    Hi Maniac,
Great posts and nice teams

I'm curious about Portuguesa line-ups. Reading your sources seems like they played 2-3-5 in those times (mid 50s)

    Thanks msioux! ;)

About Portuguesa's formation, you are right, it was a 2-3-5.

    Muca - GK (goleiro)
Nena - Noronha - CB (zagueiros)
Djalma Santos - Brandãozinho - Ceci - RH (lateral direito) CH (Volante) LH (lateral esquerdo) - famous "linha-média" (middle line)
Renato - Pïnga - IFs (meias direita e esquerda)
Julinho - Nininho - Simão - WGs and CF (pontas direita e esquerta and centro-avante)

Just to clarify, their classification as english standards and how is seen in Brazil.

Alfredo Di Stefano was asked recently in the Spanish media to name the five greatest forwards of all time. His reply.
    MUÑOZ,PEDERNERA,MORENO,LABRUNA AND LOUSTEAU
The forward line of La.Maquina.Di Stefano replaced Pedernera in 1946 and played with him in the Ballet Azul in the late forties. He has always maintained even in the Madrid press the greatest team he played in wasnt Madrids five European cups in a row team but La Maquina of River

That's a hard pill for some to swallow. This current era Barca team isn't even on the level of La Maquina.

It's hard to compare different eras but there's no doubt in my mind that La Maquina was a precursor of Guardiola's system, as was Hugary and later Ajax/Holland. What Pep did was return to the total football model that once was seen as the future of football but has proven so elusive in recent years.

By all accounts, La Maquina controlled the ball and the tempo of the game in a similar manner as Barcelona does today.

And I don't remember if I brought them up earlier in this long lasting thread, but speaking of Di Stefano, I have to mention another great team of the past, the Boca Juniors from the late 60's that he coached.

    Most common lineup:

    .......................Roma
    Suñé....Meléndez....Rogel....Marzolini
    .....Novello....Madurga....Medina
    ......Ponce...Angel Rojas...Peña

    The great Rojitas!!!

Since it was Portuguese immigrants that founded that team, were any of those players either Portuguese or 1st or 2nd generation luso-brasileiros? just curious

i think la maquina is well known by real football fans, but i agree with the barcelona of the late 50ies.
to bad real madrid had an even greater team but just look at the names in that barca squad. luis suarez, czibor, kubala (very underrated player) and koscis (one of the greatest strikers ever) normally such a team would win at least 1 or 2 european cups in a few years time

[It's odd that in the "officially stamped" UEFA sanctioned/passed-down version of the story that it always fails to get mentioned that Kocsis scored Honved's opening goal from a Puskas free-kick that was given after Ron Flowers had almost certainly been incorrectly called for handball...]

[I think that you mean "version" not "variant"; but I was actually there @ Molineux in '54. But, since you seem to want verification:

The film blurs a bit in that version but it looks almost certain that Flowers was incorrectly called for handball according to the rules of the day in the incident that lead to Kocsis scoring from Puskas' free-kick. The newsreel presenter even comments on the fact that it was a controversial call against Wolves. LMK if you need me to give you the location in the video and I'll try and find a tad clearer re-play of the specific incident.]
