I have no trouble in clearing matters that some of you seem to be confused about.

LOL - Sure, there is no confusion among people that have a limited/liberal view of things. Poor college students are not allowed to vote at their favorite drinking establishments. Life is tough.

Okay. Leaving sside one article I linked to where some of your fellow Catholics were in danger of being disenfranchised, I'm curious as to how you' respond to the argument excerpted below.

Falc may have been responding to a specific question when he posted this. I'm taking it as a question about why so many of us in here get so wound up about this particular issue, which I think is a good question (my apologies if it wasn't intended to be taken that way).

Exercising our right to vote is as close to the heart of our democratic system as any of us will ever get. And there's something about efforts to play with that right for potential political gain that really, really pisses me off. I know, as a father, that if I ever witnessed someone threatening one of my kids, I'd likely not be able to respond in a manner that would be in any way proportionate. I'd ********ing snap. About the only other thing that comes even close to that category for me would be if I ever came up against a situation wherein my right to vote was being questioned.

You do not ******** with people's right to vote. Ideally, IMO, we should, as a nation and across political lines, commit real resources to encouraging voter participation. That's not what's happening, however.

I agree with you Minnman. Both sides are using efforts for political gain. For me, attempts to deny those who have the right to vote is just as bad as those trying to expand voting rights to those who do not. Resources should be committed to not only encouraging voter participation but also ensuring that the system is fair and thorough.

It is not about feeling good. And I don't think they are out to commit fraud or even know if they are doing so. Some of these voter drives collect numerous registrations with little or no screening. So if an individual receives a voter registration card, they think they are eligible to vote. It is pride that they are part of the American democracy. I don't fault them at all.

When you have a registration form that only asks you to check a box of whether you are a citizen or not, it is too easy for the paperwork to go through. I just filled out a government form this afternoon that asked for my city and state of birth. That should be on a registration form. If you list a place outside of the US, then the next question should be how did you attain citizenship. If there was a screening process that would then follow up on any individual that may be questionable, it gives the process greater integrity. We don't have that right now.

There have only been 10 cases of proven voter fraud since the year 2000. You are holding an empty sack.

Either way, I want to see the academic study that proves there is large scale voter fraud going on.

Not going to find anything with an academic study. The only way to do so is to check each and every voter as they go out the door. That won't happen. It is not realistic.

    Two things:

    1) Why is tom allowed to call you ********ing stupid but I'm not? Let's call a snap election for SuperMods :p

    2) There are two ways to attain U.S. citizenship. The first is to get born here. The second is to become naturalized. In either case, when registering you have to provide an ID# or a Social Security number. People who are not citizens who receive ID card numbers are flagged as not citizens, and noncitizens don't have SSNs. Any sort of screening process would be redundant; all that information is present at the Board of Elections. To answer your mind-bogglingly stupid post, we do have it now, it works fine, and noncitizens don't vote because they can't.

Let me correct you on something, it is possible to be born abroad and still be a US citizen. There was a certain Presidential candidate who met that criteria four years ago.

Not sure of the case in other states but in Maryland, if you do not have a DL or MD ID, then you enter the last four digits of your SSN. I am not sure if either is sufficient to screen for citizenship or whether that is done at all.

There was the father of a certain Presidential candidate who was a candidate himself in 1968 (and released lots of his tax returns) who also met that criteria.

Yes, and US citizens born abroad are given social security numbers. And yes, the last four of your social are sufficient to check your citizenship requirement.
