Seems as if the last thread got killed or lost. So here's the new one for the upcoming campaign for 1997 born players.

Last year, we had five 1997 born players involved with the u16s. Which will move forward with the 96's and which will stay? It would seem Crowley is the one with the real chance.

Aaron Hayden - Chelsea - defender - January

Dan Crowley - Aston Villa - midfield - August
Seyi Ojo - Liverpool - winger - June
Lewis Cook - Leeds -midfield - February
Jordan Rossiter - Liverpool -midfield - March

It seems the 1997 born players have been informed if they are in the trial squad. Heard it was only 30 in the squad this time. Not sure if true.

    From a Nottingham Forest perspective,

Oliver Burke - right wing - April

has been called up to the trial squad.

Crowley (let's hope he has a good growth spurt) and Ojo as well will be in the u17s next season. Did Cook miss out after the first couple of games because of injury (not just the Scotland game) because he might be in with a chance depending on progress. Hayden looked the part in the first game of the VS and will I expect stay down in the u16s at least until the new year.

Cook had a pretty nasty injury and I think is still out.

I think there is definitely incentive to let Crowley play for the 17s to possibly help him choose us over Ireland. Not sure if Ojo will be involved though.

Bad news about Cook. Looked a good nippy player in the game I saw him.

Our u15 squad at beginning of season. (missing two players)

Oliver Burke is in the bottom row, 2nd from the right. From Melton Mowbray.

Don't think there is a trial squad this time because Oliver says he is in the England u16 squad. Thought it was trial squad but actually in the ENG squad as he cleared it up on Saturday when he went to play 16s.

I have to say Victory Shield time is one of the highlights of the season for me. Not just to see players for Arsenals future but for the future of our country. You would imagine this year's squad will be heavily influenced by Chelsea(again) due to their permormance in the Nike Cup where they were the best team by a distance from reports. Chelsea are starting to produce so many international players that even though no one has broken into the first team recently you would have to say they are, right now, the most productive academy in England.

What age group is the Nike Cup exactly? Would the the lads who played in the VS last time have been playing anyway? (as well as younger ones?) like Conor Hunte.

I agree they are producing talent but if the likes of McEachran do not get much of a sniff what chance do the likes of Swift and RLC have?, P.S if i was kid and i was wanted by the big clubs, Chelsea is the last place i would go because there record of giving kids a chance in the first team is shocking, and if i had a choice i would rather play for a club like Southampton at a young age because they give there kids a chance and there acadamy is great aswell

This year was 97s and younger. Hunte's a 96 (so's Aina), Hayden's a 97 but missed out injured. Chelsea only took three 97s and lost the Final on penalties, having not conceded in the entire competition.

What???? I thought you only had three Under 15's but I didn't know it was only three 97's. That is crazy.

Yeah, was confirmed by one of the lads on Twitter. The three 97s were the goalie, one centre back and Jeremie Boga (only just eligible as he's early Jan '97).

Only 3 '97 players at the club? Wow! Escpecially with it being such a young age still. Under 15s and u14s.

The same chance. Oviously to get in to a top side you have to be very good. That's the big problem. Scott Sinclair pops up now and again complaining he didn't get enough of a chance at Chelsea but they wouldn't even be interested in him now.

RLC's problem for now is staying fit. He finally came back last night and played in the 1-0 defeat (4-1) in the second game of the Youth Cup - for 35 minutes. He's the sort who wouldn't look out of place if he played next week.

We can add Foday Nobay to the list that we know of. Surprised Joe Gomez and Kasey Palmer haven't been told yet but maybe they could be told still.

Obviously Crowley or Ojo could go with 96's but would seem harsh on some of the 96's maybe missing out.

    Aaron Hayden - Chelsea
    Foday Nobay - Birmingham
    Dan Crowley - Aston Villa
    Sheyi Ojo - Liverpool
    Lewis Cook- Chelsea
    Jordan Rossiter - Liverpool
    Oliver Burke - Nottm Forest

I suppose some just need the opportunity to settle but that opportunity doesn't come. The need to win seems as high as ever for some reason. 20 years ago we weren't having that problem.

An example for Forest was all those years ago now...Our need to win was high like it should have been but Brian Clough still found the time to give young players an opportunity. He through a young Irish talent called Roy Keane (nobody had heard of much before) into a big game against Liverpool. The need to win was high then as well as it is now but I doubt we would ever see something like that again in the modern age for some reason. Is it money? Yes it damn well is and you can't fall behind the pack because money is the be all now.

Another issue is lack of stability, a club like Man Utd due to having the same manager for 25 years always seems to find place to give an academy graduate a chance even if with the need to win being as high as ever. Some can't be called world beaters but they do a job.

Suppose Chelsea will suffer on both accounts. Hopefully McEachran will get an opportunity soon because if given a prolonged opportunity, I'm sure he could do a role in the Chlsea squad next season. But will Chelsea fear their lack of success this season if they don't make the Champs League for next year?Or that Swansea never game him an opportunity? I hope not.

Top youngsters will still get a chance early on even these days - the Premiership has been going for 20 years - dig out a list of the youngest players making their debuts in that time. You'll see names like Lennon, Milner, Rooney, Vaughan - others too get a go early: Wilshere, Rodwell, Welbeck, Sterling, etc. It's easier at lower clubs of course, like Redmond and Powell. And there is always loans like Harry Kane. First you have to be good enough and when you get a go you have to take the chance pretty sharpish.

So, Lewis Cook has gone to Chelsea then. I hadn't seen that.

Nah we've got more 97s, but only took 3 to that tournament.

Lewis Cook is at Leeds, not Chelsea, know that's just a typo though.

There's a few other Chelsea 97s who might be in contention, perhaps most notably Muktar Ali, but I'm more inclined to wait and see rather than speculate atm.

Yeah, sorry that was a typo re: Lewis Cook.

    Guardian

I understand what you saying Guardian and thats fair enough but still frustrating that compared to 20 years ago there is still limited opportunity for players overall produced by academies in England. You would think with the more money going in to academies now we should see more of an end product. Far too easy to purchase from the outside. I look at Wigan for example...unbelievably only have Ben Watson and Callum McManaman who are English in their squad. Dave Jones is out of contract now.

    Juni

Not a good sign for the '97s who were left behind in favour for the '98s then. Hugely impressive Nike Cup from your lads considering the age. Thought Aaron Hayden was so good that first half I saw him. Can't wait to see him again.

I was actually slightly wrong in my original statement, apologies. Only three U15s, the rest U14s. There were more than three 97s involved, but it was still one of the youngest squads at the competition.

It's all the ********ing foreigners in the academies these days that is annoying. As Sir Trev has often said over the years: it wasn't meant to act as a finishing school for them

Interesting comment about Aaron Haydon. He did look the part in his one appearance in the VS. How tall does he look these days? Hard to tell will a lot of small players on the pitch of course.
