For those who follow the Superliga or the Icelandic NT? Is this totaly out of the blue. Is he like the biggest star in Denmark right now? Expected to sell for big money?

    Ha!

    Timmy Chandler says "heyyyyy....."

(And yes, I know I'm late with the Chandler references. I was busy yesterday!)

Well, the exceptionally big success has come as a surprise, not least to the AGF director of sport who openly admit that he had not seen this coming and suddenly were in a hurry to extend his contract, for obvious reasons... So it did come a bit out of the blue... or perhaps I should rather say, that Aron is still considered a possible diamond in the rough, who is still wasting huge opportunities and perhaps has also been helped along by some excellent assists from good team-mates... though he obviously has some good moves and the talent of being in the right place at the right time... but no, he is not regarded to be the biggest star in the Superliga right now, or even the most complete young striker... That would be Andreas Cornelius from FC København, who has already been capped for Denmark, at the age of 19.

As for the "big money" part of the question, then I expect that German and especially Dutch clubs are going to start bidding in the winter transfer window, since he will fit perfectly to the Dutch league, at this point in time... so Holland is where I think he is going, or perhaps Germany... while Cornelius seem to be a more talented version of Nicklas Bendtner, so he will probably be going to the English PL, when it is time for him to move abroad.

Except they both identify more with another nationality.

i am from Iceland and is well connected to the football here in Iceland and i must say its very unlikely that Aron will chose USA. I sense that he want to play for Iceland. I think there is no doubt in his mind.

Also it would be really though for us to lose a prospect like that to a nations like USA wich has so many footballplayers. There lives only 320 thousand people on this little Island and we can not afford to lose a player like that.

But on the otherhand he will not be starter when we field up our strongest team. Right now Sigthorsson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolbeinn_Sigþórsson at Ajax is number 1 and then Finnbogason(9 goals in 7 games) at Herenveen is his replacemen now when Kolbeinn is injured http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfreð_Finnbogason

Lars Lagerback has been playing 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 with Sighhorsson on top and Sigurdsson(tottenham) in free role behind him.

So as we can see it is a hard competition for Aron. Also Eidur Gudjohnsen finally started playing again so that adds even more strikers in the mix.

So right now there are about 5-7 strikers fighting for 2 spots.
I think Lagerback pecking order should be like this now

    1. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson(Ajax) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolbeinn_Sigþórsson

    2. Gylfi Sigurdsson(Tottenham) But he is more like a hole player http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gylfi_Sigurðsson
    3. Alfreð Finnbogason(Herenveen) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfreð_Finnbogason

    4. Aron Jóhannsson(AGF) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aron_Jóhannsson

    5. Björn Bergmann Sigurdarsson (Wolves) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Björn_Bergmann_Sigurðarson

    6. Gunnar Heiðar Þorvaldsson (Nörköpping) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunnar_Heiðar_Þorvaldsson

    7. Eidur Gudjohnsen (Cerle Brugge) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eiður_Guðjohnsen

    8. Heidar Helguson (Cardiff) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heiðar_Helguson

Heidar is now on a break from the NT team and will most likely not return and he is also getting old. Eidur who is also getting older but still if he gets fit and do well in Belgium we could see him help us in this group.

He has said that if the USA comes calling he will listen. So unless you know what is going in in Aron's head BETTER than he does, I will consider the question open. It is not a question off feeling sorry for Iceland-he is a USA citizen so he has this option.

Unless you can translate the latest news from Iceland for us all I suggest you be a bit more kind to a new poster from Iceland.

Welcome aboard maffi, I'm interested in reading your perspective and seeing how this all plays out. If he does end up playing for the US somehow at least its in the one position you can afford it :) the USA can desperately use some more strikers if you weren't aware already.

Quality strikers considering the nation's size. Eidur stil gets call ups? Does Iceland really need him?

I acknowledge all of that, but you've seen him play -- I don't think you could begrudge us for asking him :)

Yep. Like asking the prettiest girl to the prom... sometimes she says yes.

If nothing else, we helped him get an earlier call-up that he might have gotten otherwise and he may appreciate his US citizenship (and connection to the team) more than he might have in other circumstances. Perhaps we'll see him in the US down the road, playing or coaching or chasing our models like other Euro players like to do.

Or maybe he says yes and we introduce him to the real Kevin Bacon.

How long is the winter break supposed to last? I know it starts back in March but does it end in November or December?

The last round of games are the weekend of Dec. 8-10 and the league resumes March 1-3.

I imagine a call/no call to Camp Strudel will tell us everything we need to know,.....from a national team perspective.

I have only one thing to say... if Lagerback pick Torvaldsson one more time ahead of Jóhannsson, as he did the last time, Iceland can wave goodbye to Jóhannsson for good.

AGF Aarhus drew 1-1 with Randers FC this evening. Johannsson started and went 63 minutes.

Torvaldsson was that bad, when he played in the Superliga.... and I think this may be the reason why Aron is playing hard to get right now... Aron was too injured to play for Iceland, but no too injured to play for AGF today... in fact he didnt look like like a player who has just been had been injured.

I think he is weighing his international options. As he should. My take:
33% chance of making USA team in next 2 WC cycles, X 95% chance of USA making it=31%
70% chance of making Iceland team (guessing generously) X 5% chance of Iceland making the next 2 WCs (generous)=3% chance
3% vs. 33%. I was guessing but if he dreams of a WC there is one choice.

Really interesting idea, honestly, but aren't a lot of players more influenced by family/friends than WC draws? Or is that just a myth?

Thorvaldsson seems to be performing well now for his old coach. Planned to move back to Iceland after Esbjerg when his old coach from Halmstad, where he blossomed and got sold to Hannover, called. Joint second place in the goal rankings right now, when old top scorers Ranegie, Eriksson and Finnbogason got sold to Udinese, Gent and Heereveen in August. Clear top scorer Majeed is joining Spartak Moscow in January. Either way, they only seem to be fighting for the last Iceland bench spot right now. Who knows what the coach wants there. Young player for the future, an experienced player he can trust, or maybe the best team/morale player who can handle not getting playing time.

I think every player dreams of playing in the WC. If you are a pro player, you almost certainly have that dream.

Could just be using us for leverage. Which is fine.

The longer this drags on, the better the US looks.

Indeed, so long as we're being too pushy about it. We totally aren't at the moment, so we should come out of this looking pretty good one outcome or another.
