The 2001 team that went to the Copa America was pretty bad. They lost to Honduras and Mexico that tournament.
Well that is not the point. Losing to two CONCACAF teams was just plain awful and shameful for them. That team they brought to Colombia was horrendous.
It´s not just CONCACAF teams, Mexico had already been giving Brazil trouble and had results against them plus they had made their mark in CONMEBOL already so it´s not just any CONCACAF team. If there is anything shameful is losing to Honduras not Mexico. Mexico had already beaten Brazil in the Confederations cup final in 99, given Brazil hell in 97 and the year before they needed a wonder goal from Romario to tie Mexico in Guadalajara during the middle of the worst era of the Mexican NT. So it wasn´t that surprising for Mexico to win that game.
Mexico did give us close games. The Confed Cup final was not our main team at the time and it was in Mexico. Still it was 4 x 3. In 97 we beat Mexico in Miami 4 x 0 Romario hat trick and it could have been more .... I was there. You must be talking about some other game. Regardless, the quote was, Mexico beat Brazil regularly, and that's just not the case. Specially outside of Mexico which is where 2001 Copa America was.
I was talking about 97 Copa America. Mexico went 2-0 up against Brazil and Brazil had to make a comeback and Camilo Romero have a nightmare game that lived for him the rest of his life for them to get the 3-2 win. Also Mexico had given Brazil good games in the 99 Copa America besides the Confederations cup final. And Mexico had already established itself as a great team in CONMEBOL. And even if they didn´t regularly beat then, they did after it so it´s not a shock or an embarassment the way that losing to Honduras was. The guy is just trying to discredit Mexico like he always does.
Anyway, that's getting away from the point of the thread which I'm sure is asking, is today's Brazil "A" team the worst ever? It certainly seems that it is (or at least the worst since the 1950s). And worryingly for them, the 2014 World cup is approaching fast. But maybe home advantage will help mask how sub-par they are (kind of like Germany in 2006).
i think this team is the worst brazil of my memory. back then, even though they lost to honduras you could make a case for the fact that it wasn't their "A team". and the fact that they almost failed to qualify for the world cup is way over shadowed by the fact that the same team did win it. (2010 uruguay almost didn't qualify for the WC, but uruguay fans will say this 4th place WC team was one of their best ever). anyway the brazil 2001 team didn't perform to standards in qualifying but were still feared. they had some of the best players in the world and you knew all the had to do was click. on the other hand, this current team just sucks. they are going to need a miracle to do well in the WC an they don't have the world-class players of the past to get them over this terrible hump
Agree. Plus the whole "Brazil almost didn't qualify for WC 2002" is blown out of proportion. Please! They had a 4 point lead on Colombia with 3 matches left, and those 3 matches were against Chile, Bolivia and Venezuela (back when Chile and Venezuela sucked!). They pretty much would have had to lose all 3 of those easy matches to not qualify, 2 of which were at home.
i think this brazil team would have a hard time qualifying as well, but we'll never know considering they automatically qualify being the host nation. i also think the lack of meaningful games is gonna hurt them at the WC
This current team is the worst I have seen....by far. Back then we had some of the best players in the world....now we have one guy that MAYBE will become a top player.
Yes, T. Silva is good. But imo he would be on the bench if we try to put him in Brazil's previous squads. And I think the same would occur with Ramirez, Oscar, David Luiz, and the rest of them...
And obviously Dani Alves is too. The defense (and goaltending) is just as good as always. Just the forwards and attacking midfielders are way inferior.
i disagree. silva is awesome, but i might be a bit biased because he played at milan. but, i agree with the other players not being good enough. as far as full backs, yes marcelo and dani alves are good offensively but they are terrible defensively. back in the day cafu and roberto carlos were good going forward and defending. but thats just my opinion
It's strange when I saw Brazil against GB I thought they had an outstanding crop of young players who were destined to be big stars in the future (I really liked Oscar). But thinking about it do Brazil have a single offensive superstar in Europe currently? Maybe Hulk. They could be hosting the World Cup at exactly the wrong time.
maybe .. and hope not Note that 1- this Brazil NT was formed with many young starlets in Neymar, ganso, Lucas, Damao Oscar, Pato, Danilo, Marcello, Davis Luiz , Dede ... (all <25) with Thiago and Hulk are >26. and 2- Brazil league were in reform state with better funding so most of them have big salary even playing there. In a sense it made harder for Europe leagues to buy them (than before)
Reminds me a bit of Germany's situation in 2004. It also seemed like they were about to host a WC at the worst possible time. It worked-out for them as the home advantage helped a mediocre team get far. However I don't think Brazilians would celebrate (and brag) over a 3rd-place finish like the Germans have done recently. So there's a lot of pressure!
options are bad neither of these two are the worst brasil teams ever now if what you meant was to choose who is better between these two than the 2001-02 team was better but the 2011-12 generation will do a lot more and will win the world cup 2014 []__[]
So which particular year team was worse? How would they do more? (the team 01-02 + Ronaldo+ Scolari eventually won WC) This team already lost the olympic... (well more than half the team tehre) and look shaky now (vs big NT) Thanks 2 more years for chance of improvement
