze the ranking (or points) that an upcoming WC host country has at the moment WC qualifying starts. At least the rankings would continue to make some sense then.

The problem is nobody has been consistent lately apart from Spain, Germany, Italy and maybe Portugal. Uruguay is struggling in WC qualifying, Netherlands were a disaster in Euro 2012, Argentina & Brazil did poorly in Copa America, France can't get it together, etc.

Whoever you put #5 won't be that great or deserving.

That will probably make them more consistent. Though I don't know if it matters to Brasil (or any other host country) at all how they are ranked. The major only consequence to being incorrectly ranked that I see is that it affects the seeding order for the World Cup. But Brazil will be a high seed automatically anyway.

There is really not much point in trying to fix a system that is already inherently flawed. And I am not talking about the math and criteria it uses to achieve the ranking, I am talking about the concept itself.

At World Cup 2002 they didn't really had hard competition, in group stage they had China, Costa Rica and Turkey. After that Belgium, England didn't played well. We could notice that they have easier group stages on recent World Cup's: 1998 (Norway, Scotland, Morocco), 2002 (Turkey, China, Costa Rica), 2006 (beside Croatia :D they had Australia and Japan), 2010 (beside Portugal, they had Cote d'Ivoire and North Korea).

In South Africa they seemed weaker than before, because they had harder competitors (Portugal, Chile, Netherlands). In 2002 they had better football style, great defenders Lucio, Edmilson, talented Cafu and Roberto Carlos, confident last midfield players Kleberson and Gilberto Silva, with triple R in attack (Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo) with Dida. They seemed much more for watching than Felipe Melo, Kaka, Robinho. It's harder to remember the first squad in 2010 than in 2002. Some Brazilian goals in 2002 were really great: Edmilson against Costa Rica, Ronaldinho against England (free kick goal). But they had luck, agains Belgium there was one bad decision, referees didn't accept the goal of Wilmots I think, this match could end differently, maybe you remember this match.

They will create something around Neymar and Hulk, not so sure about creative midfield players like before, Luiz Gustavo shoots well. They had good defenders. Kaka doesn't play in his club. I don't predict good moments for Brazil on upcoming World Cup, they only play friendly matches, this could influence a lot.

how easy when it's sad and done ... or should I say naie and ignorant?

Now, Italy and SPain lost to S.Korea .. in same WC, and if they won youwouldhave said that they had "easy ride"? I guess ...

Now in Euro04, Francxe and Portugal lost to Greece, and if they won would you say they hd easy ride as well? may be not ...

how funny people can deviate the story in either way as it suites their (un)reaonable statement.
    - If big team won weaker = easy group/or tournament
    - If big team lost to weaker team = Ref fault ... LOL

BS. In 2010 that group was widely regarded along with group D as the groups of death.

Italy and Spain lost against South Korea because referees protected South Korea, they were hosts, goals weren't accepted, two red cards Portugal got in the group, South Korea had assistance in at least three matches, against Portugal, Italy and Spain. South Korea and North Korea are different teams, North Korea seems weaker than South Korea.

Italy, Spain and Portugal could win South Korea very easy, against Italian players there was so many fouls, Italians should got at least 2 penalties, Totti was on the ground mostly, those matches were something like Charlie Chaplin comedy.:D South Korea was good, but not for the 4th place, they should lose against Portugal, Italy or Spain.

It's strange that Brazil doesn't get some stronger European team.

Even in 1990, Brazil had Scotland and Costa Rica, Sweden seemed stronger.
1986 - Brazil had Northern Ireland and Algeria, Spain was strong, but enough for Brazil so that they can go further.

1982 - Brazil had New Zealand, Scotland, Soviet Union, again without possible triangle.

They had difficult group in 1974, with Netherlands, Argentina and here they have finished second. We can say that Brazil has easier groups since 1982. This seems strange, that they get very weak teams from Oceania, Central America and much weaker European teams, they don't have possible triangles. When I check some other informtions from this 20,30 year period, beside groups and other participants, everything is clear to me.:p

    Are you NUT?
So Greece won Euro because ref protected them as well?
Spain lost to US in confed 09 right after winning Euro08 because of ref protected the US?

STOP making excuses and get straigth facts: big teams DO NOT always win ok?

Brazil are always a power houses with those teams and POWER HOUSE teams DO NOT SHARE same group get it????

Brazil is stronger in International competition when they have at least 50% of their national team made up by players from their national league, or recent transfers to europe. And not when they field players which play at the european pitches.

European leagues are not, and should not, be considered a barometer for how to measure the strength of the Brazilian NT.

The last 2 WCs Brazil fielded players from Europe and shunned the ones playing in our league. We sucked and gave no continuity to our NT by not taking our young up and coming talent.

This year is the first time since 2002 where the Brazilian NT has a lot of national players. Most europeans don't follow our National League and have no idea of the quality of the players here. Until they trasnfer and become superstars there.

before 2002 most of the National Team was based on our National League, with players that had just transfered to Europe because of how well they were doing on our league, or with players that reached SUPERSTARDOM in Europe, because they went to europe and performed even better than they did at our National League.

Because of the way the world media works nowadays, even in Brazil there are a lot of people that shun our own league, saying that our teams wouldn't be able to beat European teams. Then they make Santos x Barca the example. without realizing that same Barca team embarrassed most of Europe on the way to that game.

So to answer the question, expect great things from this team. Because if history is an indication for things to come, this team is setting up to do great things, let's just hope our NT coach stops shunning Bra League players for European "tested" players.

Jefferson, Marcelo, Dede, Thiago Silva, Daniel Alves, Ralf, Paulinho, Oscar, Lucas, Neymar, Damiao

This team can win a world cup.

Turkey made the semifinals. Norway beat Brazil and is still unbeaten against Brazil. Norway is a hard game for Brazil. Besides Croatia in 2006? lol. Australia was better than Croatia in 2006. Brazil's group in 2010 was called the group of death.

Brazil only needed a draw against Portugal. Chile was an easy 3-0 for Brazil. Dida was not even a starter in 2002. Marcos was in goal.

I think the referee made the wrong decision in the Belgium match though.

Portugal deserved those two red cards and South Korea deserved to win that game. Italy didn't deserve two penalties. Totti shouldn't have been sent off though since he neither dived or was fouled. He tripped over. The only game that South Korea really got favourable decisions was the one against Spain. Two disallowed goals.

I always find it funny how Japan as hosts didn't get any good calls like South Korea. I also find it funny that most people overlook the favourable decisions Spain got in 6 out of 7 matches in the 2010 World Cup .

Scotland prevented France from qualifying. Sweden finished ahead of England in qualifying. You can bet that if France was in that group instead of Scotland and the same results happened you wouldn't say it was an easy group. Costa Rica was also better than both Scotland and Sweden.
