Pardon my ignorance here but just how much of an upset is it going to be if Montpellier pull this off and win the title tonight? I'm not a Ligue 1 aficionado, so it seems like they've sort of come from out of nowhere - 14th last season the 7th smallest budget in the league.... were they expected to challenge this season? How in the world did they do it?
pretty big to be honest, their president himself said this team set their goal at 8th place! to put it simply on how they made it this far: lyon, OM, bordeaux, rennes etc. have all gone down due to varies reasons leaving the opportunity for m'pellier who have had a number of players in form I cant tell if it was suspended once or twice or whats really even going on since everyone is just standing around waiting
Montpellier score a 2nd 2-1 - barring anything Man Cityesque at the end of the game, this is in the bag for Montpellier... this is their first title, right?
the club in its present denomination and statutes has only existed since 1974, but even if you go back to all its other incarnations since 1919, yes, this is their first top-flight title.
Happy to see Montpellier winning it, especially after all the added drama due to the retards Auxerre "ultras", their title has to be, arguable the biggest upset in modern Ligue 1 history?
Uhh Im pretty sure they care more about the Champions League than L1 so Im guesssing they arent too upset over there. Their mission was accomplished. Their fans are probably more upset they didnt win the title IMO.
Hmmm I dont know. When Auxerre and Lens won it in the 90's I think that might have been a bigger upset since they are small towns where as Montpellier is a much larger city ? I dont know how much talent those teams had in comparision to this Montpellier team and where their budgets ranked in comparision to the other teams at that time.
Well, Auxerre had finished top 5 basically every year (and top 3 twice) before they won the title, they were a much more established top team when they won it despite their size. I guess Lens did came a bit more out of the blue but I regard but they were still a bigger and more established club than Montpellier was this year.
